Mondo Duplantis soars to break pole vault world record for 13th time
The double-Olympic champion maintained his tradition of improving on his previous record by one centimetre, with his second attempt at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial overhauling the mark he set in Stockholm in June.
Duplantis had looked a little off his best form, missing his first attempt at 6.11 and, after Greece's Emmanouil Karalis retired having failed twice at the same height, the Swede had the bar raised to make his usual world record attempt.
The 25-year-old twice world champion was unsuccessful on his first try and while he rattled the bar slightly on his second effort, Duplantis looked up almost in disbelief to see he had again reached a new height in the discipline he dominates.
"I love Hungary very much. The track is very good, I love the crowd, I would like to return, thank you," Duplantis said.
Duplantis, who won his second world title in the same stadium in 2023, ran straight to the crowd to celebrate with his partner Desire Inglander and his family.
On Monday, Duplantis missed most of the press conference ahead of the Budapest meeting, apologising when he turned up late, saying he had a lot of work to do on his time management.
"I think I'll have to make up for it tomorrow with a big leap," Duplantis said.
He duly stayed true to his word to the delight of the Budapest crowd, and has now soared 15 centimetres higher than Sergey Bubka, who Duplantis once described as 'mythological'.
The American-born Duplantis first broke the world record in 2020 in Poland, with his leap of 6.17 surpassing by one centimetre the previous record set by Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie six years earlier.
Lavillenie had beaten Bubka's best jump of 6.14, which had stood for almost 20 years, but Duplantis has taken the sport to another level and on Saturday competes at the Silesia Diamond League, where he also broke the world record last year.

'I feel like this week I've really done a good job of getting it underneath the hole to be able to be aggressive with an uphill putt.' England's Tommy Fleetwood, who had been second overnight, slipped into a tie for fifth with a second-round 69 in Maryland. Fleetwood's compatriot Harry Hall put himself just inside the projected cut mark for the season-ending Tour Championship as a 67 left him in a share of eighth place. Only the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings will proceed to East Lake in Atlanta with Hall currently projected to climb 15 places and take the final spot in the field.

Athletics DFA Gio Urshela, recall Brett Harris from Triple-A
August 15 - The Athletics designated veteran infielder Gio Urshela for assignment prior to Friday night's game against the visiting Los Angeles Angels. The A's recalled third baseman Brett Harris from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. Urshela, 33, is batting .238 with 20 RBIs in 59 games this season, his first with the Athletics. The 10-year veteran has played with eight teams and has a .270 career average with 73 homers and 352 RBIs in 851 games. His best season was in 2019 when he established career highs of a .314 batting average, 21 homers and 74 RBIs with the New York Yankees. Harris, 27, was batting .282 with 12 homers and 39 RBIs in 59 games at Las Vegas this season. Harris played 36 games for the Athletics last season and struggled with the bat. He hit just .146 and slugged .262 in 36 games, hitting three homers and driving in 12 runs. The Athletics also claimed left-hander Jared Shuster off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. The club subsequently optioned Shuster to Las Vegas. Shuster, 27, had an 8.04 ERA in 12 games (two starts) for the White Sox this season. Mikel Arteta says new Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres learnt a lot in loan stint
Mikel Arteta believes the most transformative period in Viktor Gyokeres' development took place when the Swedish striker was barely playing at all. Arsenal summer signing Gyokeres joined Brighton in 2018, ultimately making just eight senior appearances – none in the Premier League – before he moved permanently to Coventry in summer 2021 following a succession of loan spells. The 27-year-old then blossomed over two seasons at Sporting Lisbon, scoring 97 goals in 102 appearances – a breakthrough, believes his new boss, inspired by his frustrating tenure with the Seagulls. 'That was probably the most important part of his career,' Arteta said. 'When he had to accept a different role and don't play and value other things, 'So he had to improve and evolve, and I think that's the moment where he took the platform and went to another level. That's sometimes very useful in your career at a young age.' Gyokeres helped Sporting lift back-to-back Primeira Liga trophies, a national cup, and was the league's top scorer in both campaigns. He has now made an early impression as a Gunner, scoring in their 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao. Arteta agreed Gyokeres' previous experience in England should speed up his integration. He said: 'I think it helps once you have lived in the country and experienced and understand the culture, the passion, the type of play, the demands, the intensity, the referees. 'There's a lot of things that it's good to experience before. Then he's gone away to a different league, adapted to that, been very, very prolific. 'You just look at his body language, the way he talks, the way he carries himself. He's a really confident boy, and I'm sure he will be very, very good for us.' Arteta confirmed Gyokeres, who is understood to have signed a five-year deal at the Emirates, has been on Arsenal's radar 'for a long time'. Arteta added: 'The reality as well is that you have to have an available place in the team, and now the time has come. He was available and we decided to bring him, and he decided that the best option for him was Arsenal.'
