Fritz banishes brain freeze to advance into ATP Toronto semis
The Californian will wait for a Wednesday semi-final opponent as Ben Shelton takes on Alex de Minaur.
Fritz admitted he was struck by brain freeze as he served for victory leading a set and 5-4.
After saving three break points he put a return into the net for 5-all as Rublev held on.
"That game was so shaky for me, we had both been holding serve easily, everything felt calm and chill," he said.
"It came out of nowhere, the pressure of that game. It was tight and my brain just turned off.
"The only thing to do is to come back and try to win the set. That's what is able to make it all feel not as bad."
Fritz did just that, closing out the win 15 minutes later in the second-set tiebreaker with a serve winner.
Fritz struck a personal-best 20 aces (for three-set matches) among his 29 winners. He now stands 6-4 over Rublev.
The American has now won 19 of his last 22 matches including reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Norris 'all good' after NFL game-stopping pre-season injury

That was the moment and the decision was the right thing to do for our football team and the Lions football team." Campbell said the team has received encouraging news regarding Norris. "We got some positive information on him, that he's at the hospital. I'll just have to leave it at that," said Campbell. "But when something like that happens, it puts things into perspective."

Lions' Norris hospitalized after scary injury, NFL pre-season game suspended
Norris was attempting a tackle on Atlanta's Nathan Carter when he appeared to take an inadvertent knee to the head. He lay motionless on the ground for several minutes and was tended by medical staff from both teams. "He's breathing, he's talking. It's good. NBA to open season with blockbuster showdowns: report
The season will tip off on October 21 and the opening night games will be aired by NBC, marking the league's return to the broadcaster for the first time in 23 years. The 2025-26 season is the first of an 11-year media rights deal for the NBA worth a reported $76 billion.
