9 new officers sworn into Springfield Police Department
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — On Thursday, departing Springfield Police Chief Ken Scarlette had the honor of swearing in nine new officers.
In his second to last day on the job, Scarlette swore in the nine officers during a ceremony held in the City Council Chambers. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Misty Buscher, city officials, and family and friends as the newest officers took their oath of service.

The following officers were sworn into the Springfield Police Department:
Parker Adams
Jacob Burton
Dawson Combs
Alexander Deleon
Dakota Moser
Hannah Smith
Hunter Thompson
Matthew Von Behren Jr.
Mark Williams
Seven of the nine new officers graduated from the Macon County Law Enforcement Training Center on April 25, where they were able to complete their basic law enforcement training. Additionally, the other two officers are joining the department through lateral transfer from other law enforcement agencies.

All nine officers are currently assigned to the Springfield Police Academy where they are undergoing additional department-specific training. Over the course of the next few weeks, these officers will be assigned to the Field Operations Division and start the field training program, in which they will work alongside veteran officers to finish their transition into active service.
'We're proud to welcome these individuals to our department and to the City of Springfield,' Scarlette said. 'They have demonstrated commitment, integrity, and the desire to serve their community—values we hold in the highest regard.'

Two balaclava-clad men threatened a security guard with firearms and stole a minibus taxi from the Eastern Cape Treasury offices in Bhisho. The provincial treasury has condemned the incident and plans to enhance security measures, which include electric fencing and CCTV cameras. Police have launched an investigation and asked for public assistance to locate the stolen vehicle and the suspects. The Eastern Cape Treasury has condemned the brazen robbery on Monday at its offices in Bhisho. This after two armed men cornered and tied up a security guard before stealing the department's minibus taxi. The two men also made off with an occurrence book register. According to Eastern Cape police, the incident happened at around 02:45 on Monday. Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said: 'According to reports, two unidentified African male suspects, both armed and wearing balaclavas, entered the guard room where a security officer was on duty.' The first man, Gantana said, threatened the security officer with a firearm, demanding keys to a state-owned Toyota Quantum that was parked outside. The guard reportedly informed the man that he did not have the vehicle's keys. 'During this confrontation, a second suspect entered the guard room carrying a firearm and cable ties. The security officer was strapped [around] both his hands and feet with cable ties. Shortly after, the officer observed the second suspect driving away in the state vehicle. 'The first suspect then seized the occurrence book register from the scene before fleeing in the stolen [vehicle] with his accomplice,' Gantana said. The security guard was not injured during the incident. The vehicle is yet to be recovered. Provincial Treasury spokesperson Mamela Ndamase said the department was exploring ways to enhance the security of its car park 'as incidents relating to state vehicles are on the rise'. 'The interventions may include the installation of an electric fence and CCTV cameras,' Ndamase said. This is a concerning and disturbing matter for the department, considering that it doesn't only violate the security of the department and our valuable resources, but it also poses a threat to the lives of the security personnel that is guarding our premises and resources.' Gantana said no arrests have been made. '[Police in] Bhisho [have] launched an intensive investigation and appeals to the public for assistance. Anyone with information regarding the suspects, the stolen Toyota Quantum (GGL 242 EC) is urged to contact the Bhisho SAPS or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.'

Action on properties at centre of crime issues
Closure orders have been secured for two Cornish properties at the centre of alleged drug crimes and anti-social behaviour. Devon and Cornwall Police said the orders for the buildings on Berries Avenue in Bude had been granted after officers received reports of suspected drug dealing, drug-related violence and anti-social behaviour. The force said reports included people visiting the properties at all hours of the day including some who had taken drugs, which led to further disturbances. The orders make it an offence for anyone to enter either address for three months. Man fatally stabbed by group on Chicago's Southwest Side
A man was stabbed to death by a group in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood on Wednesday night, according to Chicago police. According to the Chicago Department, a 23-year-old man got into a fight with a woman he knew in the 4300 block of South California Avenue just after 11:15 p.m. Chicago police said that's when the group the man was with started attacking him. During the attack, someone in the group stabbed the man with a sharp object. The 23-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene. The victim's identity is unknown at this time. No arrests have been made. Police are investigating.
