WCL organisers call off India-Pakistan legends match
A highly anticipated match between Pakistan and India in the ongoing World Championship of Legends (WCL) was cancelled on Sunday due to escalating tensions between the two countries, tournament organisers confirmed.
In a statement issued in Birmingham, the WCL management expressed regret over the cancellation of the fixture, which was scheduled to take place today. While no specific reason was cited, the organisers acknowledged the disappointment caused to fans and shared details of the decision in a post on social media platform X.
'After hearing the news that the Pakistan hockey team will be coming to India this year, and seeing the recent India vs Pakistan volleyball match along with a few other fixtures between the two nations in different sports, we thought of continuing with the India vs Pakistan match at WCL, just to create some happy memories for people around the globe," the statement read.

"But maybe in the process, we ended up hurting the feelings of many and stirring emotions," the organisers added, while also apologising for 'unintentionally causing discomfort' to Indian cricket legends.
'Hence, we have decided to call off the India-Pakistan match. We sincerely apologise again for hurting sentiments and hope people will understand that all we ever wanted was to bring a few happy moments to the fans.'
Fans who purchased tickets for the match have been assured full refunds, the statement said.

According to sources, tensions escalated after an alleged demand was made to exclude former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi from the playing XI. Indian players Shikhar Dhawan and Harbhajan Singh reportedly opposed playing the match, leading to further friction. Indian media outlets also questioned the necessity of staging the match under the current geopolitical climate, prompting organisers to call it off.
The second edition of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)-sanctioned tournament, began on July 18 at Edgbaston. The Pakistan team, captained by Shahid Afridi, features former stars including Younis Khan, Sohail Tanvir, Wahab Riaz, and Kamran Akmal. The side, led by Mohammad Hafeez in their opening match, had earlier defeated England.
India Champions are led by World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh and include notable names such as Dhawan, Harbhajan, Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa, and Varun Aaron.
The rest of the tournament will continue as per schedule. Each of the six participating teams will play each other once before the top four proceed to the semi-finals on July 31, with the final set for August 2. Matches will be played across Birmingham, Northampton, Leicester, and Leeds.
However, it remains unclear what the organisers will decide if India and Pakistan are to meet again in the knockout stages.

Relations between the two countries remain strained. Following a terror attack in Pahalgam in April, tensions have flared, briefly affecting the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
India does not engage in bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan, with cricket encounters between the two sides now limited to ICC tournaments such as the World Cup and Champions Trophy.
A hybrid hosting model was introduced during this year's Champions Trophy, where India played its matches in Dubai while the rest of the tournament was held in Pakistan. A similar model is in place for the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup, with Pakistan scheduled to play all its matches in Colombo, as India and Sri Lanka co-host the event.
Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds the men's Asia Cup, tentatively scheduled for September in T20 format, as the venue for a potential India-Pakistan clash has yet to be confirmed.

Root moves to third in all-time top test run scorer charts as England close on India
MANCHESTER: Joe Root moved to third in the all-time top run scorer charts to help England close in on India's first innings total on day three of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, the hosts 332-2 at lunch on Friday, trailing the tourists by 26 runs. Root moved in behind former Australia captain Ricky Ponting in second and Indian great Sachin Tendulkar at the top of the rankings with his unbeaten 63 taking him above South African Jacques Kallis and into third spot in the rankings. Root and Ollie Pope, who cruised to his 16th Test half century alongside Root, ensured England built on their overnight total of 225-2, given to them by opening pair Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett's 166-run partnership. Root's morning was not without concern, as he survived one leg before wicket appeal before almost being run out when on 22, but he otherwise remained his customary composed self to keep England's run rate ticking over. The 34-year-old moved past his 104th score of fifty or more – only Tendulkar has more in Test cricket – as he and Pope upped the ante later in the morning session, with India struggling to even trouble the pair. Pope will return with Root after lunch on 70, the unbeaten 135-run partnership putting England in a strong position to seal victory in the fourth Test, one that would secure success in the five-match series with one Test to spare.

England make quick start after dismissing India in fourth Test
MANCHESTER: England's openers made a flying start to their first innings in the fourth Test against India on Thursday, reaching 77-0 at tea after dismissing the tourists for 358, with captain Ben Stokes taking five wickets. Zak Crawley played some trademark stylish drives to reach 33 not out, although he survived a confident lbw appeal on 26 from Mohammed Siraj after offering no stroke to the fast bowler. Ben Duckett was unbeaten on 43, with the left-hander hitting Anshul Kamboj for three fours in the debutant's first over. Kamboj and Siraj proved expensive as England scored rapidly in the first 14 overs of their reply. Earlier, India's wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant defied a severe foot injury to make a gutsy fifty. India suffer Pant setback in fourth Test against England The vice-captain had to retire hurt on 37 during Wednesday's opening day when struck a painful blow on the foot attempting an audacious reverse-sweep off a Chris Woakes yorker. The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced Thursday that Pant had been ruled out of keeping wicket in the Manchester match but said he would bat 'as per team requirements'. After Shardul Thakur fell to Stokes for 41, leaving India 314-6, Pant slowly made his way down the dressing room steps and out into the middle. The left-hander's movements were restricted but runners are no longer allowed in international cricket. The impressive Stokes next dismissed Washington Sundar for 27, caught by Woakes, and Kamboj was caught behind off the England skipper for a duck to leave India 337-8. That gave Stokes his first five-wicket haul in a Test since a career-best 6-22 against the West Indies at Lord's in 2017. The all-rounder finished with 5-72 in 24 overs, a fine return after his future as a lively medium-pacer was threatened by repeated hamstring trouble. Pant reached his half-century in 69 balls, including a pulled six off Jofra Archer despite his lack of mobility, before he was bowled by the paceman for 54. He received a generous round of applause as he walked back to the dressing room and Archer (3-73) ended the innings when Jasprit Bumrah was caught behind. India had resumed on 264-4 and, in overcast, bowler-friendly conditions, soon slumped to 266-5 as Archer struck with just his fifth ball of the day. Ravindra Jadeja, on a run of four successive fifties, had added just one to his overnight 19 when he edged a superb Archer delivery, with second slip Harry Brook holding a sharp low catch to his right. Thakur, one of three changes to the India side, made useful runs but he too fell to Stokes, although it needed a fine catch by a leaping Duckett at gully to dismiss the all-rounder. Stokes went against history by sending the tourists in to bat on Wednesday. No team winning the toss and bowling first has ever won a Test at Old Trafford. But India, 2-1 down in a five-match contest, need to make some history of their own if they are to maintain their hopes of a series victory as they have never won a Test at Old Trafford.
