Richards' 2nd-half goal lifts US over Saudi Arabia 1-0 and into CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals
Richards tracked the ball as it flew into the box on a curving free kick from Sebastian Berhalter in the 62nd minute to tap the ball with his left foot past Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Nawaf Al Aquidi.
The win and the 1-1 draw between Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti in Group D's other match Thursday in Houston, clinched a knockout berth for the Americans, who improved to 42 wins, one loss and five draws in group play. The U.S. has won its group in 16 of 17 Gold Cups, and closes Group D play on Sunday against Haiti at Arlington, Texas.
U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino stuck with the same lineup that produced a 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, the first time he made no changes in consecutive matches since taking over the program last October. But playing against No. 58 Saudi Arabia, the 16th-ranked Americans showed little of the attack firepower they displayed against the No. 100 Soca Warriors.
The match saw few real chances on goal by either team. The Americans had just one shot in the first half. Richards' speed to track back to cover for Alex Freeman's mistake and block a shot kept Saudi Arabia from a 1-0 lead.
Matt Freese got his second consecutive start in goal for the U.S. and third in four matches as he appears to have displaced Matt Turner.

Phillies benefit a 3rd time on catcher's interference call, this one against Mariners
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — For the third time in less than a month, the Philadelphia Phillies were on the positive end of a catcher's interference call. In the first inning of their game Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners, J.T. Realmuto was called out on strikes on a pitch by Bryce Miller that would have ended the inning. However, Realmuto argued that his swing was interfered with by Seattle catcher Mitch Garver — who was starting behind the plate while usual catcher and MLB homer leader Cal Raleigh was in the lineup as a designated hitter. The Phillies challenged the call, and after a video review, it was determined that Garver's glove did interfere with Realmuto's bat on the swing, and Realmuto was awarded first base. Last month, when Boston was in Philadelphia, catcher Carlos Narvaez was called for inference in consecutive games, in both instances allowing a run to score, one of them to end a game in extra innings. It was the first walk-off catcher's interference since 1971. This time, there was no damage as Miller induced a fielder's choice ground out by Alec Bohm on the first pitch after the review, ending the inning with Seattle trailing 1-0 thanks to Kyle Schwarber's NL-leading 44th homer. Major League baseball set a record in 2024 for catcher's interference calls with 100, which broke the mark set a season earlier when there were 96 infractions. Canucks: Conor Garland, Team USA Olympian?
Quinn Hughes we know will get an Olympic look from USA Hockey. Whether any other of the Vancouver Canucks ' clutch of Americans might also get a look has been up in the air. At least for now, the only other Yankee Canuck with a chance for an Italian plane ticket is Conor Garland . It's a credit to Garland, who has been a consistent, steady winger for the Canucks since he arrived here in the infamous Oliver Ekman-Larsson trade in 2021. Garland was a head-turning performance for the Americans at last spring's World Championships, helping to lead his national team to their first IIHF senior men's title in 65 years. It's been a busy four years for Garland in Vancouver, one almost exclusively full of personal ascendancy. The Canucks had high hopes for him when they landed him in the trade that sent a first-round pick plus broken-down veterans Jay Beagle, Antoine Roussel and Loui Eriksson to Arizona for Ekman-Larsson and Garland. Ekman-Larsson was the headliner in that 2021 deal, a veteran defenceman who was once an underrated game manager but who was past his prime by the time he landed in Vancouver. Garland, though, has proved to be exactly as advertised. He is crafty and relentless. A true competitor, he's won over Canucks fans — and coaches too. After the trade came down in the summer of 2021, then-head coach Travis Green called me to sing Garland's praises. Yes, he was pumped about adding what management believed would be a No. 1 defenceman in OEL, but don't discount Garland, he added. He could be a real diamond in the rough. Given how the OEL era went, the bar Garland had to clear to be the better player in the deal wasn't that high. He has been far better than that. Green was gone before Garland's first Christmas in blue and green, but his successor Bruce Boudreau proved to be just as much of a fan of the Massachusetts-born winger. 'He drags us into the fight,' Boudreau crowed more than once. Boudreau's aggressive hockey suited Garland to a T, with Garland scoring 16 points in April as the Canucks chased an improbable playoff spot. They didn't make the post-season in the end, but Garland did everything he could to get them there. His energetic play carried on under Rick Tocchet , and again especially in crunch time. He had 19 points in March and April 2024, a key player down the stretch as the Canucks won their first division title in a decade. Even this past season, as the Canucks staggered from one crisis to another, as their top two centres underwhelmed, Garland was a constant. And that, surely, is a big reason why he is in consideration for Team USA in Milan. There are 24 forwards on the American list at the moment. Garland is in fierce competition to be in the final 22 skaters that the Americans can select. That he's even in consideration is an honour. The flip side to all this is the snub of Thatcher Demko and, to a lesser extent, Brock Boeser . Boeser's foot speed is surely the biggest drawback here and why he's not in the mix. You would hope that the American coaching staff recognized his skill around the net and the overall smart game he plays, but that was obviously not enough to overcome his major flaw — he's just not a speedy player. But for Demko to not even be in the mix in goal is a big statement about something the goalie hates hearing about — his durability. That remains the main question around him going into 2025-26. Can he stay healthy? Three seasons in a row, he has suffered some kind of injury that has put him on the shelf. More than anything, he needs a fresh, consistent season in the year ahead. If he can find his old groove — and if he can stay healthy, why wouldn't he? — perhaps he will draw back into consideration. After all, when healthy, he's a Vezina finalist. Right now, Seattle's Joey Daccord is listed as the fourth goalie on the USA depth chart. Surely Demko is better than Daccord? Heck, throw out last season and the only goalie in consideration who is better than Demko is Connor Hellebuyck. He is at least on par with the Bruins' Jeremy Swayman, surely also better than Dallas' Jake Oettinger. This is a reminder that Demko holds a huge key to the Canucks' upcoming season. They need him back on his game, back among the NHL elite. If he forces himself back into the Olympic conversation, that would mean things are going great for him and the Canucks. And that's what fans want, more than anything. pjohnston@

Auburn claims 4 additional ‘national championships' on its football resume
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn is claiming four additional football national titles and will call itself a nine-time champion moving forward. The Tigers, for decades, boasted titles in 1957 and 2010. They also claimed the 1913, 1983 and 1993 seasons as meeting national championship qualifications. Now, though, athletic director John Cohen is adding titles from 1910, 1914, 1958 and 2004 to the program's resume. It's laudable by some and laughable by others. 'For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program's storied history — choosing to recognize only Associated Press national championships,' Cohen told On3 for a story announcing the decision Tuesday. 'Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches and teams from Auburn's proud history. 'Our visible national championship recognitions now align with the well-established standard used by the NCAA's official record book and our peers across the nation.' The Associated Press, which began handing out its annual national championship trophy in 1936, credits Auburn with two titles: 1957 and 2010. Banners recognizing those seasons hang inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. The other titles Auburn is claiming have varying degrees of validity. For example, the Bowl Championship Series existed in 2004, and the Tigers failed to make the title game. They finished 12-0 and third in the rankings behind undefeated USC and undefeated Oklahoma.
