Housing construction begins for Irular families in Mannur after three years, with funding from TAHDCO
These families are currently living in hutments near waterbodies without access to electricity, basic sanitation, and in constant fear of attacks by snakes or bugs. Since November 2021, 88 families who were awarded land titles have been waiting for the district administration to construct homes for them.
A senior official from the Tamil Nadu's Tribal Welfare department confirmed that the construction would begin in a week at two sites - at Mannur, near the office of a global logistics firm, and Katrambakkam.
'The funds for construction would be availed from the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO) under the Tholkudi scheme for tribals,' the senior official said.
The assurance comes as a great relief to the Irular families as there were talks of the houses being constructed under the Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam scheme, where the beneficiaries would have to contribute a portion of the funds.
The officials have promised to start construction of the homes on May 1 and complete it by October before the North-East Monsoon, said Kavitha Thandoni, President of Sriperumbudur Irular Makkal Nala Sangam (Peoples welfare organisation), and daughter of one of the beneficiaries at Mannur village.
The announcement comes following regular protests in front of local taluk officials last month due to their alleged indifference in the issue. They had also met with Tamil Nadu Tribal Welfare director S Annadurai to highlight their grievances.

Kancheepuram misses deadline to build houses for irular tribals; families still in huts amid delays
CHENNAI: The Kancheepuram district administration has missed its promised deadline of August 15 for constructing 88 houses for Irular tribal families in Katrambakkam and Mannur villages. The families, who live in huts near waterbodies, have been waiting for the state government to construct houses since 2021 when they received pattas (land titles). Construction of the houses on identified land in these two villages started in March this year. Senior IAS officer and managing director of Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO) KS Kandasamy, on May 1, inspected the works and promised the Irulars that the houses would be delivered by August 15. However, a status update as on Friday shows in Katrambakkam, only the foundation and base level work has been completed in some houses, while in others some pillars have been erected. In Mannur, most house plots have only dug pits with work moving at a slow pace. Worried at the prospect of spending another North-East Monsoon with snakes and mosquitoes invading their huts, the tribal families have requested the authorities to complete the works before October. Acknowledging the delay, a senior government official told TNIE it would be finished within a month.

Mizoram hosts NSS fest to foster community service among youths
1 2 3 4 Aizawl: Mizoram sports and youth services minister Lalnghinglova Hmar on Wednesday inaugurated the North East National Service Scheme (NSS) Festival 2025 at the Art & Culture Auditorium, Berawtlang. The event, which began on Tuesday and will conclude on Saturday, is jointly organised by the State NSS Cell under the department of sports and youth services, Mizoram, and the Regional Directorate of NSS under the ministry of youth affairs and sports. In his inaugural address, Hmar highlighted the importance of NSS in instilling civic responsibility and community awareness among youths. He also commended the contributions of NSS volunteers, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as their ongoing involvement in plantation drives and cleanliness campaigns. Hmar further encouraged volunteers from the northeast to learn from each other's cultures and histories, emphasising that their participation in NSS is a response to the nation's call for nation-building. D Carthigueane, regional director of NSS (NER), Guwahati, provided an overview of the festival. He noted that NSS is one of the largest student movements in the country, with nearly 40 lakh volunteers and an expected increase to 65 lakh. He also said the northeast is the only region to host a dedicated NSS festival, urging participants to view this event as a valuable opportunity for mutual learning. The festival is being attended by around 250 NSS volunteers and programme officers from Mizoram, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim and Meghalaya.

New Garia Metro station closed after cracks found in pillars
1 2 Kolkata: The North-South Metro's terminal Kavi Subhas station at New Garia was closed temporarily after cracks were discovered in the last four pillars on which the Up platform stands. All trains are now being terminated at Shahid Khudiram, the elevated metro station at Dhalai Bridge in Garia. It is the second last metro station on the city's southern fringes. Metro Railway workers spotted the cracks in the pillars on Monday morning and alerted their supervisors, following which inspections were conducted. "Around 12.45 pm, the metro station's services were suspended. Preliminary investigations suggest ground subsidence due to the heavy downpour over the past few days. The uneven ground settlement seemed to have caused cracks on the four piers on the Up platform at Kavi Subhas station. As a measure of precaution and to ensure the safety of passengers, services to and from Kavi Subhas station have been withdrawn. "I sensed something amiss as the digital signboards for the next train's timing went blank and trains arrived late," said Dipti Raut, a passenger at Park Street station. Officials confirmed this was the first time since the North-South Line's southern extension (in two phases in 2009-10) to New Garia from Tollygunge that a metro station was closed. "The design of the elevated section from Tollygunge to Kavi Subhas is flawed. The pier strengthening work was supposed to start long ago.
