Royal Commission for AlUla, UNESCO Launch Innovating Documentary Heritage Conference
The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), in partnership with UNESCO, launched its international conference titled 'Innovating Documentary Heritage for Sustainable Development in AlUla and Saudi Arabia,' to be held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on April 29 and 30.
The conference is held under UNESCO's 'Memory of the World' program and will host leading experts, institutions concerned with historical memory, and cultural policymakers. It will discuss ways to utilize documentary heritage in supporting education, promoting cultural dialogue, and advancing sustainable development goals in Saudi Arabia and the Arab region.
Alongside the conference, an exhibition titled 'Words on Memory: A Window into Saudi Arabia's Documentary Heritage' is being held at UNESCO headquarters from April 28 to May 2. It will showcase archival materials and historical narratives of the Kingdom, in partnership with national memory institutions, for the first time internationally.
The initiative reflects RCU's commitment to preserving AlUla's natural and cultural heritage in support of Saudi Vision 2030 and to establishing AlUla as a regional center for cultural leadership and heritage-driven development.
The conference also extends RCU's partnership with UNESCO under the 'Memory of the World' program and the Kingdoms Institute, reaffirming their joint efforts in documentary heritage preservation, capacity building, and global knowledge exchange.

Mashaer Train begins Hajj trips on Tuesday
Saudi Gazette report MINA — The Mashaer Metro Train made its first trip on Tuesday morning in preparation for the Hajj season, which begins on Wednesday when Hajj pilgrims heading to Mina to spend the Day of Tarwiyah. The train will operate 2,000 trips to transport two million pilgrims during the Hajj season. As part of its national role in serving pilgrims and in line with the Kingdom's efforts to enhance transportation systems and improve service quality during the Hajj season, the Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has announced the full operational readiness of the Mashaer Train for the Hajj season. SAR has completed its preparations in coordination with various relevant entities, particularly security and service authorities. Comprehensive operational preparation included nearly 12,000 trial trips since last January, in addition to four full-scale simulation exercises accurately replicating the conditions of the Hajj season to test the readiness of systems, trains, and stations and ensure safe and efficient operations. The Mashaer Train operates on five distinct service patterns tailored to different Hajj rituals, making it a unique transport system globally. During the Hajj season, the train is scheduled to carry out its operations with high efficiency and precise organization within those five operational patterns. SAR also conducted extensive maintenance and rigorous testing on all facilities and stations of the project to ensure their readiness and compliance with safety and quality standards. The train connects nine stations across the holy sites of Arafat, Muzdalifah, and Mina, with the final station in Mina located on the fourth level of the Jamarat Bridge, enhancing the smooth movement and safety of pilgrims. The Mashaer Train is one of the region's most remarkable sustainable transport projects. It operates a fleet of 17 trains, each with a capacity of 3,000 passengers, enabling a total transport capacity exceeding 72,000 passengers per hour. This helps reduce congestion in the holy sites, lower carbon emissions, and provide a smart, safe, and environmentally friendly travel experience. The operation of the train reflects SAR's commitment to supporting Saudi Vision 2030 by enabling a reliable, efficient, and sustainable transport experience for pilgrims, showcasing the Kingdom's advanced infrastructure and improving the quality of services provided.

Man jumps into display of China's terracotta army, damaging some: Officials
A domestic tourist climbed over a fence and jumped into a section of the world-famous display of China's Terracotta Army, damaging two ancient clay warriors, authorities said Saturday. The 30-year-old was visiting the museum housing the Terracotta Army in the city of Xi'an on Friday when he 'climbed over the guardrail and the protective net and jumped', public security officials said in a statement. The man surnamed Sun was found to 'suffer from mental illness' and the case is under investigation. He 'pushed and pulled' the clay warriors and two were 'damaged to varying degrees', the statement said. He was 'controlled' by security personnel. The pit he jumped into is up to 5.4 metres (18 feet) deep, according to the museum's website. Built around 209 BC to stand guard over the tomb of the first emperor, the 8,000-strong Terracotta Army is one of China's most important archaeological discoveries and considered a symbol of ancient Chinese artistic and military sophistication. A major tourist attraction in Xi'an, capital of the northern province of Shaanxi, it has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1987. A worker at the museum told AFP on Saturday that the display was open as usual.
