Trade Setup June 27: Nifty eyes 26,000; bullish momentum expected to continue

Hans India4 hours ago

The Nifty 50 surged for the third consecutive session on Thursday, climbing 304 points to close at 25,549—its highest in nearly nine months. The sharp upward move marked a decisive breakout from its two-month trading range of 24,500–25,200. Analysts believe this momentum could propel the index toward 25,800–26,000 in the coming days.
Intraday dips were swiftly bought into, showing strong bullish sentiment, especially on the day of the monthly expiry. The broader market mirrored this optimism, with the Nifty Midcap 100 up 0.59% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gaining 0.42%.
Sectorally, metals, oil & gas, and financial services led the rally. Nifty Metal rose 2.3%, fueled by a drop in Brent crude to $66 per barrel and a weakening US dollar, which hit a three-year low below the 97 mark. In contrast, the media, realty, and IT sectors ended in the red.
Domestic cues also played a role. A strong start to the monsoon season—with rainfall 4% above the long-period average—lifted hopes for agri, rural, and consumer-facing sectors. Defence stocks may also stay in focus due to India's increasing manufacturing alignment with Europe and an export target of ₹50,000 crore by 2029.
Siddhartha Khemka of Motilal Oswal expects the bullish momentum to persist, backed by stable domestic indicators and a supportive global backdrop. Nagaraj Shetti of HDFC Securities noted that the breakout has opened the path for the Nifty to test 25,800–26,000 in the near term, with immediate support seen at 25,400.
Rupak De of LKP Securities echoed the positive sentiment, saying the index's breakout above consolidation signals strong optimism. With resistance seen only around 25,700–25,750, the upside may continue, barring a drop below 25,300.

Markets hit 9-month closing highs on Fed rate cut hopes, weak dollar

Domestic equities on Thursday closed at their highest levels in nine months, buoyed up by a decline in the US dollar and Treasury yields. Market traders increased bets on faster US interest rate cuts, following reports that American President Donald Trump may fast-track his nomination for the next Federal Reserve chief. Trump has been critical of the current Fed chair Jerome Powell for not pushing rate cuts. The BSE Sensex ended the day at 83,756, a gain of 1,000 points or 1.2 per cent. The Nifty 50 finished the session at 25,549, up by 304 points or 1.2 per cent. Both indices achieved their highest closing since October 1, 2024. The total market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies increased by ₹3.5 trillion to ₹457.5 trillion. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) were net sellers to the tune of ₹2,428 crore, while domestic institutional investors were net buyers worth ₹2,373 crore. Last week, the Fed decided to keep interest rates unchanged at 4.25-4.5 per cent. Consequently, the dollar index fell by 0.5 per cent to 97.23, while the 10-year US Treasury yield declined by 2 bps to 4.27 per cent. This week, the 10-year bond yield has dropped by 10 bps. In the commodities market, Brent crude was trading at $66.5 per barrel, up 0.35 per cent. However, it has declined by 13.2 per cent over the week in West Asia. 'An interest rate cut is already factored into futures and bond prices in the US, indicating a prolonged period of lower interest rates. This is generally positive for emerging markets, as foreign investors may be willing to take on slightly higher risks to earn additional returns by investing in these markets. It also aids valuations, as the expected rate of return will decrease," said U R Bhat, co-founder of Alphaniti Fintech. Bhat added that the recent ceasefire between Israel and Iran has slightly improved the global market outlook. HDFC Bank, which gained 2.2 per cent, and Reliance Industries (RIL), which rose 1.9 per cent, were the biggest contributors to the Sensex's gains. RIL's market capitalisation crossed ₹20 trillion for the first time after September 27, 2024. The market breadth was mixed, with 2,043 stocks advancing and 1,961 declining on the BSE. The Sensex is now just 2.4 per cent, and the Nifty 2.5 per cent, below their respective all-time highs. Investors are optimistic that the indices could scale new peaks on the back of strong domestic flows. 'Overall, we expect the market momentum to continue, with Nifty likely to move upwards towards its previous all-time highs. This will be driven by healthy domestic macroeconomic conditions and a supportive global environment,' said Siddhartha Khemka, head of research and wealth management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services. On a technical basis, experts said, the market is expected to continue with upward momentum. 'With no major resistance until the 25,700–25,750 zone, we expect this rally to extend by another 150-200 points on the upside. On the downside, support is seen around 25,300-25,350,' said Rupak De, senior technical analyst, LKP Securities.

Market surges 15% from April lows, edges closer to peak levels

Defying tariff and geopolitical tensions, India's equity benchmarks, the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty, have surged nearly 15% each from their early-April lows and are now approaching record highs. Extending gains for the third consecutive session on Thursday, the Sensex jumped 1,000.36 points (1.21%) to close at 83,755.87, while the Nifty50 rose 304.25 points (1.21%) to settle at 25,549.00. The Sensex now sits just 2,200 points shy of its all-time high of 85,978, and the Nifty is within 730 points of its peak (26,277). The market had nosedived between late March and early April after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a reciprocal tax on goods imported into the world's largest economy. The move stoked fears of an all-out global trade war, with retaliatory tariffs announced by China, the EU, and others. On April 7, the Sensex had plunged about 4,000 points intraday to hit a 52-week low of 71,725 and the Nifty 50 tumbled 1,150 points to hit a low of 21,744.

Stocks surge, crude oil dips as war cries fade

Indian benchmark indices rose to reclaim levels last seen nine months ago, as investors cheered lower oil prices, a weaker dollar, and strong domestic flows back home. Market experts believe the combination bodes well for the bulls in the near term at least. As a ceasefire in West Asia after 11 days of conflict took hold, markets bet that the worst of the disruption was behind. The Nifty closed 1.21% or 304.25 points higher at 25,549, while the Sensex closed 1.21% or 1,000 points up at 83,775.87. Thursday's closing was the highest since 1 October when the Nifty traded at 25,796.9 and the Sensex at 84,266.29. The gains were led by HDFC Bank , Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank and Bajaj Finance, which together accounted for almost three-fifths of the Nifty's gains. Reliance Industries' market capitalization crossed ₹20 trillion for the first time in nine months to touch ₹20.23 trillion. It stood at ₹20.65 trillion on 27 September last year, when the Nifty touched a record 26,277.35. Dollar, derivatives Thursday's rally coincided with the expiry of the June series of derivatives—each series closes on the last Thursday of a month—which saw the Nifty gain almost 3% from 24,833.6 at the May expiry to 25,549 at the June expiry. As per provisional data from NSE, FIIs net bought shares worth ₹12,692 crore on Thursday, their highest single-day purchase since 28 June 2023. What aided the rally was the fall in the dollar index—which measures the greenback against a basket of six currencies including the euro, pound and yen—to a one-year low of 97.22. A weaker dollar boosts returns from risky emerging market equities. Added to that was the cooling in Brent crude from $78.85 a barrel on 19 January at the height of the Israel-Iran conflict to $68.5 at the time of writing on Thursday. Global risk-on "Lower oil, dollar, cut in interest rates back home and rising domestic equity inflows have aligned Indian stocks with global peers, which are on a global risk-on," said Nitin Jain, CEO & CIO, Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Singapore. Interestingly, Jain said that not just mutual funds, other domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were also pumping money into Indian stock markets. In the first five months of 2025 through last Friday, net inflows of DIIs other than mutual funds, stood at $13 billion, more than the $11 billion invested in the whole of 2024. "This shows that not just MFs, but banks, insurance and pensions funds are upping the ante," he said. Cooling crude Cheaper crude benefits India, which imports 85%, or 5.5 million barrels per day, of its oil requirement. Investors turned richer by ₹3.5 trillion after Thursday's rally. Options data for the week ending 3 July indicate a 3% range for the market from 25210 to 25890, with a bias to the higher end of the range. This is supported by fear gauge India Vix falling to a three-month low of 12.59. The yearly average of the index is 15.52. A lower reading indicates confidence while a higher reading implies rising risk-off sentiment. In the past two days, global oil prices—particularly Brent—have cooled off, dropping below $70, which reflects easing geopolitical tensions, which had posed a major uncertainty for India, said Sachin Shah, executive director and fund manager at Emkay Investment Managers. With crude now below that threshold, a key risk appears to have receded, Shah added, saying that as far as geopolitical concerns go, India seems to be in a safe zone. What's next Moving ahead, earnings season, the return of global capital and further easing of crude prices will be the key triggers for Indian markets, say experts. "After three weak quarters in FY25, Q4 showed signs of stabilization. A supportive macro backdrop—driven by RBI's liquidity infusion and a deeper-than-expected rate cut—is expected to boost credit demand, which has been historically low. This sets the stage for a gradual earnings recovery," said Christy Mathai, fund manager at Quantum Mutual Fund. Also, the consensus for FY26 earnings growth of 10–11% appears achievable, especially with improving monsoons, rising rural income, and easing inflation, Mathai added. Shah from Emkay Investment Managers added that there may be a potential shift of global capital into emerging markets like India, as investors sell dollar assets and reallocate across geographies and asset classes. "So far, FII inflows remain muted, but any pickup could significantly boost sentiment," he said. Vinay Jaising, CIO and head of equity advisory at ASK Private Wealth said that FII ownership is at a 12-year low of around 16%, creating room for re-entry. Additionally, crude oil dropping below $65—well under India's $80 comfort zone—will further aid in containing inflation and managing fiscal deficits, Shah said. Strong outlook Jaising of ASK Private Wealth said the outlook for Indian equity markets remains strong going ahead. Domestic inflows, particularly from retail investors, are structurally strong and here to stay, as retail India's contribution to GDP via household savings has jumped from ₹0.4 trillion in 2014 to ₹4 trillion today equating to 1.3% of GDP—a 10x rise, Jaising said. "The rupee remains firm amid US political and debt concerns, while India's risk premium has declined. With earnings downgrades likely behind us and revisions likely ahead, the outlook seems strong," Jaising added.
