MOORHEAD, Minn. (Augustana) – Augustana wrestling secured four technical falls, a pin and a decision in the final regular season dual of 2024-25, defeating MSU Moorhead 29-14 on Thursday night. The win moves the Vikings to 10-8 overall and 7-2 in conference action while the Dragons drop to 8-6 and 3-6. No. 3 Jaxson Rohman kicked things off for the Vikings at high speed, logging three first period takedowns to hold the 9-3 lead. He added to that advantage with an escape and a takedown in the second before collecting two more takedowns in the third. The domination ended in a 19-4 tech fall in 6:34 for the senior. It was No. 2 Cael Larson that struck next for Augustana, stunning with five takedowns in the first period of action. He quickly added in a reversal and another takedown in just under the first minute of the second period to end the match. He secured the 20-5 tech fall in 3:58 to put AU ahead 10-6. At 165 pounds, Peyton Handevidt found himself in a locked-tight brawl that remained scoreless through the first three minutes. He earned an escape on the opening choice of the second period and fought off any sort of attempt from his opponent to take home the gritty 1-0 decision. With Augustana down 14-13, No. 13 Cade Mueller took the mat and got an early takedown to hold the 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. He dominated in the second period with three more takedowns and an escape while adding in two takedowns and a two-point nearfall in the third. With the extra point for riding time, Mueller emerged victorious in 5:53 of action with a 22-5 tech fall at 184 pounds. No. 4 Max Ramberg continued his hot streak in convincing fashion and earned five takedowns and a four-point nearfall in the first 2:40 of the 197-pound match. The 19-4 victory became his 13th tech fall of the season, breaking the Augustana program record. In the final match of the night, Max Balow found himself behind 3-1 at the end of the first period and remained behind after a scoreless second. He fought back to tally a takedown in the third, going up 4-3, but gave up a reversal to fall behind again at 5-4. But the deficit didn't last long as Balow quickly took control and got the pin in 6:15. Budding Vikings Playmaker NaJee Thompson Issues Official Goodbye After Injury

Budding Vikings Playmaker NaJee Thompson Issues Official Goodbye After Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports. "How to make an NFL roster in seven seconds:" the masterclass Minnesota Vikings cornerback Najee Thompson put on in his first preseason game as an undrafted rookie in 2023. Advertisement The former state champion sprinter scorched downfield and snared a Seattle Seahawks punt return at the point of the catch. It was seven seconds that secured Thompson's role as Minnesota's special teams ace two years ago. He popped with several meaningful plays as a gunner several times throughout his rookie year, including a forced fumble and recovery that gave the Vikings life in an otherwise demoralizing late-season loss to the Green Bay Packers. Thompson claimed the role as special teams ace with his effort no matter the score. However, injuries ultimately ended Thompson's time in Minnesota. After missing the entire 2024 season with a knee injury, Thompson failed a team physical in April and was waived from the team. Advertisement While Thompson has reacted to the tough news before, he seemed to be holding onto some hope of a return before ultimately issuing an official farewell on June 6. Former Minnesota Vikings cornerback NaJee Thompson (11)Jamie Sabau-Imagn Images "It's surreal. Thank you all for making the first part of my dream something. I'll never forget and very grateful to have the opportunity here," he wrote. "But so long, Minnesota. Officially outta here and to the cold weather you will be the only thing not missed but on to new beginnings.' Without Thompson for the 2024 season, the Vikings deployed wide receiver Trent Sherfield for the gunner role. Sherfield signed with the Denver Broncos in the offseason, prompting the Vikings to sign former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Tavierre Thomas, who is assumed to fill a prominent role on special teams this season. There Are Multiple Trade Proposals For Kirk Cousins

There Are Multiple Trade Proposals For Kirk Cousins originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cousins signed a $180 million contract with the Falcons in 2024 and would end up struggling in his first season with the team. Now, as it stands, Cousins is linked to multiple teams around the league and could be moved real soon. Advertisement Multiple teams in both conferences have multiple trade proposals for Cousins, and all of these teams are in need of a veteran presence at quarterback. All of these teams have assets and any one of them could be the next home for Cousins. Kirk Cousins (18) celebrates after a Davis-Imagn Images Pittsburgh Steelers The Steelers need a quarterback more than any other team in the NFL, as their number one is currently Mason Rudolph. They also do not have experience outside of Rudolph on the roster, and have not been able to sign Aaron Rodgers. The proposal would send multiple draft pics, along with a swap of a Day 3 pick to the Falcons for Cousins. A sixth-round pick that can turn into a fifth rounder, depending on how much Cousins plays, and Atlanta might have to pay most of the guaranteed money owed to him. Advertisement Minnesota Vikings The Vikings had traded for Sam Howell during the draft, and he is currently the backup for J.J. McCarthy. The proposal for the Vikings would send Howell and a few day three picks to the Falcons. Vikings would pay around $12 million of the guaranteed money and help the Falcons more than most teams. The Vikings would not mind reuniting with Cousins and having a veteran presence in the locker room for McCarthy. Cleveland Browns The Browns already have four healthy quarterbacks on their roster, but none of them are screaming full-time starter. They have been linked to Cousins all off-season and that only lowered when they drafted Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Advertisement The trade proposal would send Kenny Pickett and multiple picks to Atlanta for Cousins. It all depends on how the quarterbacks show out at OTA's and training camp. These three teams could make a move at any given moment, and the Falcons could make calls all around the league. McCarthy Preparing To Deliver Brilliance In 2025 For Hungry Vikings

More Images) The Vikings have been a confident and winning team under head coach Kevin O'Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. They have had impressive winning seasons with both Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold at quarterback. The 2022 and 2024 seasons cemented O'Connell as one of the best quarterback mentors in the league. But now comes his biggest opportunity. He gets to work with J.J. McCarthy, a quarterback who has more skill, athleticism and ability than either of his two predecessors. He appears to have the kind of make-up that could make him one of the all-time greats at the position. O'Connell is in the process of preparing McCarthy for greatness. It is as if DaVinci is getting set to paint the Mona Lisa. The game's greatest quarterback whisperer is set to work with the most brilliant quarterback prospect. While the game's observers won't truly know the truth about McCarthy until he proves it on a game-by-game and year-over-year basis, he appears to have the stuff that legends are made of. Start off with the fact that he won an undisputed national championship at Michigan in 2023. That's something that no Michigan team had done since 1948. (The 1997 team had to share the national championship with Texas). There was no sharing any title when McCarthy led the Wolverines. He had the swagger and the finishing touch to lead a very talented team where it had not been in 75 years. The Vikings have never won a Super Bowl and that fact is the dark cloud that hangs over this franchise. The team was good enough to win one NFL championship (1969) and get to four Super Bowls, but none of those losses were even close. It has been 49 seasons since the last Vikings team appeared in Super Bowl XI and dropped a 32-14 decision to John Madden and the Oakland Raiders. Donovan Jackson will man the left guard spot for the Vikings. (Photo by Zach Bolinger/Icon ... More Sportswire via Getty Images) The Vikings believe they have addressed the weaknesses they had on the interior offensive line by drafting Donovan Jackson from Ohio State to play left guard and signing free agents Ryan Kelly (center) and Will Fries (right guard) from the Indianapolis Colts. This assumes that all three of these players represent improvement from the interior blockers who were overwhelmed in the regular-season finale against the Detroit Lions and the Wild Card loss to the Rams. There is a confidence that this team has what it takes to build off a 14-3 regular season and become elite. The key is the development of McCarthy. Wide receiver Justin Jefferson is arguably the best at his position in the NFL. He believes that McCarthy is taking all the steps needed to lead the Vikings to a new level. 'First of all, he understands the role that he has now. He understands that he is the starting quarterback at this moment," Jefferson said. "I feel like he kind of brings that with him to practice, knowing that he has to have that leadership. He's the captain of our team. So I feel like him being right beside me and him trying to learn as much as he needs to, I feel like just his awareness of the game and his intelligence has really grown.' The players see that McCarthy has something extra that most young players don't have before they have even stepped onto the field for a regular-season game. Defensive tackle Harrison Phillips equates McCarthy's confidence to another top NFL quarterback he played with earlier in his career. 'Man, he's got some confidence,' Phillips said. 'It reminds me of Josh Allen, when I was with him in Buffalo, coming into his own and understanding the power that he has to lead this organization. And he's doing a fantastic job.' Phillips played with the Buffalo Bills from 2018 through 2021 before moving on to the Vikings in 2022. It's way too early to make any declarations about this year's version of the Vikings. But it's not too early to say that the team's aspirations have never been higher. The team looks as good as it has in any season since the ill-fated 1998 season that saw the Vikings go 15-1 in the regular season before disaster hit in the NFC title against the Atlanta Falcons. The mentor and his prodigy will attempt to deliver a masterpiece.
