ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Those bullpen games have been quite a relief for the Texas Rangers.
With Nathan Eovaldi still on the injured list with right elbow inflammation and Tyler Mahle now dealing with shoulder stiffness, the Rangers twice in the past week have gone with bullpen games — using only relievers for the first two times this season, and winning both. Texas could have another one Sunday in the series finale against the Chicago White Sox.
The first pitcher in each of those victories hasn't allowed a hit through the first three innings, with Shawn Armstrong perfect in his three innings to open the 3-1 win over the White Sox on Friday night. Jacob Webb (4-3) has been the second pitcher both times, and he got wins with scoreless outings since the starter didn't go the required five innings to get credited with a victory. Robert Garcia finished off both for saves, and he was the seventh pitcher used against Chicago.
'Our bullpen … it's just next man-up kind of mentality down there. And it's going well,' Webb said Saturday before two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom's start on an extra day of rest. 'It's just perseverance and knowing what we have to do down there. … We're playing some good baseball right now and that's what matters.'
While deGrom's regular turn in the rotation would have been Friday, the Rangers moved him back to avoid the possibility of back-to-back bullpen games this weekend. Mahle's normal slot would be Sunday, but with the team off Monday that would give the right-hander two extra days, if he doesn't end up on the injured list before then.
Kumar Rocker (1-4, 8.87 ERA in six starts), who was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on June 5 and can't return yet to the major league roster unless it is to replace an injured player, was in the Rangers clubhouse on Saturday. When asked about Rocker's presence, manager Bruce Bochy responded, 'We may need a start.'
Bochy didn't elaborate or say who would start Sunday.
Jacob Latz started the first bullpen game at Washington last Sunday, when he didn't give up a hit until the fourth while striking out seven with 60 pitches over 3 1/3 innings. Webb then threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings, followed by Hoby Milner, Armstrong and Garcia in a 4-2 win.
Armstrong retired all nine batters he faced Friday with five strikeouts, including his last four White Sox batters. Webb then took over for two scoreless innings, before Luke Jackson, Milner, Chris Martin, Cole Winn and Garcia.
'Everybody's willing to do whatever it takes for this team to win, so it's a pretty special group to be part of. … Nobody's saying no to any role. When their name is called, they're getting the ball and they're getting the job done,' catcher Jonah Heim said. 'The starters pick up the bullpen sometimes and the bullpen picks up starters. So that's kind of the environment we want to be in, is everybody's picking up everybody and trying to win games.'

Bullpen games aren't something Bochy has done often. The Rangers were 1-6 when starting a reliever in each of the past two seasons, and now are 2-0 this year.
Bochy said his relievers have done a good job all season, even with guys being moved to different roles.
'They don't care how it gets done,' Bochy said. 'Just that it gets done and they're doing what they can to help win a ball game.'

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Cristian Chivu believes the current Inter Milan squad should be remembered for much more than its historically lopsided loss in the Champions League final. The new manager also says the Club World Cup is an opportunity to alter the narrative of Inter's current campaign while he gets a head start on next season. Chivu praised his new players Saturday during his introductory news conference with Inter Milan, which will begin Club World Cup play in Southern California on Tuesday. He also realizes that many of those players are still reeling from their 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain last month. 'Of course, there is disillusionment (over) what happened at the end of the season,' Chivu said. 'The expectations were high. But what I try to tell them is that the road, the thing that they have done, it's something special, it's something amazing. Of course, the objective is important to be reached, but we don't have to forget the journey, because the journey is very important.' Inter's loss in Munich — the largest defeat in the 70-year history of major European finals — was followed three days later by coach Simone Inzaghi's exit for a lucrative job at Saudi club Al-Hilal. But Inter's season isn't over. The first 32-team Club World Cup provides an opportunity for the 44-year-old Chivu — the longtime Inter defender who then spent six years coaching the Nerazzurri's youth teams — to begin work several games early in the top job. 'It's still the season – last season,' Chivu said with a grin. 'It's not a new season, so we are here to do our best. … I think we need to honor this competition, because this is what a team should do when you can represent your team in this kind of competition. There are only 32 teams in the world represented here, and this is a proud moment for world soccer.' Chivu spoke to the media at the team hotel for the first time since Inter's brief coaching search brought him back to the club last Monday. Inter begins Club World Cup play Tuesday against Mexico's Monterrey at the historic Rose Bowl in nearby Pasadena. Inter chose Chivu despite his lack of managerial experience. He had never been a top-level coach until last February, when he left Inter's under-19 team and took over at Parma, which avoided relegation during his 13 matches in charge of the 16th-place club in Serie A. Inter reportedly considered Como's Cesc Fabregas, Marseilles' Roberto De Zerbi and Genoa's Patric Vieira in its search, but team president Giuseppe Marotta said Chivu was a frontrunner in the race from the start. 'This wasn't a fallback,' Marotta said through a translator in Los Angeles. 'Despite what's been said, there was no confusion. We made our choice quickly, within 24 hours. There were just some bureaucratic steps to complete.' At US Open, Adam Scott turns back the clock and climbs within a shot of the lead
OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — His hair is speckled with gray. Even if he remains a fan favorite in some circles, when picks to win the U.S. Open were being made, not many included 44-year-old Adam Scott. Once third-round action at Oakmont wrapped up Saturday, though, the list of the top 10 names on the U.S. Open leaderboard was made up of two kinds of players: Those who had never won a major. And Scott, the 2013 Masters champion. On a day that brought back memories of that Sunday, 12 years ago at Augusta, one of Australia's biggest sports stars matched the day's best score with a 3-under 67. He'll enter the final round tied for second at 3 under with J.J. Spaun, a one shot behind Sam Burns, with whom Scott will play alongside Sunday in final pairing. Not bad for the man who came out of Friday's round of 70 and called it 'even-par, old-man golf.' 'It's huge, obviously,' Scott said. 'For sure I'll be nervous but I'm in a great spot. I'm happy to be one behind, not sleeping on lead and that kind of stuff.' If the only player among the top contenders who harbors memories of what it's like to close on one of golf's biggest stages can pull it off Sunday, he'll become the second-oldest winner of America's national championship, behind Hale Irwin, who was 45 when he won at Medinah in 1990. With a ball speed measured at 187 mph on the 18th tee box, and a drive that traveled 331 yards, some of this looked more like Scott back in 2014, when, partly on the strength of that Masters victory, he passed Tiger Woods to vault to No. 1 in the world ranking. Scott finished second two times last year, including at the BMW Championship in the playoffs, but has not been lighting up the PGA Tour in 2025; he doesn't have a top-10 finish this year. But, he said, things have been trending in the right direction lately. Woeful Rockies absorb 2 records for futility with 19 whiffs and worst 70-game mark in modern era
ATLANTA (AP) — Kyle Farmer just shrugged when asked about being part of a Colorado team that just made MLB history with the worst 70-game record in the modern era. 'We don't care,' Farmer said after Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves left the Rockies with a 13-57 record. The Rockies surpassed the 1932 Boston Red Sox, who were 14-56, for the worst 70-game mark since 1901. 'I mean, there's nothing we can do about it,' Farmer said. 'It is what it is. We've just got to show up tomorrow and play. There's nothing you can really say about it except that if it happens, it happens.' The Rockies made more inglorious history by setting a franchise nine-inning record with 19 strikeouts. That's a lot of futility for one team to absorb in one day. The 19 strikeouts by Braves pitchers also set an Atlanta record for a nine-inning game. Spencer Strider recorded 13 strikeouts in six innings, followed by relievers Rafael Montero and Dylan Lee, who combined for six more whiffs. The only bright spot for the Rockies was the encouraging start by rookie right-hander Chase Dollander, a native of Evans, Georgia, who allowed four runs, three earned, in six innings. The Rockies entered Saturday's schedule with 10 fewer wins than the Chicago White Sox, who have the second-worst record in the majors. Dollander said 'just having a neutral mindset' is the key to remaining positive through a season already filled with low points for the team. 'Don't ride the roller coaster,' Dollander said. 'You know, there's going to be lots of ups and downs in this game. This game is really hard. So it's just, you know, staying neutral and we just keep going.' Dollander was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2023 summer draft. Among other top young players on the team are catcher Hunter Goodman, who may return to Atlanta for the All-Star Game on July 15, and outfielders Jordan Beck and Brenton Doyle. 'You know we're going to have our time,' Dollander said. 'I mean, it's just one of those things that you kind of learn as you go. I've been very fortunate to be here for a little bit now, and I can help us going forward.'
