New High Accuracy Current Sense Amps Compatible with Both Negative and High Voltages

Santa Clara, CA and Kyoto Japan, June 11, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — ROHM Semiconductor today announced they have developed a new lineup of high accuracy current sense amps – the BD1423xFVJ-C and the BD1422xG-C. Both series are qualified under the AEC-Q100 automotive reliability standard. The BD1423xFVJ-C series, offered in the TSSOP-B8J package, supports input voltages up to +80V, making it ideal for high-voltage environments such as 48V DC-DC converters, redundant power supplies, auxiliary batteries, and electric compressors. The lineup includes three models with different gain settings: BD14230FVJ-C, BD14231FVJ-C and BD14232FVJ-C. For lower voltage applications, the BD1422xG-C, available in the compact SSOP6 package, supports input voltages up to +40V. This makes them suitable for space-constrained automotive systems such as current monitoring and overcurrent protection in 5V/12V power supply networks used in body and drivetrain domains. Like its high-voltage counterpart, this series also includes three gain options: BD14220G-C, BD14221G-C and BD14222G-C. In recent years, the automotive market has seen a growing adoption of 48V systems alongside conventional 5V/12V power supplies, fueled by the rising popularity of electric vehicles. Furthermore, as vehicle functionality becomes more advanced, the need for precise monitoring and control across a wide range of applications continues to increase, placing a greater importance on high-accuracy current sensing. Current sense amps indirectly measure the current flowing through a circuit by amplifying the small voltage drop across a shunt resistor. The resulting signal is then sent to an ADC or comparator for system control and monitoring. ROHM's automotive-grade current sense amps meet market demands by leveraging proven analog expertise. This enables high-accuracy current sensing with compatibility for both negative and high voltage environments, contributing to improved safety and reliability in automotive applications, particularly electric vehicles. The newly released products improve space efficiency by integrating key current sensing circuitry, typically consisting of an operational amplifier and discrete components, into a single package. As a result, current detection is possible by simply connecting a shunt resistor. The devices also feature a two-stage amplifier configuration, comprised of a chopper amplifier at the input and an auto-zero amplifier at the output. Internal resistor matching for gain setting ensures stable, accurate current sensing (±1%) while minimizing the effects of temperature variations. Furthermore, current detection accuracy is maintained even when an external RC filter circuit added for noise suppression, significantly reducing design complexity and development time. Additional features include -14V negative voltage tolerance that supports back electromotive force, reverse connection, and negative voltage input. Going forward, ROHM will continue to deliver optimal solutions that contribute to higher precision and enhanced reliability in automotive equipment. Product Lineup BD14230FVJ-CBD14231FVJ-CBD14232FVJ-CBD14220-G-CBD14221-G-CBD14222-G-C ROHM also offers the BD1421x-LA of current sense amps designed for industrial equipment applications.

Porsche Drops Truth Bomb on U.S. Production Plans Amid Tariff Negotiations

Porsche has dismissed a Bloomberg report stating that the automaker is considering moving some of its final assembly to the U.S. to ease tariff impacts. The initial report referenced Porsche possibly installing interior components or fitting tires in the U.S., where it currently has no production presence. Instead, Porsche restated its stance from April that U.S. production localization doesn't make financial sense due to its relatively low sales volume. In April, Porsche CFO Jochen Breckner added that U.S. localization wouldn't occur even if the automaker partnered with another brand from its parent company, Volkswagen Group. Still, Volkswagen Group is seriously considering expanding its U.S. manufacturing footprint with another one of its subsidiaries, Audi. An Audi spokesperson reportedly told Automotive News "We want to increase our presence in the U.S.," while adding that the company is confident it'll finalize specific details with Volkswagen Group by the year's end. Volkswagen currently operates one U.S. plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and its competitors, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, have factories in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, respectively. Porsche's problems in 2025 aren't limited to U.S. tariffs. During Q1, the brand's sales fell 42% in China. Four years ago, Porsche achieved its highest annual sales in China, at 95,671. Chinese consumers are gravitating away from Porsche and turning to newer companies like Xiaomi and BYD's high-end Yangwang brand. Xiaomi's first model, the electric SU7 sport sedan, thrived in China with its Porsche-inspired styling available at a lower price. The $72,591 Xiaomi SU7 Ultra variant with 1,548 horsepower received about 10,000 pre-orders in two hours, slightly exceeding Porsche's Q1 China sales this year. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said, "We don't care about the volume," and that the company was more concerned with keeping its prices at a high level, "appropriate for Porsche," Reuters reports. However, Blume also told Porsche investors at the company's annual conference on May 21: "Our market in China has literally collapsed," according to The New York Times. Last month, Porsche delayed its all-electric versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman for the second time, citing difficulty sourcing the models' high-performance battery cells. In April, Porsche said drivers could expect the two electric vehicles (EVs) in 2026, but its most recent delay pushes the release to at least 2027. Porsche has scaled back its financial outlook for 2025 by about 2 billion euros ($2.28 billion), with an expected profit margin range decline of between 6.5% and 8.5% from 10% to 12%. Oliver Blume's desire to maintain Porsche's prices and keep the company's production out of the U.S. makes it likely that the automaker will raise its lineup's costs. Blume, who is also Volkswagen Group's CEO, confirmed he spoke directly to the U.S. commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, in Washington, D.C., but agreed with Lutnick to keep the conversation's details confidential. However, Porsche is far from the only company that could increase prices because of tariffs, and some of Volkswagen Group's other subsidiaries, such as Audi, can ease tariff impacts with increased U.S. manufacturing. Porsche's approach is more likely to hurt the company in its second-largest market, China, as the country's electric vehicle price war heats up. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. The Newest Nürburgring Lap Record Belongs to China

While the U.S. has pretty much banned Chinese-made cars by tariffing the value out of them, Chinese brands continue to prove they are a force to reckon with, now and if they ever come to our shores. The latest proof of that has just been set by the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, an all-electric sedan that just reset the lap record for electric sedans at the Nürburgring. It's a record that was once set by Germany's own Porsche in 2004. This isn't the first time the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra has set a record lap at the track known as 'the Green Hell.' In October of 2024, the stripped-down prototype went out and shattered the record for four-door vehicles by setting a 6:46.874 lap time. Of course, it wasn't a full production vehicle, but it still set that impressive lap on a partially wet track and even lost power for around 12 seconds during the run. Xiaomi did declare, however, that it would return to the Nürburgring with a production version of the SU7 Ultra and reset the production electric sedan record. April 1st would mark the day that Xiaomi would do it, but it would need to beat the official record of 7 minutes, 7.55 seconds—a record recently set by the 2025 Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach package. The SU7 Ultra would also utilize track ready parts just as the Porsche did with a set of Bilstein Evo T1 coilovers, Endless high-performance brake pads for its carbon ceramic brake system, upgraded motor and battery cooling system, and high-performance tires. With Vincent Radermecker—former World Touring Car and British Touring Car driver—behind the wheel, the 1,527-hp triple-motor sedan crossed the line in 7:04.957 and stole the production EV sedan record. To put this time in further perspective, the SU7 Ultra starts at $73,724 (when converting from 529,900 Chinese Yuan, at the time of writing) and set a time faster than the Rimac Nevera. The Nevera is an all-electric hypercar that starts at $2.2 million with four motors outputting 1,888 hp and it was beat by 0.341of a second (a time of 7:05.298 for its official production car record) by a sedan that can have a fridge equipped inside the center console (there is no word if the record setter was chilling some drinks during the run). The SU7 Ultra also hit a top speed of 214.994 mph racing down the Döttinger Höhe straight. It's safe to say that Xiaomi has helped put the world on further notice that the Chinese OEMs are not slacking around—and why Ford's Jim Farley loves his Xiaomi.
