James Franklin will look for linebackers in NCAA transfer portal
"I think we're in good shape but there are some concerns as well since we lost someone we did not anticipate losing," Franklin said in his postgame comments following Saturday's spring game. The comment was a reference to the surprising departure of Ta'Mere Robinson, who entered the transfer portal and committed to USC. Robinson was expected to be a contributor to the Penn State defense this season following the departure of Kobe King to the NFL (King was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings).

Penn State will return veteran team captain Dominic DeLuca and rising star Tony Rojas, who was limited this spring while recovering from an injury. Franklin also praised the development of Anthony Speca, who is entering his second season with the program with high expectations.
"As you all know, we aren't a big portal team, but we're going to address some issues," Franklin said. "If there is a linebacker out there that wants to be a part of our program and play for LBU, the most historic linebacker program in the history of college football, there's an opportunity to join the room."

Penn State has added seven players to the program from the transfer portal, including the most recent addition of former Syracuse wide receiver Trebor Pena. That includes a pair of edge rushers with Owen Wafle and Enai White, but not the focus will be on adding some more bodies at the linebacker spot before the start of the season.

"I think we have enough in the room, but getting through a season with potential injuries could be challenging," Franklin said. "We're going to look in the portal soon and see if we can find a solution."

Ross was often streaking wide open across the field, providing a reliable target for big gains. Allar hasn't had many dependable targets since taking over as a starter, and Ross could prove to be his safety valve if the two can establish chemistry. 2025 will be a disappointment if… The season will fall short of expectations if Ross fails to gain separation from defensive backs or win contested catches. He may also struggle if Allar plays conservatively and doesn't give him many deep-ball opportunities. If the two are unable to connect on explosives, it'll hurt both their numbers this season. Realistic outlook for 2025 Ross has proven his big-play ability, including against a Big Ten defense, and he'll be working with better players around him than he had at Troy. That said, Trebor Pena is expected to be Penn State's WR1, meaning Ross may not get as many targets as he did at Troy. Realistic expectations for 2025 are 45 receptions for 600 yards and around eight touchdowns. A season of raised expectations saw the bar officially raised one more time this summer for the Penn State Nittany Lions. The preseason US LBM Coaches Poll was released on Monday, and Penn State is set to start the season ranked No. 3 in the nation. Penn State received 14 first-place votes in the preseason poll. Texas takes the top spot in the preseason coaches poll with 28 first-place votes. Defending national champion Ohio State received 20 first-place votes and is ranked second in the preseason poll. Other Big Ten teams ranked in the preseason coaches poll include Oregon (no. 7), Illinois (no. 12), Michigan (no. 14), and Indiana (no. 19). Penn State returns a loaded roster this season from a team that made a run to an appearance in the Big Ten championship game and the semifinal of the College Football Playoff. Indiana Fever hopeful Caitlin Clark injury is 'blessing in disguise'
Following Indiana's fifth consecutive win, Fever head coach Stephanie White spoke on how the team has improved without the presence of Caitlin Clark and her injury absence could help them in the long run. "I mean, we've got a deep team. We've got a great mix of veterans who have been in this league and who understand the ebbs and flows and who understand that injuries are a part of it. And young players who continue to grow in their role and continue to gain confidence. "I think I said it earlier, when C was out the very first time. While we don't like it, sometimes it can be a blessing in disguise because everybody else finds themselves. And no one is afraid to make the big play offensively or defensively," White said. Clark has been absent from the floor for the past seven games as she recovers from a right groin injury suffered against the Connecticut Sun on July 15. Unlike the previous three segments of the season without Clark, the Fever have finally figured out how to consistently find the win column. "I think it's just we've got a really good group that's unselfish, that want to win, that play well together and for each other. And when one person doesn't have it, somebody else does. And I think it makes this really, really difficult to scout when that happens," White said. Although Clark will miss her eighth straight game with the right groin ailment and 18th overall this season, including the WNBA Commissioner's Cup Final, the former Hawkeye has reportedly been making significant strides in her recovery.
