Euro 2025: Germany beats France in shootout despite 11th-minute red card
Forced to play 10-vs.-11 for most of the match due to an 11th-minute red card, the Germans beat France in a shootout to advance out of the quarterfinals. It was the first time in tournament history a team won a game after falling behind with 10 players.
Their reward is a matchup with Spain on Wednesday. England faces Italy in the other semifinal on Tuesday, after a dramatic win of its own.
Germany is easily the most successful team in the Women's Euro history with seven titles plus an eighth as West Germany, though they've fallen short in the last two tournaments after winning six straight.
They appeared doomed to a second quarterfinal loss in three tournaments when defender Kathrin Hendrich was called for a red card on a truly pointless hair pull during a free kick. Not only was Germany relegated to 10 players on the field, France was also given a penalty that Grace Geyoro converted to take a 1-0 lead.
No team had ever won a Euro match from the position Germany found itself in, but it scored the equalizer 10 minutes later on a corner kick via a header from Sjoeke Nüsken.
Both teams had the opportunity to break the 1-1 tie from there. France appeared to score the go-ahead goal in the 40th minute, but was called offsides. Germany got a penalty kick in the 68th minute, but France stopped it.
The game went to extra time, then shootouts after a scoreless half-hour. Both teams missed only one of their first six shots, until Janina Minge scored on the seventh shot and Ann-Katrin Berger stopped Amel Majri's do-or-die shot.
Spain, the only team in the field ranked higher by FIFA than Germany, now awaits, but it's going to be hard to argue Germany didn't survive a harder challenge on Saturday.

Leeds confirm signing of Anton Stach from Hoffenheim
Leeds United have completed the signing of Anton Stach from Bundesliga club Hoffenheim. The Athletic reported on July 19 that Leeds were in the process of finalising a deal for the 26-year-old worth in excess of €20million (£17.3m). The midfielder has signed a four-year contract at Elland Road. Stach began his career with lower-league German side VfL Osnabruck, making his senior debut for the club's reserve team in 2017. Stach and Nmecha were part of the Germany squad which won the European Under-21 Championship in 2021, both playing in a 1-0 win over Portugal in the final. Leeds hold an interest in Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz, though they had a bid of £26m plus £6m in add-ons rejected by the London club earlier this summer, as first reported by The Athletic in June. Stach is United's sixth arrival of the summer and their fourth standing at 6ft 2in or taller: he is an enormous 6ft 4in and underlines, yet further, the profile of player Leeds are targeting as they prepare to return to the top flight. Like four of the previous five new summer signings at Leeds, Stach is also 26 with the best years of his career ahead of him. He joins Longstaff in a midfield unit which is already looking far stronger than last season's. Advertisement Stach will bring physicality and defensive dependability to the midfield at Elland Road. He began last season as a centre-back for Hoffenheim and did not move forward in their Bundesliga line-up until late November. He offers Farke versatility in that sense but his stand-out statistics centre on interceptions, blocks, clearances and aerial duels. Stach is going to put his body between the ball and United's goal, while clearing house in the air whenever possible. At a fee in excess of £17.3m, Stach is likely to be a regular starter for Leeds. Longstaff has arrived for a minimum £12m too, leaving captain Ethan Ampadu, 2024-25 talisman Ao Tanaka and Ilia Gruev to scrap it out with them for minutes.

Mathieu van der Poel pulls out of Tour de France with pneumonia
MONTPELLIER, France (AP) — Mathieu van der Poel has withdrawn from the Tour de France ahead of Tuesday's stage up to the Mont Ventoux as he suffers from pneumonia, his team said. The versatile Dutchman, who wore the yellow jersey and won a stage during the opening week of the race, experienced 'symptoms of a common cold over the past few days,' his Alpecin-Deceuninck team said a few hours before Stage 16. Van der Poel's condition worsened 'significantly' during Monday's second rest day and was taken to an hospital in the southern city of Narbonne with a fever for further examinations. 'Medical tests revealed that Mathieu is suffering from pneumonia,' the team said. 'In consultation with the medical staff, it was decided that he can no longer continue the race. His health is the top priority, and rest and recovery are now essential.'
