'You Want It To Be Hard': Andrei Svechnikov Remaining Positive Despite Pressure Of Moment

It's no secret that this has been a tough series for Andrei Svechnikov. After a disappointing regular season, the talented winger came out with a purpose in the postseason and was a true difference maker through two series. Svechnikov had eight goals in 10 games (one behind Mikko Rantanen for the most through two rounds of the playoffs), three of which were game-winners, and of those, one was a series winner. He was a constant scoring threat whenever he was on the ice through the first two rounds and looked to be the player everyone has counted on him to be. While the 25-year-old has been a consistent playoff performer, there always seems to be a wall for him and right now, Florida is that wall. In three games, Svechnikov has just one assist and he's only gotten a single shot on net. He also essentially sealed the Game 2 loss on his own, with a trio of mistakes that all led to immediate goals against. "Of course you put pressure, on yourself, but you also have to try and stay positive," Svechnikov said Monday morning. "I know it hasn't gone our way, but I'm trying to work out there. You make mistakes, but it's not that I'm not trying to do the right things and try to get shots and all that stuff. I know I'm trying, it just hasn't happened." One thing that Svechnikov has always been good at though is staying positive through difficult times. It'd be easy to be down and discouraged in a moment like this: down 3-0, getting heavily outplayed, outscored, but the Russian is trying to keep up those good vibes not only for himself, but for his team too. "Yeah, obviously. I hate this time right now, but today's a new day," Svechnikov said. "Only good vibes right now and trying to think positively. Just try to go out there and have the best game you can. "We're just going to go out there and not even think about being down 3-0. Just try to stay positive and try to play our game. The first two periods, we were so close and then the third period was just a hard period for us, but for two periods we were close. Just have to go day by day and see what will happen." Hurricanes Turning Back To Number One Netminder For Game 4 The Carolina Hurricanes will be turning back to their number one goaltender tonight as they look to stave off elimination at the hands of the Florida Panthers. The Stanley Cup Playoffs aren't ever easy. It's a grueling two-month, four-round journey that only one team comes out in the end of. There's plenty of good teams and good players that never make it even close to the summit. "You want it to be hard otherwise it's not the Stanley Cup," Svechnikov said. But for the Carolina Hurricanes, the climb has been seven years in the making and they're still no closer than they were when they started it. Many say that you have to lose before you can learn how to win, but how many more years of lessons does Carolina need? "To be honest, we've been losing for seven years," Svechnikov said. "It's kind of frustrating, but to win it takes everything. It's going to be so hard. It's always going to be hard. We know it and we've been here for seven years. It doesn't get easier. Every year I actually feel like it gets harder and harder." The Hurricanes are staring down the barrel. They know that the odds are against them, but they also know that these opportunities don't come often. All they can do is as Svechnikov said: Go out there and try to play your best game. "We know it's our last step," Svechnikov said. "We're standing in a corner right now and we just have to get out from there and that's what we're going to try to do." Count On Svechnikov, Aho Powering Hurricanes To Game 4 Win Over Panthers

Carolina Hurricanes aim to avoid series sweep, snap 15-game losing streak versus Florida Panthers in Game 4 Monday The Florida Panthers are on the cusp of being in the Stanley Cup Finals for the third straight season and making it six straight years that a team from the state of Florida has made the Finals. It's a legendary run we are witnessing as this team could be a potential dynasty but the Carolina Hurricanes aren't out just yet. They currently sit down 3-0 in the series with a win on Monday being needed to prolong the series. It's been a slugfest where the Panthers have done what they do best with smothering the Canes and they haven't been able to respond. Carolina will need to bring their best effort yet to avoid a gruesome 15-game losing streak in the Conference Finals continuing. It'll be their strongest push yet and should make for must-see tv in a big game on Monday. All betting lines are from FanDuel Sportsbook and are subject to change. I do expect it to come with plenty of goals and the Cats have done everything they can to exploit the Carolina goaltenders with 16 goals through three games on Fredrick Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov. There will be goals in this one because Carolina will need them if they want to win as it's been a very slow series for everyone on the team except for Seth Jarvis, who is the only player on the roster averaging a point-per-game in this series. More NHL: To Touch or Not to Touch: Betting On If the Prince of Wales Trophy Tradition Will Carry On Hurricanes winger Andrei Svechnikov was near the league-lead in playoff goals but has since gone three games without a goal along with star centre Sebastian Aho, who has just one goal in the series and has only two multi-point games in the postseason. These two need to have big games if their team wants a chance to win especially Aho, who is expected to lead this team after recording 74 points on 79 games this season. He needs to take over a game and help lift his team in a big way. Aho and Svechnikov play on different lines which means they likely need one goal from each unit for them to get on the board. They play the most and third-most forward minutes on the team respectively and need to show for it. More NHL: Veterans First: NHL Insiders Pick Players Who Deserve Cup First From Each Contender

Carolina Hurricanes need to reset and refocus before Game 3 in Eastern Final

Carolina Hurricanes (via Getty Images) Having lost the first two games of the Eastern Conference Final on home ice — including the shocking 5-0 defeat in Game 2 — the Carolina Hurricanes are tested on Saturday night in Florida for the pivotal Game 3. They have the players and the system to recover. But to recover, they'll have to return to what has made them successful: intelligent checking, clean structure, and aggressive forechecking. Carolina Hurricanes falling behind due to defensive breakdowns and undisciplined play Can the Hurricanes get back in the series? All three even-strength goals Florida scored in Game 2 were avoidable. On each, the Carolina Hurricanes' defense either overextended itself or wandered out of position, and the Panthers capitalized. The Carolina Hurricanes are behind 2-0 against Florida and need to straighten out their defensive mistakes and get their forechecking identity back to prevent digging themselves into an even larger hole. On the opening score, a turnover on Andrei Svechnikov and poor positioning on defenseman Sean Walker left Dmitry Orlov vulnerable to a three-on-one down low — a bad breakdown at this level of hockey. Goal number two began with a Svechnikov turnover and ended with Carter Verhaeghe and Matthew Tkachuk setting up a 2-on-1 down low off a high chase by Orlov, leaving the net front unprotected. On Sam Bennett's goal that pushed it to 4-0, Brent Burns was caught too far up the ice, with Bennett able to skate alone into the slot for a tap-in following a Verhaeghe wraparound. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mannheim: GEERS sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung GEERS Undo The refrain? Carolina's defensemen were too aggressive at the wrong times, and as a result, layers broke down and the man-to-man system was exposed. Florida Panthers controlling physical tone and tempo Florida has taken the first two games not only with execution but also with work. The Panthers were getting pucks first, were more physical (56 hits in Game 2), and more disciplined, including frustrating key Hurricanes such as Svechnikov, who took an expensive roughing penalty that resulted in another Panthers power-play goal. The Panthers' power play is 4-for-5 in the series now. You can't give this team that many opportunities. What must Carolina do in Game 3? Tighten up defensively: The Hurricanes must stay within their system and avoid overpursuing pucks, especially in the high slot. They rely on a layered defense, but when one man cheats, it opens up the interior. Reignite the forecheck: Carolina prospers when it is persistent under the dots. Florida is currently getting out of its zone too conveniently. The Canes need to pressure harder, create turnovers down low, and then go down-to-up for point shots — their bread and butter. Develop offense off the rush: Florida tends to over-funnel on the backcheck at times. That creates room for a trailing late trailer to join the charge. If the Hurricanes can get their zone entries more timed and employ a fourth man high, they will create more quality chances in transition. Play fast, play smart: Carolina requires more urgency and pace, but not the desperation that creates cheating. Stay true to their game, and the goals will follow. Stay out of the box: Svechnikov, especially, needs to stay away from retaliatory punishment. He's being compensated to score goals, not fight Tkachuk's fights. The Hurricanes have now lost 14 straight Eastern Conference Final games, a mental burden that may be growing heavier. But the right way to respond isn't to chase the game. It's to control the game—one shift at a time. That's the prescription they need to get back to if they're going to get back into this series.
