Another WNBA game disrupted by sex toy thrown on court in Chicago

The Guardian4 days ago
A sex toy was thrown onto the court in the closing seconds of the Atlanta Dream's 86-65 victory over the Chicago Sky on Thursday night, the latest such incident at a WNBA game.
Sex toys also were thrown on court during games in Atlanta on 29 July Chicago on Friday and Los Angeles on Tuesday. Police said a second toy was thrown at the game in Atlanta, but it's unclear if that one reached the court.
A man was arrested Saturday in College Park, Georgia, after he was accused of throwing a sex toy onto the court during the Dream's 29 July game with the Golden State Valkyries, according to a police report. The report said he threw another sex toy during the Dream's game on Friday against the Phoenix Mercury.
He was charged with disorderly conduct, criminal trespassing, public indecency and indecent exposure.
Another man in Phoenix was arrested after police say he threw a sex toy in the crowd at a Mercury game on Tuesday. Police say the 18-year-old pulled the sex toy from his sweater pocket and threw it toward seats in front of him, striking a spectator in the back.
Police say the man was arrested on suspicion of assault, disorderly conduct and publicly displaying explicit sexual material.
The WNBA said any spectators throwing objects onto the court will face at least a one-year ban and prosecution from law enforcement.

Simone Biles visits Bears practice to support husband Jonathan Owens... days after he got into fight with his own teammate

Simone Biles was a surprise visitor at the Chicago Bears ' training camp on Monday, visiting her husband just days after he made headlines for fighting his own teammate. The Olympics icon was all smiles as she posed next to her man on the field, as he continues his preparations for the new NFL season, beginning next month. Biles captioned her post 'bring your wife to work' and the visit comes just days after Owens had an ugly scuffle with running back Roschon Johnson in a feisty practice session last week. In the snaps, posted to her 12.3million Instagram followers, the gold medalist wowed in an all-black ensemble that had fans stunned by her physique - even in retirement. 'Look at her arms! She probably has 10% body fat,' one wrote, while another claimed they were 'giving power couple energy right there.' It is unclear whether other WAGs were on the premises at the start of a new week of camp, but Biles is a regular cheerleader for her man's career, attending the majority of his games, first at Green Bay and now in Chicago. Owens' incident with Johnson last week came after Biles' husband reportedly attempted a 'late peanut punch', which sparked his teammate's frustrations and led to the ball being thrown. In response, Owens then tackled his teammate to the ground before coaches and other players stepped in to diffuse the situation. Afterwards, however, when discussing the incident with reporters, Johnson downplayed the skirmish with the Bears safety. He explained: 'That's just camp. Getting competitive, that's all it was. Like I said, it's football. When you compete at a high level, stuff like that is bound to happen'. The Bears scuffle is just the latest in training camp bust-ups between teammates, with similar instances occurring at both the Steelers and the Patriots. Meanwhile, away from the field, Owens recently made a shock family announcement with his wife, Biles. The couple, who have been married since 2023, revealed they would be transitioning to their custom-built mansion in Texas. Olympic gymnastics champion Biles shared some photos of the couple's dogs enjoying their new home back in April.

‘Just A'ja being A'ja': Aces' Wilson makes WNBA history with 30-20 double-double

A'ja Wilson scored 32 points and tied a career-high with 20 rebounds to become the first player in WNBA history with 30-plus points and at least 20 rebounds in a game as the Las Vegas Aces beat the Connecticut Sun 94-86 on Sunday night. A three-time league Most Valuable Player including last season, Wilson posted her third double-double in the last four games and third consecutive outing with at least 27 points. With 36 seconds remaining in the game, she grabbed her 20th board to match the personal record she established in July 2024 at Seattle. Her Las Vegas teammates led the home crowd in applause for the milestone. 'It's just A'ja being A'ja,' said Aces coach Becky Hammon. 'She probably could have had one of these in the past. I never let her really go to the offensive glass this year, where we've been emphasizing that more.' Las Vegas gave up 31 first-quarter points, then another 14 less than five minutes through the second period to fall behind 45-33. But they regrouped, holding Connecticut (5-25) without a point for the next 5:45 during a 12-0 run to draw the score even by halftime. The defensive tenacity carried over into the second half. Las Vegas surrendered as many points in the second and third quarters combined as they allowed in the opening period, in the process flipping the early, double-digit point deficit into a double-digit point lead by the late third. 'It's huge,' Wilson said. 'I didn't even know, as many greats as we have in this league, it's kind of a shocker that it's just now happening. It's a blessing. I love what I do. I love what I do. I love it so much, so anytime that I can come out and just play basketball the way that I love it, and the team, and we're all getting involved – I'm happy with that.' Wilson's heroics bolstered the Aces on a day when three of the five starters failed to score more than seven points. Jackie Young was the exception with 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor. Young also dished six assists to match Chelsea Gray's game-high total. Jewell Loyd and Dana Evans helped pick up some of the offensive slack with 12 and 10 points off the bench. The loss dropped Connecticut to 0-3 on their current road swing, which concludes on Monday in San Francisco against Golden State.

Lions coach Dan Campbell gives huge health update on Morice Norris after frightening head injury led to game being canceled

Detroit Lions safety Morice Norris, who was taken off the field in an ambulance late in a preseason game last week, is in concussion protocol and doing well, coach Dan Campbell said Monday. 'We're going to take it nice and easy here to make sure he's good over the next 10 to 14 days and reassess,' Campbell said. 'That's good news.' After spending Friday night in an Atlanta hospital following the exhibition game against the Falcons that ended early, Norris flew back to Detroit on Saturday and returned to the Lions' facility on Sunday. 'It was great, everybody was fired up to see him. It's a breath of fresh air,' Campbell said. 'It's hard when something like that happens and you don't know. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen guys with concussions knocked out - I've had them myself - but when you have these and then you don't know. 'You know they're breathing, but you don't know anything else. And they're gone. It's just different, it's a little different because you're trying to block that out, but it's still there.' Norris said in a social post Saturday that he was OK and thanked people for their support. He was hospitalized in stable condition late Friday after being attended to for about 20 minutes by medical personnel at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The 24-year-old Norris was hurt with 14:50 left in the game after hitting Falcons running back Nathan Carter. He hit Carter with his facemask facing the running back´s midsection and his head snapped back after assisting on the tackle. In a show of concern and unity, members of both teams held hands in a circle on the field after injury. Campbell and Atlanta coach Raheem Morris made the decision to not finish the game. 'We talked to (official) Shawn Hochuli (and he) let us know that the game is still on. We communicated with each other, we told Shawn we´ll be taking knees,' Campbell said Monday. 'He said, "I understand." And that´s the way it went. Then the game was called.' Norris, a former Fresno State standout, played in two regular-season games and one in the playoffs as a rookie in 2024 after earning a spot on the team as an undrafted free agent. He is competing for a safety roster spot with Lauren Strickland and Ian Kennelly, behind All-Pro Kerby Joseph and Pro Bowler Brian Branch. The Lions and Dolphins face off in training camp on Wednesday and Thursday before meeting in a preseason game Saturday at Ford Field.
