"I pay humble tributes to him": Nitin Patel expresses grief over Vijay Rupani's demise in Air India plane crash
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], June 14 (ANI): Gujarat's former Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel on Friday expressed deep anguish over the loss of life of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Speaking to the mediapersons, Patel said, 'Hearing the news and watching it on TV has pained lakhs and crores of Gujaratis and crores of BJP workers. Vijay Rupani was a CM with whom I received the opportunity to work as a Deputy CM. We worked for the state like brothers. On behalf of all of us, I pay humble tributes to him.'
Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was among the 242 passengers on the Air India flight bound for London that crashed soon after taking off from Ahmedabad, killing 241 people on board. One passenger survived the crash.
Earlier in the day, Adani Group Chairperson Gautam Adani visited Vijay Rupani's residence.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party President JP Nadda also expressed sorrow and grief over the tragic demise of Vijay Rupani.
On Thursday, the Al-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aeroplane bound for London's Gatwick had crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport. The airlines said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash.
The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a Line Training Captain with 8,200 hours of flying experience, assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 flying hours.
According to Air Traffic Control (ATC), the aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It made a Mayday call to ATC, but thereafter, the aircraft did not respond to the calls.
Immediately after departing from Runway 23, the aircraft crashed outside the airport perimeter, and heavy black smoke began emanating from the accident site.
Vishwashkumar Ramesh miraculously survived the Air India plane crash a day ago, in which 241 other passengers died. Kumar, a British national of Indian origin, was seated in row 11, at the left window seat in the flight's economy class section, right behind an emergency exit.
There were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national on board the crashed plane, airline authorities said. (ANI)

'Tragedy calls for introspection': Naidu vows reforms after Air India crash
Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on Saturday (June 14) expressed deep sorrow over the crash of Air India Flight AI171 and assured the nation that the government "would leave no stone unturned in uncovering the causes and ensuring long-term aviation safety reforms". Addressing a press conference at Udaan Bhawan, New Delhi, alongside Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol, Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha and senior officials, Naidu said the incident had 'shaken the entire nation,' and stressed that the loss of young lives — many of them students — was 'heartbreaking beyond words'. 'I myself lost my father in an accident. I understand what these families are going through,' said the Minister. 'This is not just a technical event. It's a humanitarian tragedy. The government's priority is to provide every form of assistance possible.' "India's aviation safety systems are among the world's best, as recognised by the ICAO,' Naidu reiterated. 'But this tragedy calls for honest introspection. We will ensure meaningful reform, not just reassurances.' Ahmedabad plane crash: Support to affected families The minister announced a series of directives issued to Air India to support families of victims and the injured. These include: Immediate disbursement of ex gratia compensation Logistical and emotional support to next of kin Deployment of senior Air India personnel for family assistance A dedicated support cell at Gatwick Airport for British nationals and their families Help with travel arrangements, medical documentation, and hospital coordination Naidu stressed that the government's approach would prioritise 'compassion, dignity and respect' for the deceased and their families. Ahmedabad plane crash: Emergency measures and coordination Soon after the crash on June 12, a 24X7 control room was activated at the Ministry's headquarters, staffed by officials from DGCA, BCAS, CISF and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). A parallel media control room was also set up at the National Media Centre to ensure streamlined information dissemination. Helplines were activated to support victims' families, including: Ahmedabad Airport Emergency Helpline: 9974111327 MoCA Control Room: 011-24610843 / 9650391859 Air India Passenger Helpline: 1800-5691-444 Senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), DGCA, Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), AAI and BCAS reached the crash site within hours to coordinate rescue and relief operations. Ahmedabad plane crash: Investigations and black box recovery The AAIB launched a formal investigation the same day, dispatching a five-member GO Team led by the Director General. The team has since been reinforced with forensic and medical experts. In a significant development, the aircraft's black box was recovered on June 13 around 5 pm. 'This will provide critical insight into what happened during the flight's final moments,' said the minister. To conduct a broader inquiry, the government has constituted a high-level committee under the Union Home Secretary. This independent panel will include representatives from: Ministry of Civil Aviation Ministry of Home Affairs Government of Gujarat DGCA, BCAS, Indian Air Force, Intelligence Bureau State Disaster Response Authority National and state-level forensic experts Key objectives of the committee include: Examining the crash from technical, operational and regulatory perspectives Identifying systemic and institutional gaps Recommending long-term reforms to aviation safety systems, emergency protocols, crew training and air traffic management The committee will submit its report within three months. Deliberations are scheduled to begin on Monday (June 16). Ahmedabad plane crash: Technical inspections and oversight The DGCA has directed Air India to conduct immediate inspections of all Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft fitted with Genx engines. Of the 33 Dreamliners in service with Indian carriers, eight have already been checked. The rest are being inspected on a priority basis. Meanwhile, DGCA has intensified surveillance of maintenance and airworthiness protocols for all wide-body aircraft in the country. Besides, the Ministry has also urged the public and media to avoid speculation and rely only on verified information. 'We will ensure transparency. The focus is to get to the truth and deliver justice,' the Minister said.

FTA with India brings ‘genuine' competitive advantage, UK Parliament told
London, Jun 14 (PTI) The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations concluded with India places the UK at a 'genuine" competitive advantage in the manufacturing sector, the House of Commons was told this week. During a debate on the bilateral FTA agreed last month, UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds fielded a series of questions on the advantages of the deal which has been pegged to increase bilateral trade by GBP 25.5 billion annually in the long term. Reynolds reiterated that the pact marked a huge economic win for the UK as the 'best deal that India has ever offered". 'On advanced manufacturing… a set of advantageous positions has been agreed, putting this country at a genuine competitive advantage, particularly in relation to sectors such as automotive and machinery," said Reynolds, in response to a question by British Sikh Labour MP for Smethwick, West Midlands, Gurinder Singh Josan. 'India is traditionally a very protectionist economy, and it is the world's fastest growing big economy. Whether it is for goods or services… or the West Midlands as a whole, there is so much good stuff here to celebrate," added the minister. The debate this week comes ahead of UK-India Week, which begins next week as part of the annual India Global Forum (IGF) summit in London. The India-UK FTA is set to dominate the agenda, with Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal among the speakers expected to address the forum. It will also mark the launch of the 2025 edition of the 'India Meets Britain Tracker', which analyses the investment flows by Indian companies into the UK. Expedite construction work on Zero Mile-Masaurhi Road: CM
Patna: Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday expressed displeasure over the slow progress of work on the SH-1 Zero Mile-Masaurhi road and directed the officials concerned to speed up the construction. The state cabinet had approved the proposal in Oct 2018 to convert the two-lane road into 4-lane to ensure traffic ease on the route connecting the new Patliputra Bus Terminal. The CM asked the officials to ensure the speedy construction work so that people get its benefit. Earlier, Nitish inspected the construction work of the Mithapur-Mahuli four-lane elevated road site at the Mithapur flyover roundabout and Parsa Bazar. He said the elevated road will be above the Sipara bridge with service roads on both sides near the Mithapur railway crossing. The CM asked the officials concerned to complete the remaining work of the elevated road speedily as people will also get relief from the traffic jams on the bypass. After inspecting the sites, the CM took stock of the construction work of Punpun suspension bridge and went to Punpun Ghat to inspect the beautification work done there. Nitish said people will be able to reach Punpun Ghat easily, especially to offer Pindadaan. "All the facilities required have been taken care of," he said, adding: "We have an old attachment with this area. We keep coming here."
