Hoax calls putting lives at risk, says Fire Dept

KOTA BARU: The fire station bell rings loudly, piercing the silence of the night.
With sirens wailing and lights flashing, the red fire engine speeds out of the station. But upon arrival at the given address, everything is silent. No flames, no smoke.
It is a hoax call.
To the caller, it may be just a prank, but to firemen, every false alarm is a gamble with someone else's life as response teams may not be available should a real crisis arise.
Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department director Farhan Sufyan Borhan said they received 2,053 emergency calls as of July 7 this year, out of which eight were hoax calls.
In 2024, it recorded 6,099 calls including seven false alarms; in 2023, there were 4,480 calls with seven false alarms; and in 2022, there were 4,213 calls with two false alarms.
At a glance, the number of false alarms may seem small, but even a single hoax can drain the firemen's time and energy and disrupt their focus, potentially putting real emergencies at greater risk.
Farhan Sufyan said there were also heartbroken or plain lonely callers, who abused the emergency hotline to pour out their feelings.
'To them, it might not be wrong to call the emergency number but to us, it's still a false call because the station has to prepare regardless, and the fire engine remains on standby for dispatch,' he told Bernama.
He warned that those who make false emergency calls can be charged under Section 233 (2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Upon conviction, offenders face a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment of not more than one year, or both.
Farhan Sufyan also reminded the public that accurate and precise information is crucial in an emergency.
Recalling an incident that still haunts him today, he said it happened when he was serving in Sabah.
He said someone called to report a fire, but the address given was incomplete, so the operations commander tried to ask more questions, such as nearby landmarks or street names.
In those crucial moments, the fire grew larger.
'Tragically, three people perished in that fire, not because the windows of the building they were trapped in were barred, but because it took too long for the firefighters to get to the correct location,' he added.

Form two student who punched, threatened teacher to be charged today

KUALA LUMPUR: A form two student will be charged today for punching and threatening a teacher at a secondary school in Kajang on Monday. The 14-year old is expected to be hauled to the magistrate's court to face charges of voluntarily causing hurt. The offence, under Section 323 of the Penal Code, carries a one-year jail term and a fine not exceeding RM2,000 or both upon. The student will be escorted to the courtroom by police from the Kajang district police headquarters after a two-day remand following his arrest. The teacher, in his police report, claimed he was punched and threatened by the student within the school grounds. Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abd Yusof was reported to have said that preliminary investigations showed the incident stemmed from the student skipping physical education class, during which he was supposed to be on the field. Naazron had said after being reprimanded, the student became dissatisfied and engaged in a fight with the teacher. He said the student punched the teacher in the face and issued threats in the presence of several other teachers and students.

Ex-university admission manager fined RM35,000 for forging recruitment documents

IPOH: A former private university admission manager was fined RM35,000, in default of four months' imprisonment, by the Sessions Court here today for forging student recruitment documents six years ago. Mohd Khalid Ka'ab, 42, pleaded guilty before Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi. According to the charge sheet, the accused had dishonestly used a document as genuine, namely, a Student Recruitment Agreement between Institut Teknologi Petronas Sdn Bhd (ITPSB) and Profedge Sdn Bhd, dated August 1, 2019. As an agency company appointed to provide promotional services for Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) programmes and to recruit students from the Federal Territory, Selangor, and other locations for admission into the university, the accused had reason to believe that the document was false. The offence was allegedly committed at the UTP Registrar's Office in Seri Iskandar in June 2019. The charge was framed under Section 471 of the Penal Code, punishable under Section 465, which provides for a maximum of two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction. Prosecuting officer Shahrul Azuan Ghazali from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) handled the case, while Mohamad Izwan Abd Rahman appeared for the accused. In pleading for leniency, Izwan told the court that his client had admitted guilt at the earliest opportunity, which saved valuable court time. However, Shahrul Azuan urged the court to impose a commensurate sentence as a deterrent to prevent similar offences in the future. According to the facts of the case, the accused used a document titled Student Recruitment Agreement between ITPSB and Profedge Sdn Bhd to support an official payment made in the name of Profedge Sdn Bhd. The company was claimed to be an appointed agency tasked with providing promotional services for UTP programmes and recruiting students from other locations for admission into UTP. However, the services were never actually carried out, and the payment amounted to RM323,650. During an Executive Management Committee meeting held on July 15, 2020, by the university, it was confirmed that the agreement under the name of Profedge Sdn Bhd had never been reviewed. On Sept 15, 2021, a report was filed with the MACC and investigations revealed that the accused had forged the agreement between ITPSB and Profedge Sdn Bhd. The forged document was used to facilitate payments by UTP through six invoices issued to Profedge Sdn Bhd, despite the fact that the students listed in the invoices had not been recruited through the agency.
