What about the Falcons, 8 and 9 last year, over and under 7.5 CO rise, repeat, or retreat on Atlantic compared to how you felt a year ago right now?
And this is a tough one, man.
This is a tough one for me, because so much of it is predicated on Michael Penn, right?
And, and so much of it is predicated, I think defensively you went and you drafted two defensive ends in the first round.
Um, I think you have to get production immediately cause I mean, they needed.
They pass rush in the worst possible way.
They got to get it out of rookies right away and it's a little iffy, you know, it's, it's, it's hard to, to bend, depend on, um, you know, edge rushers coming out of the box as rookies and just blowing it up, which is really what they need.

But again, I do think a lot of this is where the young players now go surrounding Penn.
Um, you know, Bijon, can we see him step onto the level of like Saquan Barkley last year?
Like, no, I'm not saying.
2000 yards rushing, but just be a dominant running back, um, you know, regardless of the circumstance.
Drake London, does he take a big, you know, step forward that, you know, I think we, we've seen him moving again in the right direction, but it's, it does Pennick put it together.
Now he's had the whole offseason passing program.
He'll have had the offseason passing program as the number one quarterback, um.

You know, I thought he showed glimpses last year down the stretch, um, but in no way did I look at him and go, yeah, yeah, he'll take that big step in, in year two.
that to me is the must.
So I'm, I'm probably, I, I'm probably, I'm gonna do this with every team, I think.
Repeat, I think I think it's gonna be a lot of the same last year.
But yeah, I'm in a little bit of, uh, retreat mode because I can't sit here and tell you I feel better about the Falcons in the NFC South than I did.
At any point in the past year, we came into last year with such high hopes, right?
Like, oh wow, Bijon and Pitts in London and all these guys, and I thought we saw a lot of the flaws of the Atlanta Falcons throughout last year.

Cousins wasn't good for sure, but Pitts obviously just ain't it, like it ain't happening.
Like I I I keep hearing about the breakout every single year and it's just not happening.
The guys around Drake London in a receiver room and not really great.
Dijon's awesome.
And look, if you want to say, I think Michael Pennix is gonna be a star in this league and he's gonna have that second year jump, I can buy it.
I, I can see it, but we, we're basing this off a very small sample size where he looked like you said, Charles, he, he looked good, like he looked promising, but I'm not like that guy's arrived, he's an absolute superstar.

So, If Pendix makes that big leap and these first round pass rushers fix that issue, OK, I, I can see the Falcons be better, but I'm not betting on that.
I'm, I'm gonna say I feel worse about the Falcons competing for a division title than I did at at any point in the past, uh, you know, 12 months.

Falcons defense ready to make a statement
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Falcons defense has been overshadowed this offseason by stories centered around quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr. However, if the Falcons have any hope of making the playoffs for first time in eight years, they will need better production from their defense. Specifically, the defensive line. Last year, Atlanta produced 31 sacks, which was second fewest in the league. Only New England's 28 ranked worse. The front office did make some moves after the year. They released defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, which was surprising since he won the Walter Payton Man of the Year for the Falcons. Atlanta put a heavy emphasis on the defensive side of the ball during the draft. Four of their five draft picks were defensive players, which includes their two first round picks linebacker Jalon Walker from Georgia and defensive end James Pearce from Tennessee. Atlanta also needs to improve its defensive third-down conversation rate. They gave up over 45% last year, which was second worst in the league. The Falcons continue the final day of mandatory minicamp tomorrow, but the final practice is not open to the media. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Pro Football Focus gives Falcons one reason for optimism in 2025
Pro Football Focus gives Falcons one reason for optimism in 2025 PFF says second-year QB Michael Penix Jr. should give Falcons fans a reason to believe this season The Atlanta Falcons are kicking off their second day of mandatory minicamp and there's a genuine feeling of optimism surrounding the team. The offense is ready to take off with Michael Penix Jr. at quarterback, while the defense added two first-round edge rushers and some new faces in the secondary. At the end of the day, though, the Falcons will be judged by their record and whether or not they make the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Last season, the team started 6-3 but collapsed over the second half. Will 2025 finally be the year Atlanta gets over the hump? Pro Football Focus gave every team one reason for optimism ahead of the 2025 season. For the Falcons, PFF highlighted a full year of Penix as something to look forward to. Penix made just three starts during his rookie campaign but showed plenty of promise in the process. Over the final three weeks of the regular season, he recorded an 84.0 PFF passing grade while producing nine big-time throws, the second most in the NFL. He was more than willing to attack defenses with vertical passes and quickly developed a nice rapport with top receiver Drake London. Penix should give Falcons fans plenty of hope based on what we saw last year. -- Dalton Wasserman, PFF Atlanta waited a little bit too long to put Penix in last season, but Morris won't make the same mistake this time around. Even with Kirk Cousins still on the roster, Penix is the undisputed starter at quarterback. The former No. 8 overall selection has all the tools to put up elite numbers in Atlanta's offense. When he took over in Week 16, there was a noticeable uptick in big plays as Penix's big arm opened up the entire field for the team's many weapons. The numbers weren't overly impressive on paper -- 775 passing yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions -- but the former Washington star showed a unique mix for poise and fearlessness that only the great quarterbacks in this league seem to have. With Penix leading the way, the 2025 season should be a fun one for Atlanta.

The NFL's most expensive backup QB, plus USMNT's nightmare
The Pulse Newsletter 📣 | This is The Athletic's daily sports newsletter. Sign up here to receive The Pulse directly in your inbox. Good morning! Sign your first-round pick today. Just do it. It's difficult to fathom how bad things are for the USMNT right now. Let's try anyway: The U.S. enters the Gold Cup with plenty on the line, maybe even Pochettino's job. He took the blame after last night's debacle, which is good PR. But it's fair to wonder, bad roster or not, whether his coaching is taking root. I went to Martin Rogers, our head of U.S. soccer, for a status update the team: 💬 How bad is it? The program will be judged on the World Cup, but a year out, the prognosis could hardly be gloomier. No positive vibe around the squad, little passion, few ideas. As a result — none of that host nation momentum to build interest and support ahead of what's supposed to be the moment of a lifetime. I highly recommend reading Paul Tenorio's column on the situation, which offers a simple, yet brutal, solution: We should blame everyone for the disaster. Yuck. The Americans start Gold Cup action Sunday. Can't wait? Legendary quarterbacks have been in Kirk Cousins' position, benched for a younger talent. Peyton Manning got demoted for Brock Osweiler once. Tony Romo gave way to Dak Prescott. And, of course, Drew Bledsoe's injury helped birth the career of Tom Brady. None of them stuck around, though, and none of them were quite as expensive as the Falcons quarterback, either, which makes the 14-year veteran one of the most interesting stories in the NFL right now. Two quick points: So, Cousins is at Falcons minicamp, behaving as normally as possible as he and the team wait for a fairytale trade scenario to appear. I asked our Falcons writer Josh Kendall for a vibe check from Atlanta: What's the mood like at minicamp with Cousins around? It's hard for me to remember such a unique QB situation. 💬 The situation does feel unprecedented in some ways, but on the surface, at least, things are remarkably normal. Cousins said all the right things Tuesday in his first appearance with the local media since the end of the season, and Penix so far in his young career has been impossible to fluster on or off the field. The caveat to all this is it's easy for everyone to play nice in June. The vibe might feel very different in November. Gut feeling: Do you think the team trades him before the season? 💬 I still believe the Falcons want to trade Cousins, but the Steelers' signing of Aaron Rodgers filled the last glaring hole in the league. Atlanta now has to wait and see if an injury or ineffectiveness opens up a spot after training camps begin. Even if it does, though, it would have to be a place Cousins is willing to go because he has a no-trade clause. What a setup. It's hard to imagine this just being the status quo for the rest of the year. I thought the 'Scoop City' podcast crew went into great detail on the situation, too, which you can listen to here. Knicks striking out? Mavericks officials believe coach Jason Kidd, one of the Knicks' top targets to replace Tom Thibodeau, will stay in Dallas, sources told The Athletic yesterday. Also, according to an ESPN report last night, New York requested interviews with both Rockets coach Ime Udoka and Timberwolves coach Chris Finch — and both were denied. Already seems like a disaster from here. Advertisement Rodgers casually drops wedding news New Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers showed up to minicamp yesterday wearing a wedding ring, which he confirmed in a news conference was not just a smart ring. Rodgers said he's been married 'a couple of months,' though it's unclear to whom. See his full comments here. More news 📫 Love The Pulse?
