Kerala should show the way in fight to protect equality, secularism, says Brinda Karat at P. Govinda Pillai centenary
She spoke at length on how neoliberalism wants to homogenise identities and depoliticise society, while the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is promoting a culture which homogenises religious belief itself, by basing people's identity on the hatred of another.
'The whole concept of citizenship is often marketised to reduce a citizen to his or her identity as a consumer. If I can relate to the market I am recognised. If I am poor or migrant worker or belonging to the labouring classes, my citizenship is airbrushed by the needs of the market. This aspect of neoliberal culture which promotes individualism, greed and depoliticises society masquerades as aspirational India. In a country beset by poverty, inequality, unemployment and by the worst kind of caste and patriarchal atrocities, what does aspirational mean? In an unequal society, aspiration leads to frustration and to ills like drug addiction and to the spread of cultures which deaden the mind and deaden reactions to social inequalities,' she said.
Cultural nationalism
Ms. Karat said that the RSS and its outfits, backed by the State, through its promotion of cultural nationalism is linking a specific religion as the core of identity.
'Those in power today want to bulldoze the multiple dimensions of culture and pluralistic Hindu beliefs into a homogenous culture the basis of which are some chosen religion texts. Why are they silent on those verses of the Manusmriti which promote casteism and subordination of women while pushing it as a foundational text? We have to boldly confront this because it is against the people of this country,' she said.
Speaking of her experience of meeting the two nuns from Kerala who were jailed in BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh after being attacked by Bajrang Dal, she said that the Dal represents the militant arm of the culture pushed by the RSS.
'The word termite also represents a culture. Muslims were called termites by the Home Minister of India. When I met Sister Preeti Mary in the Durg central jail, the only time she cried was when she said 'they called me a termite... Me, who has worked in the depressed and exploited areas where nobody goes to help for those who are leprosy inflicted',' she said.
Earlier, inaugurating the event, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan spoke on the many hats that P. Govinda Pillai wore, touching all spheres of intellectual and political life, from that of a Marxist thinker, writer and orator to an MLA in the first Kerala Assembly headed by EMS, as editor of Deshabhimani, as a writer of biographies, as the head of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation and as a cultural and media critic. He said that PG was an organic intellectual who stayed committed to the Marxist party even when he faced organisational action.
'In the context of the Sangh Parivar's increasing attacks on secularism and attempts at rewriting history, it is important to take forward the legacy of PG,' he said. The State government has allocated land in Mettukada in the capital to set up a PG Study and research centre as well as a library, which will house his private collection of over 25,000 books for the public to refer.

With polls in sight, Bengal BJP revives Durga Puja at Kolkata's EZCC after 2 yrs
The BJP in West Bengal will organise Durga Puja at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) in Kolkata this year. The 'khunti puja' (worship of the pole that marks the beginning of pandal construction) was held on Sunday, with several BJP leaders in attendance, including party state president Samik Bhattacharya, cultural cell chief Rudranil Ghosh, and former MP Rupa Ganguly. While the event is officially being organised by the 'West Bengal Cultural Manch,' its close ties to the BJP are evident, with key party figures leading the arrangements. Speaking at the khunti puja, state president Samik Bhattacharya stressed the cultural and apolitical nature of the festival and said, 'Maa Durga is inseparable from the Hindu Bengali diaspora.' He highlighted Bengal's historical tradition of communal harmony during festivals, citing examples of Muslims participating in Durga Puja. He mentioned about a 300-year-old puja in Basirhat where a Muslim family, which has been living there for generations actively participates in the puja. 'In Bengal, Muharram processions and Durga Puja immersion must take place in the same lane at the same time peacefully,' he said, invoking a message of unity. On being selected as the new president of the West Bengal BJP, Bhattacharya had made similar statements regarding Durga Puja and Muharram BJP's revival of Durga Puja at EZCC is seen as strategic outreach to tap into Bengali voters' cultural and religious sentiments ahead of 2026 polls, strategy that was last employed before the 2021 Assembly elections. This year's Puja marks a revival of a tradition that was initiated by the BJP in 2020, when the party had organised a grand puja at the EZCC, which was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The puja was held again in 2021, but enthusiasm reportedly waned after the BJP's electoral defeat. According to tradition, a puja, once started, must be performed for at least three consecutive years. Following this custom, the Durga Puja at EZCC was held for three consecutive years, concluding in 2022. It was then discontinued in 2023 and 2024, with a smaller, more subdued celebration held at Oikyatan in 2023. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. Day after heavy rain brings parts of Delhi to halt, AAP alleges ‘desilting scam' linked to ex-chief secy
A day after heavy rain brought parts of the Capital to a standstill, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday accused the BJP-led government of destroying documents to shield former chief secretary Naresh Kumar in a 'drain desilting scam'. The Delhi BJP, however, dismissed the allegations as a 'political stunt.' Citing an RTI reply, Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed Chief Secretary Dharmendra's office denied receiving his complaint on the matter, despite copies being available with the reporters and on social media. 'This is a direct criminal offence…When I wrote this letter last year, I held a press conference and posted it on social media. The BJP government is now saying they have no record of it. This is an attempt to hide corruption, shield Naresh Kumar, and destroy evidence,' Bharadwaj alleged at a press conference. The AAP leader criticised the BJP-led government for failing to resolve the Capital's waterlogging woes. 'Seven people died in one incident when a wall collapsed during rain yesterday. In another heart-wrenching case, a two-and-a-half-year-old drowned in an open sewer outside his house on Raksha Bandhan,' he said. The AAP leader said that the Delhi High Court had ordered a third-party independent audit of desilting works, but claimed the audit had not been carried out despite repeated reminders to the Chief Secretary and letters to the Union Home Ministry. 'When I filed an RTI on July 21 seeking file notings, correspondence, and directions related to my June 13, 2024 complaint, the Chief Secretary's office replied on July 29 that no such letter had been received. This is proof that documents are being destroyed,' Bharadwaj said. In response, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said that the Kejriwal government had a poor record on desilting. 'Before accusing us, Saurabh Bharadwaj should clarify whether it's not true that between 2015 and 2018, due to the Kejriwal government's failure to carry out desilting, an NGO had to approach the Delhi High Court demanding an audit,' Sachdeva said. He alleged that 'scams' in the name of desilting were committed annually between 2015 and 2024 during AAP rule, and 'under the protection' of the AAP government, involving officials from the Public Works Department, Flood Control Department, and Delhi Jal Board, along with local MLAs. Sachdeva also questioned Bharadwaj's claim about the missing letter. 'The reality of the Kejriwal government was that they would tweet about writing letters to the central government or the LG, but conveniently 'forget' to send them through official channels. Possibly, Bharadwaj did the same — because government offices do not lose letters,' he said.

Third VB train for NK welcomed in Hubballi
Hubballi: The third Vande Bharat Express train was welcomed with much fanfare at Hubballi station on Sunday evening. Many schoolchildren, train enthusiasts, and BJP workers, led by Union minister Pralhad Joshi, offered a grand welcome to the train. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Currently, the Dharwad-Bengaluru-Dharwad and Hubballi-Pune-Hubballi Vande Bharat trains are running through Hubballi station. For the section of Hubballi-Bengaluru, this is the second Vande Bharat train, and will go through districts like Haveri, Davanagere, Tumakuru. Addressing the occasion, Joshi said that Vande Bharat trains are a symbol of the country's development and these trains offer long journeys in the shortest time. "The Vande Bharat train, including its coaches and engine, is domestically manufactured. The production of these trains began in 2018, and their number has now surpassed 150, with 11 trains operating in Karnataka. Previously, train coaches and engines were imported from abroad," he noted. "Over the past 11 years, there have been revolutionary changes in the railway sector, with significant expansion of infrastructure. Currently, 30km of tracks are being laid daily. Until 2014, only about 45% of railway routes were electrified, but in the last 11 years, an additional 55% has been completed. In the state, 99% of routes have been electrified. There have been significant changes in the speed of goods train operations. Presently, the cost of freight transport in the country is around 12%, and by enhancing infrastructure such as loading, unloading, and building goods corridors, the cost is being reduced to 8%," he asserted. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now If the wildlife division grants permission for the Hubballi-Ankola railway project, it will open a gateway for development in the region. Approval has already been received for the detailed plan. Private entities have come forward to develop two ports along the coast as part of this project. Significant efforts are ongoing to initiate this project. "Land acquisition processes are hindering railway infrastructure and route planning. If these processes are expedited, significant changes can occur in the railway sector. Resolving land acquisition between Davanagere and Chitradurga and constructing the route would allow travel between Hubballi and Bengaluru in four-and-a-half hours," he mentioned. Sources in SWR said that the train inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bengaluru was given a grand welcome at many stations. "Responding to requests by the public at large, we stopped it at even halt stations like Heggere Halt near Tumakuru. Though it was not scheduled, it was stopped in Arsikere too. People offered puja and raised slogans in favour of the Railways and the PM," they added.
