Ruben Amorim handed double transfer blow as top target rejects Man Utd move
Ruben Amorim is desperate to land some top quality signings to overhaul his struggling Manchester United squad and he has already taken the first step by landing Wolves forward Matheus Cunha Manchester United have a lot of work to do to return to the Premier League 's summit after their difficult first season under Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach could not arrest the team's alarming slide down the table as they ended up finishing 15th and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham - but now he is aiming to bounce back by securing a raft of top signings. United have already brought in forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62m and are hoping to snap up Brentford frontman Bryan Mbeumo too - despite being rivalled by Spurs. Amorim will also be hoping to shift a number of unwanted stars that will give him more room to manoeuvre in the transfer market amid the club's perilous financial situation. With that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a look through the biggest Manchester United transfer news and gossip. Gyokeres rejects United Without doubt the biggest news in the last 24 hours is a report from Portuguese outlet Record, which claims Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres has turned down the chance to move to Old Trafford. The Swedish forward has been one of United's top targets since Amorim became the club's new head coach - after previously working with Gyokeres at Lisbon. United have watched the player underline his ability and reputation as one of the world's best strikers after netting 53 goals in all competitions But after the Red Devils missed out on Champions League football, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the club to attract Gyokeres, especially with rivals Arsenal also in the mix for his signature. The report claims Gyokeres' agent has informed United he does not want to join them, with Arsenal now securing the upper hand. It has been previously reported that Sporting have rejected a £55m bid for Gyokeres, which is said to have triggered anger from the striker, who said: "There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right." Leverkusen pull out of Garnacho race Another blow for Amorim. The United head coach is eager to shift some of his deadwood - particularly Alejandro Garnacho after falling out with the player. But Sky in Germany are reporting that Bayer Leverkusen are now "unlikely" to make a bid for the Argentine due to the mounting "package of transfer fee and wages" being too high for the German club. United are said to have slapped a £70m price tag on the player despite his difficult season for United. He scored ten goals and assisted nine but only stated 23 games in the Premier League out of a possible 38 and was dropped by Amorim for a number of games. Leverkusen are looking to build after agreeing to let Florian Wirtz join Liverpool for around £116.5m but are unwilling to break the bank for Garnacho. A move to Leverkusen would see the winger reunite with former United boss Erik ten Hag, who has just taken over the Bundesliga side. Garnacho's future at United looks bleak after he was dropped by Amorim for the Europa League final, with the player speaking after the game to question the manager's decision and admitting the team's season was "s***". United set to welcome Leon One silver lining for United amid a string of set-backs. Some supporters might have forgotten they actually agreed a move for a young talent called Diego Leon from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno for around £7m. Left-back Leon has previously earned comparisons to Wayne Rooney given his similar impact at a young age and buzzcut hairstyle. United paid an initial £3.3m with add-ons for the 18-year-old's services but allowed him to stay with the club until the summer. The club will now welcome Leon to their camp at the start of July and his arrival should provide a boost to Amorim as a hungry, young player who wants to add competition and push for a place. Last season he played 28 times for Porteno, scoring three goals, and will now link up with a number of young players United are attempting to develop, including Ayden Heaven, Chido-Obi and Sekou Kone. Thomas Frank to cast eye over £12m Spurs gem as early loan offers land on table
Luka Vuskovic is set to arrive at Tottenham this summer after they struck a deal to sign the Croatian wonderkid from Hajduk Split in September 2023 Thomas Frank is set to cast an eye over 18-year-old Tottenham centre-back Luka Vuskovic in pre-season despite widespread loan interest in the Croatian. Spurs agreed a reported £12million package deal with Hajduk Split for the teenager, then 16, in September 2023 and they're understood to have pipped Manchester City and PSG to his signature. The towering defender starred on loan in Belgium last season with KVC Westerlo, scoring an impressive seven goals from the back, having also previously flourished in Poland during a six-month spell with Radomiak Radom in 2024. Now a series of top-flight clubs from Germany, France and Belgium including Hamburg and Club Brugge have contacted his representatives to register an early interest in signing Vuskovic on loan for the 2025-26 season, should he become available. However, Tottenham are in no immediate rush to make a decision over his future and they're yet to rule out Vuskovic potentially staying put as part of their first-team squad for the forthcoming campaign. Earlier this week, he was handed his senior international debut by Croatia when he was a late substitute in a 5-1 World Cup qualification win over Czechia. Spurs believe they have a major talent on their hands but they intend to manage his development carefully in a bid to ensure he fulfils his potential in north London. Speaking earlier this month, Vuskovic was full of praise for the Europa League winners and shared his excitement about joining the club, stating: 'First of all, I'm looking forward to feeling that level and seeing where I am in relation to the players who just won the Europa League so that I know what I need to work on the most. 'After that, I'll see in agreement with the club which is the smartest next step. The club has proven to be careful and wise in making decisions so far. Belgium has proven to be an ideal league at this stage of my career, and I think it is otherwise a great development league because it gives a lot of opportunities to young players." Belgian side Westerlo have also made no secret of the fact they're keen to forge a partnership with Tottenham to sign more players on loan from Spurs in the future, though their chances of landing Vuskovic for another year look very slim. Alfie Devine also gained valuable senior experience with the Jupiler Pro League outfit, netting six goals in 30 top-flight appearances. In the past six weeks, even before the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, Spurs held a series of meetings with the representatives or their loanees to review their progress. New boss Frank has a proven track record for utilising and developing talent both at Brentford and Brondby, having also previously coached Denmark at various youth levels. Man Utd's three back-up transfer options as Viktor Gyokeres snubs Ruben Amorim
Manchester United were hoping to sign Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer, but Mirror Football understands that the 27-year-old has rejected a move to Old Trafford and would prefer to join Arsenal instead. The striker wants to join a club that will be playing Champions League football next season and United failed to qualify for the tournament after finishing 15th in the Premier League and suffering a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final. The news comes as a major blow for United, with manager Ruben Amorim keen on a reunion with Gyokeres, and the club are now turning their attention to alternative options. The Red Devils are in need of a prolific striker, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee disappointing last season. The pair managed just 17 goals between them in a combined 105 appearances across all competitions and Amorim is desperate to bring in an upgrade. United have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves, but he is expected to play in a slightly deeper role. With all that in mind, Mirror Football takes a look at three potential alternatives to Gyokeres... Hugo Ekitike Hugo Ekitike has been linked with a number of clubs across Europe after an impressive campaign where he scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 games for Eintracht Frankfurt. According to Sky Germany, United have opened talks with Frankfurt over a deal and the Bundesliga side are demanding a fee of around £85million. However, the report adds that both Liverpool and Chelsea are also interested in Ekitike. Victor Osimhen Victor Osimhen is expected to leave Napoli this summer after spending last season on loan at Galatasaray, netting 37 goals in 41 appearances. The Sun are reporting that he has emerged as a 'genuine back-up plan' for United after they missed out on Gyokeres, with Osimhen recently rejecting a hugely lucrative offer from Al-Hilal as he wants to remain in Europe. Jean-Philippe Mateta Crystal Palace star Jean-Philippe Mateta has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford after scoring 17 goals last season and helping his side lift the FA Cup. Mateta would be a more affordable signing given his contract is due to expire in 2027 and French outlet L'Equipe have previously reported that United have 'already positioned themselves' to make a move for the 27-year-old. However, Palace are hoping to convince Mateta to sign a new deal. Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football.
