Mother in custody after video of 3-year-old boy allegedly smoking drugs [VIDEO]
A community uproar led to an all-night ordeal to save a young child from potential abuse.
Community activists on Tuesday night went on a crusade to rescue a three-year-old boy who was filmed allegedly inhaling narcotics through a makeshift pipe.

The activists broadcast much of their mission to find the boy's family and get assistance from police and medical professionals.
Community anti-drug activist Curt van Heerden, founder of the Institution of Grace, described how the pipe was lit before the adults encouraged the small boy to inhale.

Madlanga inquiry: How much probe into Mkhwanazi's allegations will cost
Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga's inquiry into KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police chief Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's allegations of criminal infiltration into the South African justice system is expected to cost taxpayers an estimated R147.9 million.
This was revealed to The Citizen by the department of Justice and Constitutional Development spokesperson Terence Manase on Tuesday.

'Regarding your specific inquiry, we can confirm that the department of Justice and Constitutional Development is responsible for the procurement process for services for the Commission in consultation with the Commission Chairperson and Secretary,' Manase told The Citizen.
Manase said that due to the timeframes, the department has applied for a 'deviation from standard procurement processes' with the National Treasury for the Madlanga Commission and 'is awaiting feedback.'

Half a million white South Africans have left the country in 25 years
More than half a million white South Africans have left the country in the last two decades, according to Statistics South Africa (StatsSA)'s latest Mid-Year Population Estimates report for 2025.
The data, which includes net international migration assumptions by population group, reveals that 555 497 white citizens have emigrated from South Africa between 2001 and 2026, with consistent net losses recorded every five years.

The report shows that South Africa experienced a loss of 99 574 white South Africans between 2001 and 2006, followed by 106 787 between 2006 and 2011, 111 346 between 2011 and 2016, 90 957 between 2016 and 2021, and 94 898 expected between 2021 and 2026.
By contrast, black African, coloured and Indian/Asian population groups all show net gains from international migration over the same period.

Mduduzi Mnisi walked out of the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court a free man on Wednesday after the state withdrew murder charges against him in the killing of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, a former pupil at Ikusasalethu Secondary School.
The case, which had gripped the West Johannesburg community since Fose's death, took a dramatic turn after prosecutors received new information that cast doubt on Mnisi's involvement in the crime.

A presiding magistrate confirmed that the withdrawal of charges followed the emergence of crucial evidence that was not available during Mnisi's bail application.

R446,000 cash and Toyota Fortuner forfeited to the State as driver fails to explain money's origins
Police in Limpopo searched a Toyota Fortuner driven by a Zimbabwean national on the N1 freeway and found R446,000 in a bag, which was then seized by the law enforcement authorities. Image: SAPS The High Court in Limpopo has granted a forfeiture order for a cash amount of R446,000 and a Toyota Fortuner sport utility vehicle, which were seized by police. The Hawks' asset forfeiture investigation unit and the National Prosecuting Authority's asset forfeiture unit (AFU) worked tirelessly to ensure the forfeiture of the money and the vehicle. 'This emanates from the arrest conducted by members of the South African Police Service attached to Musina in 2024. On 4 July 2024, police conducted a stop and search operation along the N1 road in Musina,' said Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks in Limpopo. During the operation, the police officers stopped the Toyota Fortuner which was driven by a foreign national. 'During a search, police found a plastic bag that contained South African bank notes underneath blankets inside the boot. Police interviewed the driver, and he failed to give a clear explanation for carrying the large amount of money inside the vehicle,' said Mmuroa. The driver was immediately arrested and the money was seized. The Hawks' asset forfeiture investigation unit was consulted for asset investigation. 'After completion of the investigations, the Hawks referred the matter to the National Prosecuting Authority's asset forfeiture unit for further handling. Following court processes, the High Court in Limpopo granted a preservation order for the Toyota Fortuner and the money in February, before the forfeiture order was granted last week. 'The cash was deposited into the criminal asset recovery account on 29 July. The forfeited Toyota Fortuner is about to be sold on auction,' said Mmuroa. Earlier this year, IOL reported that a 49-year-old man was arrested on charges of money laundering after being found in possession of about R1.2 million in cash. At the time, provincial police spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, said the arrested man had allegedly tried to bribe police officers after the money was found. 'This achievement is the result of the dedication by members deployed for Operation Vala Umgodi, and the man was nabbed on 16 March 2025 at Tonga near Komatipoort,' said Ndubane. She said police officers received a tip-off about a man who was allegedly in possession of an unlicenced firearm. 'They then responded swiftly and followed the information, and upon arrival at Tonga View, they found the owner of the house and conducted a search and it was during that time when they discovered the large sum of money hidden under the bed as well as inside the wardrobe,' said Ndubane. 'The astute members continued searching in other rooms where they further found a bag full of money. It was during the process when the man tried his luck to bribe the police officials with R50,000, but his attempts failed dismally.' Ndubane said the money amounted to R1.2 million in banknotes and coins, while there was also Mozambican currency. Witbank News reports that police intercepted the vehicle just after 18:00 at the Puma Garage. A 35-year-old man from Zimbabwe and a 19-year-old South African woman were arrested. The pair allegedly attempted to bribe the police with R15 000. In addition to being charged with possession of suspected stolen property, the suspects also now face a charge of bribery. Both are expected to appear in the Witbank Magistrate's Court tomorrow. The acting station commander of Witbank SAPS, Colonel One Thobejane, commended the swift response by members of the Middelburg Flying Squad. He emphasised that criminal activities, including attempts to corrupt law enforcement, will not be tolerated. Teens as young as 15 caught in gambling spiral
With growing access to mobile phones and internet-based betting platforms, underage gambling is becoming a mounting concern in South African schools. In response, the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) has stepped up its educational outreach to learners, warning them about the risks of illegal gambling and its potentially devastating consequences. The Witness reports that, last week, the SARGF rolled out its Taking Risks Wisely programme in schools along KZN's North Coast and South Coast. The initiative aims to educate learners about the dangers of gambling, which remains illegal for anyone under the age of 18. 'The Taking Risks Wisely initiative is designed to educate school-aged pupils and vulnerable groups about the dangers of illegal gambling and its consequences,' the foundation said. SARGF executive director Sibongile Simelane-Quntana said many pupils are introduced to gambling informally, through games like Zwepe, where coins are spun and players bet on the outcome, as well as cards, dice and even board games such as Ludo. 'There are various factors that contribute to underage gambling, which differ depending on the community. 'Peer pressure, access to illegal gambling, exposure to gambling culture, and the normalisation of risky behaviour all play a role in drawing young people into gambling activities,' said Simelane-Quntana. She added that the programme is designed to help pupils understand the legal restrictions around gambling, the risks and long-term impacts of participating in gambling at a young age, and where to turn for help or treatment if needed. Chairperson of Gamblers Anonymous, Merlin Rangasami, said the trend is worrying, with some learners beginning to gamble as early as 15 years old. He described serious consequences, including cases where children sold off valuable household items to continue gambling. 'There was an incident where a 15 year old was suspended from a school in Durban due to gambling and influencing peers, but has since returned and is being monitored. 'Some pupils meet before school to play card games. Parents must monitor what their children are doing and what apps they have. If children are given spending money, parents must track how it's used,' said Rangasami. Vee Gani, chairperson of the Parents' Association of KZN, said while gambling among learners may not yet be as widespread as other behavioural concerns, it is still a serious issue. It often begins in the community. Gambling is seen as an easy way to get money, especially when it's happening at home. It's vital for parents to instil discipline and monitor their children's activities. John Manyike, head of financial education at Old Mutual, said the rise in youth gambling is being driven by online platforms and aggressive marketing. 'Advertising fuels this trend. Losses can quickly accumulate, creating financial stress, especially in a country already facing high unemployment,' said Manyike. The SARGF said it will continue expanding its school programmes to raise awareness, equip pupils with the tools to make better decisions, and offer support to those already affected by gambling behaviour.
