Carolina Hurricanes need to reset and refocus before Game 3 in Eastern Final

Having lost the first two games of the Eastern Conference Final on home ice — including the shocking 5-0 defeat in Game 2 — the Carolina Hurricanes are tested on Saturday night in Florida for the pivotal Game 3.
They have the players and the system to recover. But to recover, they'll have to return to what has made them successful: intelligent checking, clean structure, and aggressive forechecking.
Carolina
Hurricanes
falling behind due to defensive breakdowns and undisciplined play
Can the Hurricanes get back in the series?
All three even-strength goals Florida scored in Game 2 were avoidable. On each, the Carolina Hurricanes' defense either overextended itself or wandered out of position, and the Panthers capitalized. The Carolina Hurricanes are behind 2-0 against Florida and need to straighten out their defensive mistakes and get their forechecking identity back to prevent digging themselves into an even larger hole.
On the opening score, a turnover on Andrei Svechnikov and poor positioning on defenseman Sean Walker left Dmitry Orlov vulnerable to a three-on-one down low — a bad breakdown at this level of hockey.
Goal number two began with a Svechnikov turnover and ended with Carter Verhaeghe and Matthew Tkachuk setting up a 2-on-1 down low off a high chase by Orlov, leaving the net front unprotected.
On Sam Bennett's goal that pushed it to 4-0, Brent Burns was caught too far up the ice, with Bennett able to skate alone into the slot for a tap-in following a Verhaeghe wraparound.

The refrain? Carolina's defensemen were too aggressive at the wrong times, and as a result, layers broke down and the man-to-man system was exposed.
Florida Panthers
controlling physical tone and tempo
Florida has taken the first two games not only with execution but also with work. The Panthers were getting pucks first, were more physical (56 hits in Game 2), and more disciplined, including frustrating key Hurricanes such as Svechnikov, who took an expensive roughing penalty that resulted in another Panthers power-play goal.
The Panthers' power play is 4-for-5 in the series now. You can't give this team that many opportunities.
What must Carolina do in Game 3?
Tighten up defensively: The Hurricanes must stay within their system and avoid overpursuing pucks, especially in the high slot. They rely on a layered defense, but when one man cheats, it opens up the interior.
Reignite the forecheck: Carolina prospers when it is persistent under the dots. Florida is currently getting out of its zone too conveniently. The Canes need to pressure harder, create turnovers down low, and then go down-to-up for point shots — their bread and butter.
Develop offense off the rush: Florida tends to over-funnel on the backcheck at times. That creates room for a trailing late trailer to join the charge. If the Hurricanes can get their zone entries more timed and employ a fourth man high, they will create more quality chances in transition.
Play fast, play smart: Carolina requires more urgency and pace, but not the desperation that creates cheating. Stay true to their game, and the goals will follow.
Stay out of the box: Svechnikov, especially, needs to stay away from retaliatory punishment. He's being compensated to score goals, not fight Tkachuk's fights.
The Hurricanes have now lost 14 straight Eastern Conference Final games, a mental burden that may be growing heavier. But the right way to respond isn't to chase the game. It's to control the game—one shift at a time.

Carolina demonstrated in the previous rounds that they are capable of imposing their will when they play disciplined, quick, physical hockey. That's the prescription they need to get back to if they're going to get back into this series.

Panthers can move to the verge of winning the Stanley Cup again if they beat the Oilers in Game 4
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Leading the Stanley Cup Final 2-1, the Florida Panthers can move to the verge of a second consecutive championship if they beat the Edmonton Oilers in Game 4 at home Thursday night. The Panthers were upbeat and relaxed at their final full practice before the potential swing game, with players downplaying the gravity of the situation. 'I feel like every game's so big during this time," center Anton Lundell said Wednesday. 'The stakes gets higher. Everybody wants to win. But we both know for both teams it's a big game, and we want to be good.' They were more than good in Game 3, routing the Oilers 6-1 to take control of a series that looked evenly matched after a bunch of overtime hockey and a split in Edmonton. 'Usually you get teams' best after that, I think especially with the players they have in the room, how competitive they are, they're going to look to bounce back," said Brad Marchand, who is tied with teammate Sam Bennett for the most goals in the final with four apiece. "When you have that kind of leadership, they normally lead the way, those top guys. That's a dangerous combination. We have to make sure that we bring our best.' The Panthers are nearing full strength at a time of year usually known for players gutting through injuries, with Paul Maurice saying Sam Reinhart is back healthy and Matthew Tkachuk looks like he is rounding into form. The Oilers are missing Zach Hyman because of his playoff-ending wrist injury, and fellow top-line forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is dealing with something that is keeping him off the ice for practices and making him a game-time decision. That discrepancy could make a difference in their Cup final rematch. One thing that is the same is Florida locking in and normalizing pressure situations like this. 'Our approach, it's pretty similar the entire playoffs," said Bennett, who leads all scorers this postseason with 14 goals. "Whether it's Game 1 or Game 7, we play the same style. We play just as hard. We're not sitting back, so we really are not going to be changing anything in this next game or any other games to come.' NHL playoffs: /hub/stanley-cup and /hub/nhl

NHL insider drops big update on Sam Bennett's future with Panthers (Image via Getty) A new update about Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett has caught fans' attention. With free agency slowly approaching, there's been a lot of talk about what the Panthers will do next. Now, it seems one of the key names might be staying. NHL insider David Pagnotta has shared news that could mean something big is coming soon. Sam Bennett's contract talks with Florida Panthers show progress On June 9, 2025, hockey insider David Pagnotta reported on The Fourth Period that talks between Sam Bennett and the Florida Panthers are moving in the right direction. While nothing is final yet, it looks like both sides are working toward an agreement that would keep the forward in Florida beyond next season. — nhlrumourreport (@nhlrumourreport) After being transferred from the Calgary Flames, Sam Bennett, 28, has been with the Panthers starting in 2021. Florida's playoff runs depend greatly on his powerful two-way play and physicality. If no new agreement is signed, he becomes a possible free agent when his present contract expires following the 2024-2025 season. Pagnotta said, 'It sounds like there's been some traction on a contract extension,' which suggests that talks are serious. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? His tenacity, scoring ability, and capacity to step up in critical games were all recognized. Bennett started with his usual enthusiasm and scored some significant goals during the 2024 playoffs. The Panthers are believed to be trying to keep their top players together for another deep playoff push. According to The Fourth Period, general manager Bill Zito is leading talks and sees Bennett as a 'priority piece' in the lineup. Florida is also keeping an eye on their salary cap situation. Signing Bennett early could help the team avoid last-minute decisions or losing him to free agency. Sources say both sides are 'hopeful' that something will be done soon. No official details about contract length or salary have been shared yet. But if things go well, fans may hear confirmation before the NHL Draft or free agency period opens.

Sam Bennett's future with the Panthers hangs in the balance despite coach's sarcastic free agency warning
Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett has been on fire this postseason—scoring 14 goals and tallying 20 points in just 20 games. His red-hot form has elevated him to the NHL's top spot in playoff goals this year, helping the Panthers dominate the Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now But amid all the on-ice success, one question lingers: will Bennett remain with the Panthers next season? Paul Maurice jokes about Bennett's free agency, but is there more beneath the surface? As contract speculation continues to swirl, head coach Paul Maurice chose humor over panic. 'He's got a horrible attitude. I think he's got bubonic plague,' Maurice said in jest during Game 3. 'He's got a whole bunch of things. We're not sure he can be cured.' While these quips made headlines for their comic relief, they also hinted at something deeper—confidence. Why such light-heartedness about possibly losing a core playoff performer? According to insider James Mirtle, 'Nobody around the league expects Sam Bennett to reach free agency; he wants to stay, and the Panthers want to keep him.' That likely explains Maurice's relaxed tone and suggests that negotiations, although not finalized, are progressing behind the scenes. Contract talks ongoing, but salary cap concerns may create tension NHL insider Elliotte Friedman previously noted that Bennett and the Panthers have been discussing a potential extension since at least March. 'It's been a very good marriage between player and team,' Friedman said. However, nothing is set in stone. With multiple big names like Aaron Ekblad and Brad Marchand also due for new deals, Florida's salary cap space may only allow the team to retain two of the three stars. And that's not the only issue. Former NHLer Paul Bissonnette chimed in on X, saying, 'I find it weird though that some people… think Sam Bennett making 10 million is insane… He's leading the NHL in playoff goals.' The market may drive up Bennett's value, especially considering the shortage of top-tier centers in this year's free agent pool.
