QuickCheck: Did Gordon Ramsay almost become a pro-footballer?
However, Ramsay's gastronomic empire would not have existed as it wasn't his first career choice.
Did the world-famous celebrity chef almost become a world-famous football player?
Verdict:
TRUE
Life would be a very different kind of sandwich for him if it weren't for unfortunate football injuries.
They say that every cloud has a silver lining, for Ramsay, it must have been a very thick lining.
At 15, a young Gordon Ramsay started his football journey at Oxford United before being spotted by a scout employed by Scotland's most titled club – the Rangers.
A few years later, the aspiring footballer received an offer from the Glasgow-based club.
For the uninitiated, this wasn't a small feat as the Rangers Football Club is one of the most successful and storied football teams in the world.
Ramsay's path to football stardom was clear as day, but fate had other plans.
In 1985, after being marked with injuries including damaged knee cartilage and torn cruciate ligament, the promising player had to end his pursuit in football.
Ramsay was forced to re-think his future and went back to school, earning a degree in hotel management in 1987. And the rest was history.
"I was a naturally aggressive left-back, a cut-throat tackler... You may have got past once but there was never, ever, ever a second occasion," Ramsay once told the Observer Sport Monthly.
"And I was fast, I was a great 100m sprinter. If you were to compare me to anyone, I guess it could be Stuart Pearce," he said.
Despite him giving up on his pursuit to play professional football, Ramsay still plays the beautiful game now and then, such as becoming a regular participant in Soccer Aid and other charity events.
His cooking career has gone on to achieve tremendous success, earning him US$62mil in 2018 according to Forbes.
That's behind only Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. Not bad for a second-choice career!

Fred LeBlanc of legendary New Orleans band, Cowboy Mouth first guest NASHVILLE, Tenn., July 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — On Wednesday, July 23rd, singer, songwriter, and radio personality Lindsay Lawler debuted her new radio show 'We Should Write.' With an understanding of vulnerability and absurdity necessary for creativity, Lawler says she's creating a space for her guests to dive into how writing has served as a tool for healing, growth, and self-discovery. 'The goal is to remind people that writing—whether in a journal, a song, or the notes app on your phone—can change your life.' Lawler is a Nashville-based artist, radio host, and longtime trucking industry spokesperson whose roots in Texas, Los Angeles, and Nashville have given her deep ties to the music, film, and creative worlds. She has performed for the lighting of the US Capitol Christmas Tree, the laying of the wreaths in Arlington Cemetery, and across the country on her own Truckstop Tour, which served as free entertainment and a respite for the men and women of the trucking industry. Her albums are distributed at TA/Petro truckstops everywhere in the US, and she is a featured speaker and performer at trucking events annually. Her entertainment industry relationships, coupled with her sharp wit and open heart to her hosting style, lend themselves to the high profile guests that will be appearing on the show. Lawler has a way of honing in on real talk and breakthrough moments with her guests, while also finding space to both celebrate their body of work and laugh at themselves in the same breath! It's a hard balance to navigate, and Lawler continues to do it with ease, making this show one creatives will want to both be a guest on and listen to. The first episode, live from New Orleans, featured Fred LeBlanc, frontman of the legendary New Orleans band Cowboy Mouth. 'Doing the We Should Write show with Lindsay Lawler was probably one of the most intense and emotionally rewarding songwriting musical experiences I've ever had in my life,' said LeBlanc. 'And I'm not joking!' The next show airing Wednesday July 30th at noon Central will feature Timothy Howles (AKA Tim Lopez from Plain White T's…Oh hey there Delilah!). Lawler says the phrase 'We Should Write…Right?!' began as an inside joke in Music City nearly 20 years ago—and now, it's blossomed into a full-blown movement, with the radio show serving as the first step toward live events, community building, and creative connection. 'I realized that the conversations I have with my network of friends in the music and entertainment industries are worthy of sharing,' explained Lawler. 'I recently performed once again at the Country Music Hall of Fame, where members of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and I shared stories of how hit songs came to be. It was eye-opening, entertaining and healing for both the audience and for us on stage. And that's but a glimpse of what this show will be. We'll laugh, cry, and then probably laugh again.' WHAT: 'We Should Write.' A weekly podcast hosted by singer-songwriter-personality Lindsay Lawler and featuring the talents of various creatives discussing the transformative power of writing. Soccer-Sheffield Wednesday part company with manager Rohl
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Championship - Sheffield Wednesday v Sheffield United - Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield, Britain - March 16, 2025 Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl before the match Action Images/Craig Brough /File Photo (Reuters) -Sheffield Wednesday have parted company with manager Danny Rohl by mutual consent less than two weeks before the start of the season, the Championship club said on Tuesday. German Rohl, 36, took charge of Wednesday in October 2023 and helped the Yorkshire side avoid relegation from the second tier. He guided them to a 12th-place finish last season. "Sheffield Wednesday would like to thank Danny and his backroom team for their services and wish them well for the future," the club said in a statement. The English Football League (EFL) put Wednesday under transfer restrictions and charged the club last month over unpaid player wages. Owner Dejphon Chansiri was also charged for causing the club to be in breach of EFL regulations. Media reports said Chansiri was looking to sell the Hillsborough-based club. Wednesday will kick off their Championship campaign on August 10 at relegated Leicester City. (Reporting by Chiranjit Ojha in Bengaluru; Editing by Ken Ferris)
