PETALING JAYA – Social media platforms must do more to tackle online harms and be held accountable, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
Speaking at the launch of the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia's (CMCF) guidelines on reporting and sharing suicide-related content, Fahmi called on digital platforms to join the CMCF to support ethical content practices and help curb the rising tide of online toxicity. He pointed out that companies earning billions in advertising revenue must take responsibility for the content published and shared on their platforms.
'TikTok has joined the Content Forum and we are grateful for that. But many other platforms are still not on board — especially X,' he said, referring to the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Fahmi said while Malaysia has the legal framework in place, enforcement and platform cooperation remain lacking.
'The laws are mostly there. We also have the Online Safety Act coming into effect soon. But are platforms doing enough? I don't think so,' he said.
He described X as one of the worst offenders.
'X really puts the 'X' in toxic. It's an extremely toxic environment,' he added.
He also criticised Facebook for failing to control scam ads and deepfake content, noting that the platform has become a hotbed for fraudulent schemes that often go unchecked and prey on unsuspecting users.
'For a long time, we didn't look at scams as a form of cyberbullying. But scams, whether AI-generated deepfakes or identity theft used to promote fake products have a serious impact on mental health,' he said.

He said that resistance from tech platforms to cooperate with regulators is not just a Malaysian issue but one that affects the entire Asia-Pacific and Asean regions.
'Many of these platforms act as if they're above national laws. This isn't just about regulation. It's about their mindset.
'When it comes to profit, they move quickly. But when it's about following the law, they drag their feet,' he said.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Supreme Commander General Songwit Noonpakdee, National Security Council Chief Chatchai Bangchuad, and the military's commanders-in-chief. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops engaged in a brief gunfight in Thailand's north-eastern Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's northern Preah Vihear province, where one Cambodian soldier was reportedly killed. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). MCMC Clarifies Mobile Phone Data Collection Amid Media Reports, Ensures Privacy
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has clarified its collection of mobile phone data (MPD) from Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), assuring that no Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is accessed, processed, or disclosed. The clarification comes amid recent media reports regarding the matter. In a statement today, MCMC said MPD was used strictly for the generation of official statistics to support evidence-based policymaking in two key domains, namely the ICT Sector and the Tourism Sector. For the ICT Sector, MPD helps produce granular statistics, such as the number of active mobile broadband subscriptions and penetration rates at the state, district, mukim, parliamentary constituency, state legislative assembly (DUN), and local authority levels. For the Tourism Sector, it generates indicators such as the number of visitors and domestic tourism trips. 'The MPD data requested from MNOs is anonymised and contains no PII. 'In addition, MNOs are given the option to either process the MPD data within their own secure environment and submit the required anonymised and aggregated output to MCMC, or, for MNOs without in-house processing capabilities, to submit the anonymised data to MCMC for processing. 'In both cases, no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected,' it said. MCMC further clarified that the use of MPD as a new source of national statistics was a strategic direction set by the government to strengthen the quality and timeliness of statistical outputs for policy and planning purposes. Implementation of MPD is through collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science, it added. Over the past two years, MCMC said extensive engagement with all MNOs had been carried out to ensure mutual understanding of the data requirements, processes, and privacy safeguards.

Yinson surges 14% on RM9bil buyout news

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Yinson Holdings Bhd shares surged today on news a US investment fund is in talks for a buyout of the oil and gas services provider, potentially valuing it as much as RM9 billion. Its shares jumped as much as 29 sen or almost 14% to RM2.39 this morning, its highest level in five months. At the midday break, a total of 9.5 million shares changed hands. The counter pared its gains in the afternoon session and was trading at RM2.29 at 3.40pm, valuing the group at RM7.05 billion. Before today's run-up, Yinson shares have fallen about 17% year to date. Investors snapped up the stock after Bloomberg reported today that US-based Stonepeak Partners is holding 'exclusive talks' with the Lim family, which holds a 26.6% stake in Yinson, to take the company private. The Bloomberg report quoted sources with knowledge of the matter. Yinson has yet to comment on the purported deal. The RM9 billion proposal translates to about RM3.23 per share, a premium of about 37.5% over today's midday price of RM2.35, and 54% over yesterday's RM2.10 closing price. Of the 10 research houses covering Yinson, all have 'buy' calls with an average 12-month target price of RM3.54. From lorry company to global player Yinson was founded by its executive chairman, Lim Han Weng, 72, and his wife, Bah Kim Lian, in 1984, as a lorry transport company before diversifying into the oil and gas sector. In 1996, Yinson went public and continued to expand its global presence. It is now one of the world's biggest providers of floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessels, which are used to extract and store crude oil. Forbes lists Han Weng and his family's net worth at US$480 million (RM2.03 billion) as of April 16. His son, Chern Yuan, is the group's CEO while another son, Chern Wooi, is executive chairman of listed Lianson Fleet Group Bhd (formerly Icon Offshore Bhd), which was acquired in 2024. The company has US$21 billion (RM88 billion) worth of leasing contracts extending till 2048, according to Forbes. Yinson is also in the business of producing renewable energy and building electric vehicle charging networks. For the financial year ended Jan 31, 2025, the group posted a net profit of RM752 million, down 22% year-on-year, while revenue fell 38% to RM7.6 billion from RM11.65 billion a year earlier.
