Firefly's Alpha rocket fails in space, sends Lockheed satellite falling into ocean, World News

AsiaOne30-04-2025
WASHINGTON — Firefly Aerospace's Alpha rocket suffered a technical issue on Tuesday (April 29) as it ascended into space on its sixth flight, causing a Lockheed Martin satellite it was supposed to place into orbit to crash into the Pacific Ocean.
About two minutes following liftoff from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, the engine nozzle on Alpha's upper portion broke off in space moments after it attempted to separate from the rocket's core booster as designed, "substantially reducing the engine's thrust," Firefly said.
While typical rocket mishaps trigger explosions or on-board shutdown commands, Alpha's upper rocket body fired for several minutes and ascended to 320km in altitude. But it failed to reach its intended orbit and was pulled back into the atmosphere by Earth's gravity.
"The stage and payload have now safely impacted the Pacific Ocean in a cleared zone north of Antarctica," Firefly said.
During Alpha's ascent, a company livestream of the flight showed several pieces of debris flying off the rocket. On-screen altitude and speed data disappeared moments before, earlier than usual.
With Tuesday's events, four of six Alpha flights since 2021 have failed. Firefly, which was able to achieve a breakthrough moon landing in March, is vying with a handful of similar upstarts seeking to build a launch business in a market dominated by Elon Musk's SpaceX.
The Alpha mission was the first under an agreement between Firefly and Lockheed for up to 25 flights through 2029. The satellite was self-funded by Lockheed and called LM 400 Technology Demonstrator, an effort to test technologies that Lockheed plans to sell to other customers, such as the Pentagon.
"Navigating risk and going fast are part of these self-funded demonstrations," a Lockheed spokesman said, adding that the satellite's production yielded insights that will benefit future customers.
About an hour after the launch, Firefly posted on X that a mishap put "the vehicle in a lower than planned orbit," then deleted that statement. The company said it was working with Lockheed, the US Space Force and the Federal Aviation Administration to determine the root cause of the failure.
With Alpha, Firefly hopes to fulfill demand from the US Defence Department for launching national security payloads into space, particularly under tight timelines. The company had a successful launch in 2023 in a Space Force mission to demonstrate rapid-launch capabilities.
Founded in 2014, Austin-based Firefly went bankrupt in 2017, changed ownership amid US national security concerns in 2022, ousted its CEO over an inappropriate relationship in 2024 then landed on the moon on its first try in March.

Ninja Van cuts 12% of Singapore workforce after 2 rounds of layoffs in 2024, Money News

SINGAPORE — Logistics company Ninja Van has cut about 12 per cent of its Singapore workforce, following two rounds of layoffs in 2024. A Ninja Van spokesperson said on Aug 12 that the job cuts are part of the company's long-term effort to strengthen its business model, and that these decisions were not made lightly. "By streamlining our headquarter functions, we are also aligning resources to support our critical growth areas of tech-enabled business-to-business restock and cold chain, while ensuring seamless operations across all services," the spokesperson said. Ninja Van declined to comment on the size of its current workforce in Singapore, and whether there are more layoffs to come. In the last few hours, a number of former Ninja Van employees from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia have posted on LinkedIn, saying that they are seeking a new role. A check on Ninja Van's job openings on its website showed it still has positions open for more than 10 Singapore-based roles in areas ranging from operations to service delivery. In April 2024, Ninja Van had cut 10 per cent of its tech team, a move which drew flak from the National Trades Union Congress as it happened just before May Day. In July 2024, it laid off five per cent of its Singapore workforce. At that time, there were about 450 staff based at its Singapore corporate headquarters. Andy Ang, assistant executive secretary of the Supply Chain Employees' Union (SCEU), said in a statement on Aug 12 that Ninja Van had informed the union about the layoffs in advance. Ninja Van is a non-unionised company, but some of its affected employees are members of SCEU. "All alternative options have been explored, resulting in some workers being redeployed to other suitable positions within the company," Ang said. He added that the union has engaged Ninja Van to ensure fair compensation packages were provided for affected workers. Ninja Van said the affected employees will receive a severance package, including those with less than two years of service. Medical insurance and mental health support have also been extended till Dec 31, 2025. The deadline to exercise vested employee stock options has been extended from 30 days to one year. Bloomberg reported on Aug 11 that Ninja Van is in talks to raise US$80 million (S$102.8 million) in a funding round that will halve its valuation to about US$1 billion, citing people familiar with the matter. In 2021, the company raised US$578 million in a Series E funding round, with participation from Alibaba and B Capital, the venture capital firm set up by Meta Platforms co-founder Eduardo Saverin and Raj Ganguly. That round boosted Ninja Van's valuation to well above US$1 billion and turned it into a unicorn. But securing funding in the current climate is tough with prolonged macroeconomic uncertainties. The Ninja Van spokesperson said on Aug 12 that the company has to take a long-term view to strengthen its business foundation, given the global logistics headwinds and the fierce competition it faces across South-east Asia. It currently operates in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand. [[nid:715037]] This article was first published in The Straits Times . SAN FRANCISCO - Mr Elon Musk has taken his feud against OpenAI to the App Store, accusing Apple of favouring ChatGPT in the digital shop and vowing legal action. 'Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation,' Mr Musk said in a post on his social network X on Monday, without providing evidence to back his claim. 'xAI will take immediate legal action,' he added, referencing his own artificial intelligence company. X users responded by pointing out that DeepSeek AI out of China hit the top spot in the App Store early in 2025, and Perplexity AI recently ranked number one in the App Store in India. DeepSeek and Perplexity compete with OpenAI and Musk's startup xAI. Both OpenAI and xAI released new versions of their AI assistants, ChatGPT and Grok, in the past week. App Store rankings on Aug 12 listed ChatGPT as the top free iPhone app with Grok in fifth place. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Factors going into App Store rankings include user engagement, reviews, and the number of downloads. OpenAI and Apple in June 2024 announced an alliance to enhance iPhones and other devices with ChatGPT features. ChatGPT-5 rolled out free to the nearly 700 million people who use it weekly, OpenAI said in a briefing with journalists last week. Tech industry rivals Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and xAI have been pouring billions of dollars into artificial intelligence since the blockbuster launch of the first version of ChatGPT in late 2022. Chinese startup DeepSeek shook up the AI sector early in 2025 with a model that delivers high performance using less costly chips. OpenAI in April filed counterclaims against multi-billionaire Musk, accusing its former co-founder of waging a 'relentless campaign' to damage the organisation after it achieved success without him. In legal documents filed at the time in northern California federal court, OpenAI alleged Mr Musk became hostile toward the company after abandoning it years before its breakthrough achievements with ChatGPT. The lawsuit was another round in a bitter feud between the generative AI (genAI) start-up and the world's richest man, who sued OpenAI in 2024, accusing the company of betraying its founding mission. In its countersuit, the company alleged Mr Musk 'made it his project to take down OpenAI, and to build a direct competitor that would seize the technological lead – not for humanity but for Elon Musk'. Mr Musk founded his own genAI startup, xAI, in 2023 to compete with OpenAI and the other major AI players. AFP

Indonesia's mining quota U-turn risks raising operational costs and hurting investment: analysts

[JAKARTA] Indonesia's plan to shorten the validity of mining output quotas from three years to one year could heighten regulatory uncertainty, increase operational costs and discourage long-term investment, analysts warned, even as the government said that the measure will help control supply and stabilise prices. 'Transitioning from a three-year to a one-year period will heighten regulatory uncertainty for miners,' noted Amelia Haines, commodities analyst at BMI. 'Annual quotas will require companies to engage with regulatory authorities more frequently, potentially lengthening permitting timelines and diverting resources to compliance activities.' The Indonesian government will press ahead with implementing the policy in October, despite opposition from players in the mining industry. The move would roll back a 2023 reform to the work plan and budget system, known locally as RKAB, which extended quota validity from one year to three. Miners in Indonesia must get RKAB approval to decide how much of a mineral resource they can extract over a set period. That longer cycle was intended to help miners plan production better and reduce administrative costs. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said on Monday (Aug 11) that the U-turn aims to tackle oversupply in key commodities such as coal and nickel, which have experienced significant price volatility, partly due to surging Indonesian output. A NEWSLETTER FOR YOU Friday, 8.30 am Asean Business Business insights centering on South-east Asia's fast-growing economies. Sign Up Sign Up The government believes that more frequent reviews will enable it to better align production with market demand, helping to avoid price collapses. 'Indonesia supplies 45 per cent of the world's thermal coal exports. When prices drop, there's little we can do; demand is low while supply is high. We will revise the policy without exception to maintain stability,' the minister noted. Damage control Indonesia is the world's largest producer of nickel, a key component in stainless steel and electric vehicle batteries, and more frequent quota reviews would give the government greater control over supply. As of the first half of this year, the country has produced 357.6 million tonnes of coal and 220 million tonnes of nickel ore. However nickel prices have come under pressure in recent years as a surge of Indonesian output has flooded the global market . The government has set nickel production quotas at 296.1 million tonnes for 2025 and 261.4 million tonnes for 2026, though the final approval for the 2026 quota remains uncertain. The country has also become a major supplier of coal, iron ore, and other minerals, giving it significant influence over global supply flows. However, some observers say its ability to sway prices is far more limited than officials had anticipated. Bill Sullivan, senior foreign counsel at Jakarta-based law firm Christian Teo and Partners, questioned whether shortening the RKAB period will truly enhance price stability. 'I find it impossible to see how this improves price stability for mineral products,' he said. 'It is much more likely that the government has belatedly realised it overestimated Indonesia's ability to influence world prices, and now needs to more carefully control approved production quotas to avoid putting further downward pressure on prices.' Sullivan characterised the change as 'damage control' and warned that it would reinforce the longstanding narrative of regulatory unpredictability in Indonesia. 'The shorter the period of the approval, the less certainty mining companies have as to their future production, sales, revenue and profitability,' he explained. 'That lack of certainty operates as a constraint on their ability to secure additional financing or investment.' Burden on cost While more frequent quota adjustments may give the government flexibility to respond to market fluctuations, overall increase in administrative burden could weigh on companies' earnings and raise their operational costs. BMI said that it may also reduce regulatory certainty, potentially discouraging capital investment particularly in long-term projects with substantial upfront costs. Research by Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) noted that the introduction of the one-year RKAB for the 2026 period is expected to keep tin prices volatile going forward, particularly on the Shanghai Futures Exchange. 'Investors need to closely monitor changes in international macroeconomic policies and domestic supply-demand conditions, and operate with caution,' SMM wrote in its research, published on Aug 4. Industry groups have yet to formally respond to the proposal, but mining executives had previously backed the three-year RKAB cycle, citing its benefits in reducing bureaucracy and improving long-term planning. Gita Mahyarani, acting executive director of the Indonesian Coal Mining Association, said that reverting to annual approvals would require more frequent paperwork, site inspections, and compliance reporting, all of which increase costs and divert management's focus from operations. South-east Asia's largest economy has often faced criticism from investors over its lengthy and complex bureaucracy, a challenge that prompted the previous administration under president Joko Widodo to streamline licensing procedures and make them more seamless, aiming to provide greater certainty for businesses. Nickel producers in Indonesia's Sulawesi region faced a supply crisis a few years ago and had to import additional ore from the Philippines due to delays in local permitting and production disruptions caused by severe weather. As a result, in 2023 the government decided to extend the validity of mining production plans to three years. Analysts say the new measure could have unintended consequences on supply chains. Delays or unpredictability in quota approvals could disrupt exports, undermine Indonesia's reputation as a reliable supplier, and push buyers towards competitors. The change may also make Indonesian miners less competitive compared with producers in other major coal-exporting countries that operate under more stable regulatory regimes. 'Buyers value consistency,' Haines from BMI said. 'Frequent changes to rules and approvals can make them think twice about long-term contracts.'
