Women's Euro: Beth Mead reflects on bench role in England's run to SF, says ‘I love being on the pitch'

New Delhi: England's Beth Mead reflected on her transition from being named the player of the tournament, winning the golden boot award for six goals in England's 2022 Euro-winning campaign to now serving the team with an outburst of injury from the bench in the ongoing Women's European Championship.
With the semi-final against Italy scheduled for Wednesday (IST), Mead has so far started only one of England's four games, and grabbed a goal in the 6-1 win over Wales.
"You've got to be ready to go into the moment. You've got to be ready to go into a position that you might not want to play or don't normally play in and that was what was different for me (against Sweden).
"I ended up playing in midfield as a number six and then I was a number 10 - I changed position a few times in the game and I loved it. I love being on the pitch, I love being able to do what I can do for the team, but they're the things that you have to be able to do as a player.
"You have to expect the unexpected and be willing to do what you need to do for the team and the greater good,' Mead told BBC Sport.
After conceding two early goals against Sweden, the defending champions roared back and drew thequarterfinal clash 2-2, before eventually moving past on penalties (3-2). The Lionesses have shown togetherness throughout the tournament, which Mead believes sets them apart from the others in the tournament.
"It's not easy when you know you're not starting and you're playing well or whatever but I think that's what has set us apart as a team. The togetherness, the willingness to try to make each other better, to try to make each other feel like we can figure it out.
"That's something that I've also seen as a shift of my role. I really know how important that is - from being a starter to being competitive in training - to make us better. So far I think we're doing a good job of that,' she added.

England's 'Lionesses' Joined By Thousands In Open Bus Parade After Women's Euro 2025 Triumph

England's victorious Lionesses were feted by thousands of ecstatic fans in London on Tuesday during an open-top bus parade to celebrate their dramatic Euro 2025 triumph. Sarina Wiegman's team successfully defended their European crown by beating world champions Spain on penalties in the Swiss city of Basel on Sunday, sparking an outpouring of national joy. They flew home on Monday and were immediately whisked to 10 Downing Street, the working home of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, for a reception. On Tuesday it was the turn of fans to celebrate the astonishing success of the Lionesses, who repeatedly defied the odds during their run to glory in Switzerland. Two buses emblazoned with the words "European Champions" set off from the bottom of The Mall, the road leading to Buckingham Palace, under grey skies shortly after midday. Captain Leah Williamson held the Euro 2025 trophy in the air and supporters responded with cheers and by waving their flags. The decibel count rouse as the bus crawled along the road, lined with Union flags and the St George's Cross, led by a military band. The huge crowds then swarmed down the road towards Buckingham Palace to party with the squad, with two large screens showing tournament highlights. 'Still we rise' An emotional Williamson was first to speak from a stage outside Buckingham Palace, saying she had been crying all the way down The Mall. "There's lots of ways to win a football match, and we repeatedly did it the hard way," she said. "But I think that you can see how much we care about playing for England, how much we love it. "(Victory in) 2022 was a fairytale, but this feels really hard-earned, and we're very proud of ourselves." The skipper said the team had overcome adversity, including defeat to France in their opening match: "Nasty things to deal with, and still we rise." She added: "Everything we do, obviously we do it for us and our team, but we do it for the country, and we do it for the young girls. "This job never existed 30 or 40 years ago, and we're making history every single step. Thank you so much, thank you so much for being with us. Stay with us, this story's not done yet." Wiegman told the cheering crowds that her players "showed up" when they had to before dancing on stage with Nigerian singer Burna Boy. "I had hoped for a little less chaos but they didn't keep their promise to finish things quicker," she said. "But as we always have a plan, and we try to execute that, and the players on the pitch, and we just kept having hope all the time, and belief, and they just showed up when it was really necessary and urgent." Victory in Switzerland was sweet revenge for Wiegman's team, who suffered bitter defeat against Spain in the World Cup final two years ago. The Lionesses were hosted at number 10 on Monday by Deputy Prime minister Angela Rayner and Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock while Starmer was in Scotland meeting US President Donald Trump. Rayner hailed the players as a "shining example of talent and excitement for women's football".

Who is Jayson Tatum's girlfriend? Meet singer Ella Mai, the rumored mother of NBA star's child

Ella Mai may be best known for her breakout hit 'Boo'd Up,' but over the past few years, she's also gained attention for her rumored relationship with Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum. The NBA superstar and Grammy-winning R&B singer have spent years dodging public scrutiny about their relationship. Despite their silence, their ongoing presence in each other's lives has made headlines many times over the years, from the early rumors in 2020 to Olympic sightings with their alleged child in 2024. Their romance may have unfolded mostly behind the scenes, but fans have managed to piece together a surprisingly detailed picture of their relationship. Clues, concerts, and carefully timed appearances Their connection didn't begin with a red carpet debut; it started with overlapping locations and raised eyebrows. In late 2020, viewers noticed Mai livestreaming from a space that looked a lot like Tatum's home, per People. That sparked speculation, but it wasn't the first sign. Months earlier, Tatum had reportedly flown to see Mai perform after a Celtics game. By 2022, they stopped trying to hide altogether. The pair attended Michael Rubin's White Party in the Hamptons and were later spotted at a Coney Island concert. When Tatum brought Mai to teammate Marcus Smart's wedding the next year, guests caught them singing and dancing to her own hit, 'Boo'd Up.' Clearly, she wasn't just a date—she was part of the circle. Olympic cheerleading, baby news, and matching ink Per the publication, Mai showed up courtside in 2024 for some of Tatum's biggest moments, including his NBA title win and Team USA's gold medal match in Paris. The quiet scenes of Mai holding a newborn in a video further hinted at something more personal. Later that summer, Page Six confirmed she and Tatum had welcomed a child. Though the pair didn't make an announcement, a clever Amica Insurance ad showed Tatum juggling dad duties, while a closing shot of three sneakers—adult, child, and baby—drove the message home. More recently, the couple got matching tattoos behind their ears: a tiny '3' meant to symbolize Mai's November 3rd birthday. Tatum has also been spotted with 'Deuce' and 'Dylan' written on his sneakers, possibly revealing the name of their second child.

Gautam Gambhir never went to college: Here's how far he studied

Gautam Gambhir, born on October 14, 1981, is a name that resonates far beyond cricket stadiums. A World Cup-winning batsman, a fierce IPL captain, a former Member of Parliament, and now the head coach of the Indian cricket team, Gambhir's journey is nothing short of a modern epic. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Yet, amid this illustrious career lies a lesser-known facet—his formal education ended after Class 12. He never pursued a college degree. Still, his rise is a striking testament to the power of discipline, mentorship, and single-minded pursuit of excellence. Cricketing laurels: From streets of Delhi to global glory Raised in New Delhi, Gambhir's cricketing journey began at the age of 10. Under the mentorship of Sanjay Bharadwaj and Raju Tandon at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy, and later at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, Gambhir honed a batting style marked by grit and composure. He debuted for India in ODIs in 2003 and Tests in 2004, steadily becoming a mainstay in the batting line-up. Gambhir was pivotal in India's T20 World Cup win in 2007 and played an iconic 97-run knock in the 2011 World Cup final, anchoring India's victory. Known for his consistency and mental resilience, he captained the Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, and mentored them to a third in 2024. With multiple international accolades including the ICC Test Player of the Year (2009), Padma Shri (2019), and the Arjuna Award (2008), Gambhir retired in 2018 as one of India's most respected left-handed openers. Political turn and coaching career Post-retirement, Gambhir transitioned seamlessly into politics, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019 and serving as a Member of Parliament from East Delhi until 2024. Known for his forthright views on national security and civic issues, he earned a reputation as a proactive and outspoken legislator. In July 2024, Gambhir was appointed as the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team, immediately leading them to victory in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy—an emphatic start to his three-year tenure. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Educational background: A career built without a degree What sets Gambhir apart even further is that he carved this multi-dimensional career despite not completing a college education. He studied at Modern School, New Delhi, and completed his Class 12, but chose to forgo higher studies to pursue cricket full-time. Living with his maternal grandparents and under the tutelage of his uncle-mentor Pawan Gulati, Gambhir immersed himself entirely in sport. With selectors beginning to notice him in the late 1990s, formal education naturally took a back seat. His selection in the inaugural batch of the National Cricket Academy in 2000 further solidified this path. Conclusion Gautam Gambhir's story challenges the notion that higher education is the only route to success. While academic qualifications remain vital for many careers, Gambhir's life illustrates how passion, perseverance, and timely mentorship can propel a person to national and global prominence—even without a college degree. His trajectory is not just that of a cricketer or politician—it is the saga of a man who redefined boundaries, both on the pitch and off it.
