MOORHEAD, Minn. (Augustana) – Augustana wrestling secured four technical falls, a pin and a decision in the final regular season dual of 2024-25, defeating MSU Moorhead 29-14 on Thursday night. The win moves the Vikings to 10-8 overall and 7-2 in conference action while the Dragons drop to 8-6 and 3-6. No. 3 Jaxson Rohman kicked things off for the Vikings at high speed, logging three first period takedowns to hold the 9-3 lead. He added to that advantage with an escape and a takedown in the second before collecting two more takedowns in the third. The domination ended in a 19-4 tech fall in 6:34 for the senior. It was No. 2 Cael Larson that struck next for Augustana, stunning with five takedowns in the first period of action. He quickly added in a reversal and another takedown in just under the first minute of the second period to end the match. He secured the 20-5 tech fall in 3:58 to put AU ahead 10-6. At 165 pounds, Peyton Handevidt found himself in a locked-tight brawl that remained scoreless through the first three minutes. He earned an escape on the opening choice of the second period and fought off any sort of attempt from his opponent to take home the gritty 1-0 decision. With Augustana down 14-13, No. 13 Cade Mueller took the mat and got an early takedown to hold the 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. He dominated in the second period with three more takedowns and an escape while adding in two takedowns and a two-point nearfall in the third. With the extra point for riding time, Mueller emerged victorious in 5:53 of action with a 22-5 tech fall at 184 pounds. No. 4 Max Ramberg continued his hot streak in convincing fashion and earned five takedowns and a four-point nearfall in the first 2:40 of the 197-pound match. The 19-4 victory became his 13th tech fall of the season, breaking the Augustana program record. In the final match of the night, Max Balow found himself behind 3-1 at the end of the first period and remained behind after a scoreless second. He fought back to tally a takedown in the third, going up 4-3, but gave up a reversal to fall behind again at 5-4. But the deficit didn't last long as Balow quickly took control and got the pin in 6:15. Seahawks Already Expected to Dump Sam Darnold for Explosive Replacement

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Seattle Seahawks may have found their quarterback of the future this offseason, signing Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract in free agency. The deal followed Darnold's breakout campaign with the Minnesota Vikings in which he threw for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 66.2 percent of his passes and registering a 102.5 passer rating. That was enough to get Darnold a Pro Bowl appearance. More news: Insider Reveals Bad News for 49ers' Critical Defender What a turnaround it was for the No. 3 overall pick, who wasted away on the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers for the first five seasons of his career and then served as a backup with the San Francisco 49ers for one year before joining the Vikings. That being said, Darnold still has his fair share of doubters, especially after a rather rough showing in Minnesota's Wild Card Round playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams. ESPN's Seth Walder clearly does not think all that highly of Darnold and is expecting the Seahawks to have a different player under center as soon as 2027. As a matter of fact, Walder is predicting Seattle to even make it all the way to the Super Bowl that season ... sans Darnold. Photo by"Led by second-year star quarterback LaNorris Sellers, along with a top-five defense, the Seahawks will reach the Super Bowl ... but will lose," Walder wrote. "The days of [Geno] Smith and Darnold will be ancient history by 2027." Sellers is expected to be one of the top quarterbacks off the board in the 2026 NFL Draft. The University of South Carolina star threw for 2,534 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 65.6 percent of his passes in 2024. He also rushed for 674 yards and seven scores, so unlike the more traditional Darnold, Sellers is a serious dual threat. Many feel that Darnold was merely a product of Justin Jefferson in Minnesota, not to mention the fact that he had weapons like Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson and Aaron Jones at his disposal last season. More news: Saints Could Cut Ties With Former Chiefs Super Bowl Champion We're about to find out if Darnold is for real in a few weeks. That being said, the USC product does have some solid playmakers available to him in Seattle, most notably in the form of wide receivers Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp. Rookie receivers Tory Horton and Ricky White III could be sleepers, as well. But does Darnold have enough support around him to replicate his 2024 campaign? Or is he doomed to failure in the Pacific Northwest? If it's the latter, perhaps Sellers really will be on his way to the Seahawks sooner than we think. For more on the Seahawks and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

Minnesota Vikings Defends 2 Male Cheerleaders From NFL Fan Backlash

Originally appeared on E! Online The Minnesota Vikings are tackling some online criticism. Five days after the NFL team's cheer squad announced the addition of two male cheerleaders, Blaize Shiek and Louie Conn, the organization addressed an uproar from haters who didn't necessarily agree with the pair's addition. "While many fans may be seeing male cheerleaders for the first time at Vikings games,' the football team said in a statement to NBC News Aug. 14, 'male cheerleaders have been part of previous Vikings teams and have long been associated with collegiate and professional cheerleading." The team added, 'We support all of our cheerleaders and are proud of the role they play as ambassadors of the organization.' In response to claims that spectators would be canceling their season tickets due to the male cheerleaders, the Vikings told NBC News that no fans have done so. The Minnesota Vikings showcased the upcoming 2025 season's new cheer squad on Aug. 9 with an Instagram video that prominently featured Conn in the beginning. Vikings' Kevin O'Connell gives honest assessment of J.J. McCarthy

Vikings' Kevin O'Connell gives honest assessment of J.J. McCarthy originally appeared on The Sporting News J.J. McCarthy does have pressure entering his first season as the Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback. After making the playoffs last season under Sam Darnold, McCarthy needs to carry the baton for a team built to win. Nonetheless, the 22-year-old is barely getting his feet wet after missing all last season due to a torn meniscus in his right knee. Ahead of the 2025 NFL season, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell shared the latest regarding his young signal-caller in training camp. "He's in a really good spot right now from the standpoint we're trying to build a plan that goes beyond the first regular season game," O'Connell told The Athletic's Senior NFL Insider Dianna Russini on the latest episode of "Scoop City." "We want to get him ready to go. We want to get him prepared. My job is to prepare the whole football team, and those two things can be going on at the same time, but maybe not necessarily be in the same place at the same time." MORE:Vikings' J.J. McCarthy receives intriguing message from T.J. Hockenson While McCarthy still has a lot to learn as a starting quarterback and it's a process, O'Connell stated that he's content with where the University of Michigan product is heading into the Vikings' second preseason game. "J.J. is in a good spot right now," O'Connell added. "We just got to keep working. It's details, it's discipline. It's a lot of boring things." Recently, tight end T.J. Hockenson had encouraging words for the young quarterback as the veterans on the squad are behind him as McCarthy goes through growing pains and learning lessons that all young players go through in their NFL careers. Still, McCarthy is displaying positive signs to garner this feedback from the Vikings' head coach and teammates. It will be interesting to see how he hits the ground running for Minnesota to ensure they get off to a good start and push for the NFC North division title.
