Shohei Ohtani's return to the mound took another step forward on Sunday when he faced live hitters for the first time since his 2023 Tommy John revision surgery on his right elbow.
Ohtani faced rookies Kim Hye-seong and Dalton Rushing, as well as team planning coach J.T. Watkins, who stood in as the third hitter, during the session, which came before a road game against the New York Mets.
According to reports out of New York, Ohtani had a pair of strikeouts and a walk. Kim doubled and grounded back to the mound.
Ohtani has not pitched in a major league game since Aug. 23, 2023, for the Los Angeles Angels when he lasted just 1⅓ innings against the Cincinnati Reds. He also missed the 2019 season as a pitcher for the Angels after he underwent his original Tommy John surgery.
In 86 career MLB starts, Ohtani is 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA. His hitting and pitching exploits helped him to earn American League MVP Awards with the Angels in 2021 and 2023. He won the National League MVP for the Dodgers last season as a designated hitter only when he hit 54 home runs with 59 stolen bases.
Originally estimated to be back on the mound this month, the Dodgers slowed down Ohtani's rehab schedule, with team president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman recently saying, the goal was to have Ohtani pitching through October.
The recovery schedule could have Ohtani pitching again around the All-Star break.

One Piece sets sail for Dodger Stadium for One Piece Night pro baseball event and giveaways
Luffy and crew return to the City of Angels this summer. Luffy and his One Piece cohorts are always ready to set sail for new adventures in places they've never been before, and this summer that spirit is guiding them to Dodger Stadium for a collaboration with Major League Baseball. When the Los Angeles Dodgers face off against the Chicago White Sox on July 3, not only will it be the eve of Independence Day, it'll also be One Piece Night. The stadium will be decked out in special decorations featuring the cast of the hit anime/manga, and there will also be a number of One Piece 'activations' set up around the venue, some of which will be distributing an exclusive One Piece Card Game card illustrated by series creator Eiichiro Oda himself. Luffy's pitch being a 'strike'-type attack is a clever bit of wordplay, and another cool design detail is the combination of his banded straw hat and the Dodgers' iconic LA-logo cap. Speaking of headwear, while giving away baseball caps at the stadium is a long-standing fan-appreciation night fixture, on One Piece Night the first 40,000 fans in attendance will receive, appropriately, straw hats with both the Dodgers and One Piece logos. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Los Angeles Dodgers (@dodgers) This marks One Piece's third sports stop in the City of Angels, following their team-ups with pro football's Los Angeles Rams in 2023 and pro basketball's Los Angeles Lakers in 2024. One Piece's affinity for the city might have something to do with it being where Toei Animation's American HQ is located (unlike the just-announced Netflix One Piece Lego sets, the sports collaborations are specifically for the anime/manga arms of the franchise). It's also hard to ignore that the presence of Shohei Ohtani on the Dodgers' roster has turned pretty much all of Japan into Dodgers supporters, so the partnership is sure to please home-country One Piece fans too. It's worth noting that the Rams and Lakers both won their One Piece games, and this season the Dodgers have had two anime-related success stories, winning games featuring Pokémon's Pikachu and the Sailor Moon theme song, so hopefully Luffy will lead them to victory too. Haliburton's last-second shot lifts Pacers over Thunder in Game 1
Indiana's Tyrese Haliburton sank the game-winning basket in the final second to give the Pacers a stunning 111-110 fightback victory over Oklahoma City in Thursday's opening game of the NBA Finals. Haliburton, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds, gave the Pacers their only lead of the game on a dramatic 21-foot jump shot with 0.3 of a second remaining to deliver a shocker after Indiana had trailed by 15 points with 9:42 remaining. "We got the stop and coach trusts us in those moments to not call a timeout, trusts me in those moments, guys trust me and just trying to make a play," Haliburton said of the last shot. "Basketball is fun, man, winning is fun," he added in an on-court interview. "That's a great win for us." With a game-closing 14-2 run, the Pacers seized a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series with game two on Sunday at Oklahoma City. Pascal Siakam led the Pacers with 19 points while reserve Obi Toppin added 17, Myles Turner had 15 and Haliburton and Andrew Nembhard each added 14. "It was a total team effort, we had so many guys chip in. Obi was huge off the bench, Myles in the fourth, Andrew Nembhard in the fourth — so many guys stepped up and just really proud of this group," Haliburton said. The finish evoked memories of the first game in the Eastern Conference finals, when a Haliburton shot at the buzzer bounced high and went in to force overtime as the Pacers stunned New York on the way to a series victory. The Pacers seek the first NBA crown in their 58-year history while the Thunder, who took a title in 1979 as Seattle, have not won a crown since moving to Oklahoma City in 2008. Indiana overcame 24 turnovers and a 38-point performance by Oklahoma City's NBA Most Valuable Player and top season scorer Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. A 12-2 run pulled Indiana within 98-94 with 6:16 remaining in the fourth quarter, with Turner and Toppin each making two three-pointers in the spurt. The Thunder, with the NBA's best regular-season record, clung to the lead as Gilgeous-Alexander made a driving layup and added two free throws for a 106-98 edge with 3:24 remaining. Aaron Nesmith and Nembhard sank back-to-back three-pointers to lift Indiana within 108-105 with 1:59 remaining and after a layup by Gilgeous-Alexander, Nembhard made two free throws and Siakam scored off a rebound to lift the Pacers within 110-109. Resilient Pacers Nesmith rebounded a Gilgeous-Alexander miss to set up Haliburton's game-winning shot. "We just had to figure out how to win in so many different ways all year," Haliburton said. "There's so many weird different ways ... we're a resilient group ... We keep believing and we stay together." Gilgeous-Alexander scored 12 points in the first quarter and the Thunder forced nine turnovers on the way to a 29-20 lead. Oklahoma City surged to a 57-45 half-time lead with 19 points from "SGA" while the Thunder, playoff leaders at forcing turnovers, got 18 from Indiana in the first half. The Pacers pulled within 85-76 entering the fourth quarter but a Jalen Williams slam dunk produced the Thunder's biggest lead at 94-79 with 9:42 remaining, setting up the intense finish. Oklahoma City lost its only prior NBA Finals appearance in 2012 to Miami while the Pacers dropped their only prior NBA Finals trip in 2000 to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Four-time NFL MVP Rodgers agrees Steelers deal
Four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers has agreed terms to join the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year deal, the club confirmed on Thursday. The 41-year-old quarterback struggled last season in a 5-12 campaign with the New York Jets, who fired coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas along the way. "We have agreed to terms with QB Aaron Rodgers on a one-year contract, pending the completion of a physical," the Steelers confirmed in a post on X, formerly Twitter. ESPN and The NFL Network reported earlier that Rodgers told the Steelers he would arrive on Friday to sign a contract and begin preparing for workouts Tuesday through Thursday of next week. The Steelers lacked a veteran signal caller after Russell Wilson was signed by the New York Giants, but in Rodgers have landed a future Hall of Fame quarterback with 62,952 career passing yards and 503 career touchdown passes. Pittsburgh will offer Rodgers a chance to face his former clubs with a season opener on Sep. 7 at the Jets and an Oct. 26 home game against the Green Bay Packers, with whom Rodgers won the 2011 Super Bowl by beating the Steelers 31-25. In a 20-year career, Rodgers won MVP honors in 2011, 2014, 2020 and 2021 with the Packers. Last season, Rodgers completed 368 of 584 passes for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.
