Court pauses NEET-UG results after students flag power cut at Chennai exam centre
The Madras High Court has ordered a pause in the declaration of the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2025 results, after some students filed a plea complaining of a power cut in one of the exam centres in Chennai.Thirteen students had filed a petition in the High Court, alleging there were disturbances caused due to the power outage at Kendriya Vidyalaya in the Avadi area. They also said that no extra time was given to the students by the invigilators to complete the exams.advertisementOne of the aggrieved students, in the plea, highlighted the lack of backup facilities such as generators or inverters at the exam centre. Due to a power outage, students were forced to write the exam under poor lighting conditions, the plea said.
The student said that heavy rain led to water entering the exam hall, further disrupting the process and forcing students to shift from their assigned seats."The power outage caused mental distress, heat exhaustion and created grossly unequal examination conditions compared to other centres," the student said in the plea.She alleged that no extra time was given to finish the exam despite all these disturbances. "This places the petitioners who wrote examination at this centre at a clear disadvantage compared to others across the country," she said.The exam was held between 3 pm to 4.15 pm on May 4, and results are expected to be declared by June 14. The Madras High Court will again hear the matter on June 2.advertisementThe petitioners contended that they were subjected to grossly unequal examination conditions compared to candidates at other centres, violating Article 14 of the Constitution. Also, rights under Article 21 (Protection of life, liberty) had also been infringed.SIMILAR ORDER BY MADHYA PRADESH HIGH COURTEarlier, the Madhya Pradesh High Court had also paused the declaration of the NEET-UG 2025 results after a student alleged that her performance was affected due to a power outage at her exam centre in Indore.The exam for admission to undergraduate courses in medicine was held on May 4, when several parts of Indore faced a power outage due to bad weather.The court has also issued a notice to the National Testing Agency (NTA), Central Government and Madhya Pradesh West Zone Electricity Distribution Company, which are among the respondents, and sought their reply within four weeks.The petition is likely to be heard next on June 30.(with inputs from PTI)Must Watch

Tight security for Bakrid celebrations
Rajamahendravaram: In view of Bakrid (Eid-ul-Adha) festival on Saturday, elaborate security arrangements have been made across the district, particularly at major mosques and Eidgahs, said District Superintendent of Police D Narasimh Kishore. Speaking after a coordination meeting with religious leaders on Friday, the SP stressed the need to uphold communal harmony and urged everyone to cooperate in maintaining law and order. Stating that special surveillance through solar-powered cameras and drones will be deployed, he assured that the police are fully prepared to ensure the festival is celebrated in a peaceful atmosphere. 'Muslims should celebrate Bakrid joyfully with their families,' he wished. Any attempt to disturb harmony through provocative speeches or objectionable posts on social media will invite strict legal action, he warned. The SP further clarified that illegal transportation of animals will not be tolerated. 'We are strictly implementing the directives of the High Court regarding cow slaughter. Any violation of these orders will lead to severe consequences,' he stated. He also mentioned that nodal officers have been instructed to promptly respond to complaints and enforce the Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act-1977, Animal Transport Rules-1978, The Animal Transport (Amendment) Rules-2001 and Slaughter House Rules-2001. Citizens are encouraged to report any information related to cow slaughter or illegal transport of cattle by calling 112. Supreme Court slaps notice on KTR over alleged Musi scam
Hyderabad: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to KT Rama Rao in the case related to the BRS leader's allegations of corruption by the Congress government to the tune of Rs 25,000 crore in Musi. A hearing was held in the Supreme Court on Friday on the petition filed by Congress leader Atram Suguna. A bench comprising Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma heard the petition. Rama Rao had previously alleged that the Congress government had committed a scam of Rs 25,000 crore in the name of Musi rejuvenation. Expressing strong objection to the allegations made by KTR, Congress leader Atram Suguna filed a complaint at the Utnur police station. The police registered a case against KTR based on the complaint of the Congress leader. KTR had earlier approached the Telangana High Court to quash the case registered against him. After hearing the arguments, the High Court gave a verdict quashing the FIR registered against KTR. However, Suguna filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the High Court verdict. The hearing on this was held on Friday and the Supreme Court issued notices to KTR asking him to reply to the petition.
