UAE to chair UNDRR Support Group for 2025–2026 term

GENEVA (WAM)The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Support Group unanimously endorsed the appointment of Ambassador Jamal Jama Al Musharakh, UAE's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, as Chair of the Support Group for the 2025–2026 term, as of August 2025.The UAE will assume the Chairmanship from the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, which currently holds the position for the 2024–2025 term. This appointment marks a significant milestone, as the UAE becomes the first Arab country to assume this role.The UAE's leadership reflects the country's strong commitment to multilateralism, sustainable development, and proactive engagement in tackling the rising risks posed by climate change and disasters.Addressing the group during the meeting, Al Musharakh stated, "The UAE is fully committed to leveraging its leadership of the UNDRR Support Group to drive forward practical, long-term disaster risk reduction strategies. The UAE's priority will be to enhance international cooperation, ensuring that disaster resilience becomes integrated into every aspect of development. Furthermore, the country is committed to working closely with all partners to protect the most vulnerable groups and mitigate the growing challenges posed by climate change and disasters."The UNDRR Support Group plays a pivotal role in fostering dialogue among Member States and supporting the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. It also serves as a vital platform for strengthening international coordination and cooperation to reduce disaster risks and enhance resilience to both natural disasters.
As the incoming Chair, the UAE will work to set priorities and guide discussions aimed at addressing the increasing challenges posed by such disasters, including those exacerbated by climate change.

We firmly believe that investing in youth potential is an investment in a secure and sustainable future for the region."For his part, Sadeq Jarrar, Executive Director of the Arab Youth Center, commented, "Empowering youth in critical and future-oriented sectors lies at the heart of our mission at the Arab Youth Center. We believe that investing in young people is the cornerstone of building a brighter future. This partnership with the National Committee reflects our commitment to advancing youth engagement in areas of national priority across Arab countries. Through knowledge-building and skills development, we aim to enable youth to contribute meaningfully to their financial well-being, their communities, and their economies. In doing so, we draw inspiration from the advanced practices and international expertise developed in the United Arab Emirates." This collaboration is based on four key pillars: developing youth capabilities through training and professional development, offering practical secondment opportunities, supporting mentorship and career guidance, and enhancing community awareness through events and media campaigns. He called for a fundamental shift in the humanitarian system from reactive responses to anticipatory action, and stressed the need for 'greater investment in early warning systems and anticipatory financing, particularly for climate-related crises'. Al Musharakh also underscored the critical importance of protecting civilians in conflict zones and ensuring unimpeded humanitarian access, with a specific reference to the situation in Gaza. He said, 'We strongly condemn Israel's continued violations and underline the need to support efforts and endeavors to ensure the immediate, safe, unhindered, and sustainable delivery of aid on a wide scale, through all possible means.' Al Musharakh also participated in a high-level panel titled 'Reimagining the Humanitarian System: Innovative Models to Save Lives, Reduce Suffering, and Promote People's Resilience and Livelihoods'. The panel featured the participation of representatives from key international organisations, including Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at OCHA, and representatives from UNHCR, UNDRR, FAO, WFP, UNICEF, Women for Change South Sudan, and The International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA). In his remarks, Al Musharakh stressed the importance of innovation in humanitarian response. 'Innovation is no longer optional — it is essential,' he stated, calling for improved delivery mechanisms of humanitarian aid aligning with the needs of the impacted populations. He also underscored the need for 'political courage' to drive systemic reform and ensure the humanitarian system remains fit for an ever-evolving situation. The 2025 ECOSOC HAS convened global leaders, humanitarian experts, and diplomats to discuss the evolving challenges and various opportunities facing the international humanitarian system. Key themes included innovation, resilience-building, and strengthening multilateral cooperation in the face of growing global crises such as armed conflict, climate change, and forced displacement. The UAE's active participation reflects its ongoing dedication to fostering innovative, collaborative, and principled approaches to humanitarian responses to the world's most pressing crises.
