Kerala official suspended over offensive post on plane crash victim
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A government employee in Kerala has been suspended for making an offensive comment on Facebook about a Keralite nurse who died in the Ahmedabad plane crash.
A Pavithran, a junior superintendent at the Vellarikundu taluk office in Kasaragod district, was suspended on Friday after he mocked Ranjitha, a nurse from Pathanamthitta, who was among the victims of the crash.
In a Facebook post, State Revenue Minister K Rajan described Pavithran's remarks as "disgraceful", and said the suspension order was issued immediately after the post came to his attention.
Ranjitha, a mother of two, was working as a nurse in the UK.
She had travelled to Kerala for a four-day visit to complete formalities related to her government job, with plans to rejoin the service after a stint abroad.
She died when she boarded the ill-fated flight on her return.
Meanwhile, State Health Minister Veena George visited Ranjitha's residence in Pullad in Pathanamthitta district and consoled her two sobbing children and grief-stricken family members.
The crash occurred on Thursday afternoon when a Boeing 787 Dreamliner (AI 171), carrying 242 people-- including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani-- crashed into a medical college complex in Ahmedabad shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
Only one person survived the crash.
A total of 241 people, including 168 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese and one Canadian, lost their lives.

Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ahmedabad on Friday and visited the site of the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash that killed 241 people a day earlier, one of the worst air disasters in recent times. The Prime Minister arrived at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport and drove straight to the crash site in the Meghaninagar area, officials said. He was accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Modi visited the C7 ward of the hospital, where 25 injured people are undergoing treatment. He also met the lone survivor of the crash - Indian-origin British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. Modi, who served as Gujarat Chief Minister for 12 years, earlier said he was "stunned" by the tragedy. "It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected," he said on X on Thursday. The crash took place seconds after AI 171 took off for London Gatwick airport from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Officials said the flight lost altitude soon after taking off at around 1.30pm, before crashing into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College doctors in Meghaninagar area and going up in flames, sending plumes of thick black smoke spiralling up in the air.

Like several other countries, India relies heavily on imports from China to meet its need for rare earth elements. Since rare earth magnets are crucial for the production of automobiles, the segment is particularly hit. Robust activity 122.7 million: That's the number of e-way bills raised by businesses and traders for shipping goods within and across states in May. This was up 19% year-on-year, suggesting brisk economic activity in the country. However, a likely driver of robust e-way bill generation could also be advance dispatches in anticipation of the Goods and Services (GST) Council meeting, Mint reported, quoting experts. The GST collections data released earlier also pointed to robust activity in the country, with the May collections rising 16.4% year-on-year to ₹2 trillion. Easing inflation India's retail inflation eased further to 2.8% in May from 3.2% the previous month due to the statistical effect of a favourable base as well as continued easing in food inflation. This is the lowest inflation print in over six years, supporting the sharper-than-expected cut of 50 basis points by the Reserve Bank of India last week. While the headline inflation has now been below the medium-term aim of 4% for the fourth consecutive month, core inflation, which excludes food and fuel, remains above 4%. Migrant mayhem Under US President Donald Trump, crackdowns on migrants, including those who have legal rights to stay, have increased dramatically. The Adani Group plans to invest ₹1.3–1.7 trillion annually over the next five years and has about ₹1.6 trillion in debt maturities between 2025-26 and 2029-30. While a majority of these will be met through cash the group generates, some additional fund infusion will be needed to meet the capex goals, as well as servicing of its debt. Tech's future A recent artificial intelligence (AI) report by veteran tech analyst Mary Meeker has shed light on the future of the tech industry. India, while not covered extensively in the report, will be impacted by these shifts. OpenAI's ChatGPT, which kick-started the current interest in AI, saw an unprecedented level of growth, reaching 100 million users in just two months. India played a key role in it and currently accounts for 13.5% of global ChatGPT mobile app users, compared to the US' 8.9%. Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], June 14 (ANI): Gujarat's former Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel on Friday expressed deep anguish over the loss of life of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Speaking to the mediapersons, Patel said, 'Hearing the news and watching it on TV has pained lakhs and crores of Gujaratis and crores of BJP workers. Vijay Rupani was a CM with whom I received the opportunity to work as a Deputy CM. We worked for the state like brothers. On behalf of all of us, I pay humble tributes to him.' Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was among the 242 passengers on the Air India flight bound for London that crashed soon after taking off from Ahmedabad, killing 241 people on board. One passenger survived the crash. Earlier in the day, Adani Group Chairperson Gautam Adani visited Vijay Rupani's residence. Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party President JP Nadda also expressed sorrow and grief over the tragic demise of Vijay Rupani. On Thursday, the Al-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aeroplane bound for London's Gatwick had crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport. The airlines said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash. The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a Line Training Captain with 8,200 hours of flying experience, assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 flying hours. According to Air Traffic Control (ATC), the aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It made a Mayday call to ATC, but thereafter, the aircraft did not respond to the calls. Immediately after departing from Runway 23, the aircraft crashed outside the airport perimeter, and heavy black smoke began emanating from the accident site. Vishwashkumar Ramesh miraculously survived the Air India plane crash a day ago, in which 241 other passengers died. Kumar, a British national of Indian origin, was seated in row 11, at the left window seat in the flight's economy class section, right behind an emergency exit. There were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national on board the crashed plane, airline authorities said. (ANI)
