Global uncertainties cast shadow over Malaysia's glove industry, say analysts
BIMB Securities said in a note that it foresees muted order volumes persisting for Malaysian glove makers in the upcoming quarters, with a recovery in demand expected to resume in the second half of 2025.
Despite the anticipated pickup, the research house believes customers are likely to adopt a "wait-and-see" approach in placing orders due to ongoing uncertainty surrounding the U.S. tariff environment.
It also noted that Malaysia's loss of market share among non-U.S. customers further pressures the operating performance of local glove manufacturers.
"Overall, the rubber glove industry continues to face oversupply and there is still a lack of catalysts for strong growth in the near term," it said.
Apex Securities also said in a note that it believes the near-term outlook remains challenging for Malaysian glove companies with significant exposure to U.S. markets, due to ongoing tariff uncertainties.
While the global rubber glove market is gradually recovering, with growth anticipated through 2025, the research house noted that glove players in Malaysia continue to face headwinds from soft U.S. demand, continued oversupply in non-U.S. markets, and rising domestic operating costs.
"Amid these uncertainties, most U.S. clients are adopting a cautious 'wait-and-see' approach," it said.
It anticipated flattish quarter-on-quarter earnings for Malaysian glover players in the upcoming quarter, reflecting ongoing global uncertainties and sluggish U.S. market demand.

The year-over-year growth in net revenue was primarily driven by higher incremental volumes and improved pricing across the portfolio. The increase was particularly supported by strong performance in the Company's flower portfolio, which benefited from increased demand and improved distribution. Revenues for the three and six months ended June 30, 2025 were comprised of approximately 65% (2024 – 63%) and 64% (2024 – 61%) in sales of dried flower and pre-roll Cannabis Products, with the remainder from oils and Cannabis 2.0 Product sales. For the three and six months ended June 30, 2025, approximately 75% (2024 – 78%) and 75% (2024 – 77%) of cannabis sales originated from sales to British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. Since 2024, the Company had sales in all Canadian provinces and the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Gross Profit Auxly realized a gross profit of $22.7 million and $41.4 million for the three and six months ended June 30, 2025, resulting in a 58% Gross Profit Margin for both periods, as compared to $15.9 million (55%) and $25.4 million (47%) during the same periods in 2024. Realized and unrealized fair value gains and losses reflect accounting treatments associated with Auxly Leamington cultivation activities and sales and are influenced by changes in production, sales and net realizable value assumptions. Inventory impairments during the second quarter of 2025 of $0.1 million were associated with charges related to reductions in net realizable value of dried cannabis under the Company's product specifications, a decrease of $0.3 million from the comparative period. Total Expenses Selling, general and administrative expenses ('SG&A') are comprised of wages and benefits, office and administrative, professional fees, business development, and selling expenses. SG&A expenses were $10.3 million in the second quarter of 2025, $1.0 million or 11% higher than the same period in 2024. Year-to-date expenditures of $20.0 million in 2025 were $2.1 million higher than the same period in 2024. The increase in SG&A was primarily driven by investments to support higher sales. Wages and benefits were $4.5 million for the quarter, as compared to $4.8 million during the same period in 2024. Year-to-date wages and benefits of $9.2 million were $0.1 million higher than that of the same period in 2024. Year-to-date wages and benefits increased compared to 2024 due to an increase in bonus accruals which was partially offset by cost savings from the streamlining of operations and support staff as a result of a more focused product portfolio. Office and administrative expenses were $1.2 million for the quarter, flat compared to the same period in 2024. Auxly's professional fees were $0.5 million during the second quarter of 2025, flat compared to the same period in 2024. Year-to-date expenditures of $0.9 million were $0.1 million lower than that of the same period in 2024. Professional fees incurred primarily related to accounting fees, regulatory matters, reporting issuer fees, and legal fees associated with certain corporate activities and as a result can fluctuate significantly from one period to the next. Business development expenses were $0.1 million for the six months ended June 30, 2025 as compared to $0.2 million for the same period in 2024. These expenses primarily relate to business development and travel related expenses. Selling expenses were $4.0 million and $7.1 million for the three and six months ended June 30, 2025, an increase of $1.3 million and $2.0 million from the same periods in 2024. Telenor eyeing development of sovereign, sustainable ‘AI factory' in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Telenor ASA, a major shareholder of CelcomDigi Bhd, is eyeing the development of a sovereign, sustainable 'artificial intelligence factory' (AI factory) in Malaysia – a data centre designed to deliver local compute power. Telenor Group senior vice-president and head of AI Dr Ieva Martinkenaite said the proposed facility would draw on the company's experience in Norway, where it established its first AI factory to provide compute-as-a-service within a sovereign, sustainable framework. 'We see an opportunity to work with the Malaysian government on secure, scalable AI infrastructure that benefits the country. Telcos are trusted partners in AI ecosystems, we are not just connectivity providers anymore, but technology players,' she told reporters at the release of Telenor Asia Digital Lives Decoded 2025: Building Trust in Malaysia's AI Future Report today. Martinkenaite said the AI factory could support Malaysia's cloud and data centre strategy with potential payback to the economy. 'We are also ready to contribute perspectives on training and responsible AI as a service. This is certainly also an opportunity to monetise.' He said scaling to meet this demand is not easy without the right capability and compute power. The report, now in its fourth year, surveyed 1,000 Malaysian internet users to understand how AI is reshaping digital lives. Signalling a significant behavioural shift, with 89% of Malaysian internet users saying they use AI today, up from 75% in 2024. Notably, the number of internet users who use AI for financial purposes or health and fitness has more than doubled. Today, a quarter of Malaysian internet users surveyed intentionally use AI tools multiple times a day. They are also leveraging AI to enhance their skillsets. The top competencies AI has helped improve include problem-solving (56%), data analysis (48%), research (47%) and creativity (45%). Over half (51%) of Malaysian internet users now use AI at work, up from 37% in 2024. Top applications of AI in the workplace include using it for analytics (59%), content development (52%), and customer service (45%). For those who are already using AI at work, they are 17% more likely to believe that AI will have a very positive impact on their job security and 13% more likely to believe the same for the country's economy, signalling that AI adoption helps to shape people's confidence. However, only one in three of those who use AI at work say their company has an AI strategy in place. Malaysian internet users remain optimistic about the impact that AI can have on society, especially on the education front. Trust in AI-generated content has also grown across the board, especially in education (+15%), financial advice (+25%), and health (+19%).

Stronger brand strategy, governance and cross-sector collaboration the way forward for businesses
KUALA LUMPUR: Strengthening brand narratives, embracing ethical governance and forging collaborative networks were among the key strategies put forward at the National CEO Forum 2025 today as Malaysian businesses grapple with the pressures of an evolving global economy. According to Interbrand's 2024 report, brands worldwide have lost US$200 billion (RM939 billion then) in unrealised value over the past two years due to short-term thinking and weak brand focus. Malaysia, ranked 36th in the Global Soft Power Index 2025 with a score of 46.1, now faces the risk of slipping further if it fails to sharpen its competitive edge. CTOS Data Systems chief operating officer Lee Shin Mei said brand equity today can 'rise or fall faster than ever before', making structured, data-driven brand management more essential than ever. 'In Malaysia, we are a relationship-driven nation. We tend to trust people we know without checking. But proper governance and due diligence using data are critical to ensure we are working with the right partners and protecting our employees, stakeholders and customers,' she said. Lee cautioned that entering into collaborations without background checks can expose companies to reputational and financial risks. She recommended that businesses document a step-by-step brand narrative, set clear key performance indicators and include service-level guarantees in agreements. 'Without clarity and measurable commitments, expectations will inevitably fall short. But when everything is agreed upon and documented, both sides can move forward with confidence,' she added. Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs in the Prime Minister's Office Dr Zulkifli Hasan said, 'From a dollars-and-cents perspective, the potential is massive. The Islamic banking sector alone is projected to grow from over US$4 trillion today to US$9.75 trillion by 2029. The halal industry, currently valued at US$2 trillion, is forecast to reach US$9.45 trillion by 2034,' he said. 'Islamic business is about serving both the market and the community. Mechanisms like zakat are not optional; they are integral to ensuring wealth is distributed fairly and society benefits,' he said. He emphasised that Islamic business principles are not exclusive to Muslims, but applicable to all Malaysians and international markets. KNKV Group chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zurainah Musa said, 'Collaboration is the new competition. Companies need each other to share resources and mitigate risk. Even banks collaborate with each other today because it makes it easier to access resources, share costs and achieve their objectives.' She pointed to Penang's rise as the 'Silicon Valley of the East' as a case study in collaborative growth. 'This didn't happen by chance. It happened because multinationals, SMEs and universities came together to share expertise, infrastructure and opportunities.' Muslim Insiders Business Chamber president Prof Adam Richman called on businesses regardless of size to join and actively participate in business communities. 'However big your brand is, it's not a reason to be arrogant. It's an opportunity to collaborate more,' he said. He noted that well-managed business communities allow companies to pool resources, combine supply and reduce operational burdens while increasing market reach. The forum also featured CTOS-led market intelligence briefings on Malaysian brand health, credit trends and consumer confidence outlook for 2026, as well as closed-door roundtables tackling sector-specific brand growth challenges. The forum themed 'Brand Growth and Focus 2026' and jointly organised by KNKV Group, CTOS Data Systems and the Muslim Insiders Business Chamber brought together 200 CEOs, leaders of government-linked companies and policymakers.
