Operation Gratitude to assemble care packages for SC veterans and first responders
Operation Gratitude works to lift spirits and say 'thank you' to military and first responder communities and their service by creating opportunities for all Americans to express their gratitude through volunteering.
The group will host an inaugural 'Community Cares' event at Johnson Hagood Stadium, where 5,000 care packages will be assembled and later delivered to veterans and first responders to provide them with comfort, encouragement, and offer a tangible connection between local communities and those who serve.
'This is what our mission is all about. Empowering Americans to take action and show their gratitude,' said Meg Barron, Executive Director of Operation Gratitude. 'We heard loud and clear from our supporters that they wanted opportunities to participate in local assembly events like those we host in Los Angeles and San Antonio. Through Community Cares, we're making that vision a reality, one community at a time. We are honored to join with the Charleston community to say thank you to South Carolina's Veterans and First Responders.'
Charleston volunteers will also have an opportunity to write letters of appreciation to accompany each care package.
The assembly is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Johnson Hagood Stadium (68 Hagood Ave.)

American pet owners, especially Gen Zers and millennials, increasingly see their pets as their fur-babies, and even buy them surprise gifts on their birthday and for Christmas. Pets are actually getting more presents than some people. About 3 in 10 Americans buy Christmas presents for their pet, according to data by YouGov, while only 1 in 10 get gifts for their co-workers or neighbors. Owners love their furry companions so much that more than half of them would be willing to pay over a thousand dollars to save them from a life-threatening ailment. When YouGov asked pet owners if they would save their closest pet or a person from a sinking boat, about 43 percent of respondents said the person, and at least 39 percent went with their closest pet. One user, Merely_michela, commented: "The way they were gathered around the sonogram." Oreoandpumpkinspice posted: "They trained you purrfectly!" Somaliamore added: "I'm sure it's a walk in the park after that." Another user, ildragoscintillante, commented: "I think I have watched this video about 20 times now, looking for the right comment to write. But the only thing I can think of is [10 laughing faces]." CARES, City of Binghamton giving away free backpacks, school supplies: Locations and times
More than 1,360 students in the City of Binghamton will have an opportunity to receive free bookbags and school supplies ahead of the 2025-26 school year, Mayor Jared Kraham announced Aug. 18. This year's giveaway will mark the largest backpack and school supply program since the city and CARES began partnering in 2017, according to the mayor's office. The CEO of CARES Advocates For Families Inc., Denise Yull, said the partnership with the city is key to helping families overcome the increased cost of living. "Each year CARES leads the Backpack & School Supply Drive because too many of our families are working more than one job, living at or below the poverty line, and now face the rising cost of living, and need our collective support; by coming together for our children, we affirm that they are all our children," Yull said in a release. "CARES is committed to doing what it takes to help them thrive and we thank Mayor Kraham for his continued partnership in making this possible.' Since 2017, the City of Binghamton has partnered with CARES to provide students from Pre-K to 12th grade with the essentials to thrive in the classroom. This year the City of Binghamton contributed $20,000 from a Community Development Block Grant to help fund the initative. 'As another school year approaches, the City of Binghamton is again working with CARES to provide hundreds of children with the basic supplies they need to learn and thrive in the classroom," Mayor Kraham said. "The program helps relieve some of the financial burden that back-to-school shopping puts on families and is another investment in our young people.' School supplies and bookbags will be available on a first come first serve basis. Children have to be present to recieve a bookbag. There will be five pickup locations for supplies and bookbags Thursday through Saturday. Temporary closure of Mason Street Bridge in Green Bay causes traffic delays
