Agencies Switzerland's president and other top officials were traveling to Washington on Tuesday in a hastily arranged trip aimed at striking a deal with the Trump administration over steep U.S. tariffs that have cast a pall over Swiss industries like chocolates, machinery and watchmaking. President Karin Keller-Sutter was leading the delegation after last week's announcement that exports of Swiss goods to the U.S. will face a whopping 39% percent tariff starting Thursday — a move that took many Swiss business leaders by rate is over 2 1/2 times higher than the one on European Union goods exported to the U.S. and nearly four times higher than on British exports to the U.S. It's also more than the 31% that Switzerland had been set to face when U.S. President Donald Trump announced his 'Liberation Day' tariffs on products from dozens of countries in early Swiss government said the trip was 'to facilitate meetings with the U.S. authorities at short notice and hold talks with a view to improving the tariff situation for Switzerland.' She was leading a team that included Economy Minister Guy an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, Trump alluded to the call, saying 'the woman was nice, but she didn't want to listen' and that he had told her: 'We have a $41 billion deficit with you, Madame ... and you want to pay 1% tariffs.' 'I said, 'you're not going to pay 1%,'' he added. It was not immediately clear where that $41 billion figure came from. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the United States ran a $38.3 billion trade imbalance on goods last year with Switzerland. Swiss officials have argued that American goods face virtually zero tariffs in Switzerland, and the Swiss government says the wealthy Alpine country is the sixth-biggest foreign investor in the United States and the leading investor in research and development. 'It's hard to negotiate when you're dealing with someone as unpredictable as Donald Trump,' said Ivan Slatkine, head of the Federation of Romandie Enterprises, which groups companies in French-speaking Switzerland. He expressed concern that Swiss goods could become less competitive to rival products from the neighboring EU. 'We had a (Swiss) government that gave the impression the deal was done, it only awaited a signature from the president,' he said by phone. 'We have the impression that we were punished, but we don't know why.' Switzerland's powerful pharmaceutical industry -- which promised tens of billions of investments in the United States in recent months amid the tariff worries -- is exempt from the 39% rate.

Raducanu adds Nadal's former coach Roig to team full-time
PA Media/DPA London Emma Raducanu has added Rafael Nadal's former coach Francis Roig to her team on a full-time basis ahead of this month's US Open, the PA news agency understands. The 2021 winner at Flushing Meadows has worked with British coach Mark Petchey on an informal basis since March and enjoyed a positive run of results. However, Petchey's TV commitments meant he was always unable to become Raducanu's full-time coach and after a trial with Roig following Wimbledon, the 22-year-old will begin work with him in Cincinnati this week after he agreed a contract until the end of 2025. Raducanu has struggled to settle with a coach in recent years until her part-time work with Petchey started to pay dividends earlier this season. A WTA 1000 quarter-final showing at the Miami Open in March was followed by a round-of-16 run at the Italian Open before she made the last eight in the first women's tournament at Queen's Club. Aryna Sabalenka proved too strong for Raducanu in round three at Wimbledon, but this was backed up by a semi-final at the Citi Open as the British number one targets being seeded at the US Open later this month. TV commentator Petchey, who worked with Andy Murray at the start of his career, revealed in July that Raducanu would need to find a full-time coach soon and she has in Roig. Spanish coach Roig worked with Nadal alongside Nadal's uncle Toni for the majority of the 22-time grand slam champion's career and more recently was part of Matteo Berrettini's backroom staff. Raducanu will stay close to Petchey, PA understands, but turns her focus back to rising up the WTA rankings with a strong display at the Cincinnati Open over the next fortnight. Djokovic drops out of Cincinnati after skipping Toronto Novak Djokovic has opted not to play the Cincinnati Masters after he already failed to make an appearance in Toronto, organizers confirmed on Monday following a report by The Athletic. This means Djokovic will have not played a professional match in more than a month when he starts another bid for a 25th Grand Slam title at the US Open later in August. The 38-year-old Serbian last played at Wimbledon on July 11 where he was defeated by eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals. Italy's Sinner, 23 and current world number 1, and Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, 22, are set to play in the Cincinnati Masters 1,000 after they also skipped Toronto, with main draw play due to begin on August 7.

Florian Wirtz's first look at Anfield gave fans a glimpse of why the club made him their - and with add-ons potentially a British - record signing with some clever touches and interplay and almost the opening goal. Head coach Arne Slot believes the Germany international will replace the creativity they lost from the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid. 'I think there is always room for improvement in every department and we have added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons,' said the Dutchman.
