Xfinity Mobile users are about to get a big upgrade, but not everyone knows why it matters

Phone Arena10 hours ago

Comcast is rolling out an upgrade to many of its mobile customers that could improve the way they use their phones. The company has announced that it is moving a large group of users on Xfinity Mobile, Comcast Business Mobile, and NOW Mobile to premium data plans that include QCI 8. This change is expected to give those users better performance when using the cellular network.
QCI, or Quality of Service Class Identifier, is a system carriers use to manage how traffic flows across a network. QCI 8 is considered a higher-priority level for data. It helps ensure that users get faster speeds and lower latency during times when the network is busy. That means streaming videos, playing online games, and even using apps in crowded areas should feel more responsive.
Comcast says affected users will get an email about the change by July 1. The upgrade will happen automatically and users don't need to take any action.

This new move follows the launch of Xfinity Mobile's Premium Unlimited plan, which came with more perks like twice-a-year phone upgrades, full 4K video streaming, more hotspot data, and better spam call blocking. While the QCI 8 change is separate from that plan, it shows Comcast is continuing to make updates that affect a broad number of users.
It's not yet clear which specific plans will get QCI 8 or whether this change will lead to any price changes. But since Comcast is making the switch quietly and across multiple brands, it looks like the upgrade could reach many users.
For most people, the benefits may be hard to notice at first. But QCI 8 could make a real difference in places where the network is usually crowded, like concerts, sporting events, or busy city areas. Prioritized data helps users stay connected even when the signal slows down for others on the same network.
Comcast has been working to grow its mobile business, and changes like this help bring its network closer in line with what larger carriers offer. That said, the actual improvement will still depend on local coverage and how well the network is performing in each area.
Still, this is a step in the right direction for users who expect more from their mobile service, especially in situations where performance matters most. Secure your connection now at a bargain price!

Apple is trying to undo this court decision — and wants a new judge too

Apple has filed a new appeal in the Epic Games case, asking the Ninth Circuit Court to toss out a recent order that blocks it from charging commissions on in-app purchases made outside its App Store system. The company argues that the ruling goes too far and punishes behavior that isn't illegal. This legal move comes after a ruling in April, when U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers found Apple in civil contempt. That decision claimed Apple was not following a 2021 injunction that originally forced it to allow developers to steer users to third-party payment options. In response, the judge issued a stronger order. Among other things, it banned Apple from taking any cut of purchases made through external links and added new rules on how developers can direct users to outside platforms. Apple says this updated order crosses a legal line. In its latest filing, the company claims that the court is using contempt powers to impose new restrictions that go beyond what was in the original decision. Apple also defended its 27% commission on purchases made through external links. It argued that while a court might find that rate too high, it doesn't justify removing commissions entirely. Apple said in the brief: — Apple In total, Apple is asking the appeals court to cancel the new injunction, reverse the contempt finding, and strike down five extra rules related to how developers can guide users to third-party payment systems. These include limits on button styles, template disclosures, and link placement. Apple is also requesting that if the case returns to district court, it be assigned to a new judge. The company says this would help preserve the appearance of fairness, since the current judge may have difficulty setting aside past opinions. In a statement to Law360, Apple said: — Apple Epic declined to comment on the matter at this time. Whether Apple can persuade the courts to side with them remains to be seen, but it looks like we have yet to see the conclusion of this ongoing battle. One thing is for sure, Apple is not letting up on this fight or the extra revenue it gets from in-app payments. Secure your connection now at a bargain price! The iOS 26 update gives iPhone users a chance to disable a feature they really don't want to see

Apple iPhone users aren't happy about the tech giant's placement of a promotion for the original Apple film "F1 the Movie" in the iPhone's Wallet app. On social media sites, iPhone users are complaining that the app is disseminating a push notification giving them $10 off the purchase of two or more tickets to see "F1 the Movie" via movie ticketing app Fandango. The film takes a look at the world of Formula 1 racing and was filmed during real Grand Prix events. It stars Brad Pitt and shows how Apple technology is used on the circuit. For example, we are shown custom-made cameras placed inside the cars that are made from iPhones. Then there are the AirPods Max over-ear headphones that Pitt's character, F1 driver Sonny Hayes, sleeps with. The movie might end up being a big hit but iPhone users aren't happy about being forced to view Apple promoting the film on their expensive handset. As one Reddit user wrote, "I did not pay over $1000 for an iPhone to get advertised at." Apple offers a promotion in the iPhone Wallet app for movie tickets to see F1 the Movie. | Image credit-X Ironically, in the iOS 26 Developer Beta, Apple has added a way to disable Offers & Promotions from Apple Wallet. Open the Wallet app, tap the three-dot icon in the upper right, press on Notifications, and toggle off Offers and Promotions. This will stop those iPhone users who received the notification about the movie ticket deal from seeing any more promotions in the Wallet app. Under the Offers & Promotions setting under Notifications in the Wallet app, Apple wrote, "Wallet will show special offers and discounts available from Apple or its partners." Keep in mind that you have to be running the iOS 26 Developer Beta in order to toggle off the notifications. Those who don't will have to wait for the stable version of iOS 26 to be released in September to be able to opt out of special offer notifications in the Wallet app. With iOS 26, iPhone users will be able to disable receiving promotions in the Wallet app. | Image credit-PhoneArena Adding the toggle controls is actually a brilliant strategy by Apple allowing those not interested in taking advantage of these deals from having to view them. Speaking of "F1 the Movie," Apple has been heavily promoting the film and even opened the WWDC Developer Conference earlier this month with a preview of the film adding made up parts for Apple executives Tim Cook and Craig Federighi. Nvidia announces GeForce RTX 5050 for $249

Nvidia today announced the smallest member of the RTX 50-series, the GeForce RTX 5050. It will start at $249 and will be available in the second half of July. The RTX 5050 features a new GB207 die based on the Blackwell architecture with 2560 CUDA cores, two thirds of the RTX 5060 that launched in April. It also features 5th generation Tensor cores and 4th generation RT cores like other 50-series cards. This enables it to support features like DLSS4 with multi-frame generation and the upcoming Reflex 2. The RTX 5050 GPU is clocked at 2.31GHz base and boosts up to 2.57GHz. You get 128-bit 8GB GDDR6 memory, making it the only 50-series card so far without GDDR7. Other features include 3x DisplayPort 2.1b and 1x HDMI 2.1b connectivity, 1x 9th generation NVENC encoder and 6th generation NVDEC decoder. The card runs on 130W of power and can take either a single 8-pin connector or 300W or greater PCIe Gen 5 cable. Nvidia has a couple of mostly pointless graphs showing the relative performance of the RTX 5050 compared to older Nvidia cards that make it hard to make anything out but the company claims the new card is 60% faster on average in raster than the RTX 3050 that came out over three years ago. The card also seems on average in the ballpark of RTX 4060 performance from two years ago. The RTX 5050 should be on shelves this time next month. There is no Founders Edition model from Nvidia but the card will be available from all major board partners, including ASUS, Colorful, Gainward, Galaxy, GIGABYTE, INNO3D, MSI, Palit, PNY, and ZOTAC. There is also going to be a mobile version of the RTX 5050, which is shipping today in laptops starting at $999. Source
