BBC announces cast for What It Feels Like For A Girl
The BBC has announced the cast and released first-look pictures for What It Feels Like For A Girl, its forthcoming Y2K spin on a coming-of-age drama, inspired by the acclaimed memoir of the same name by the award-winning writer and journalist Paris Lees.
Produced by Hera Pictures (Mary & George, Temple, Hamnet) for BBC iPlayer and BBC Three, in association with ITV Studios, the eight-part series stars Ellis Howard (Catherine the Great, Red Rose) as Byron, with Hannah Walters (A Thousand Blows, Boiling Point, Time, This is England), Laura Haddock (The Recruit, The Capture) and Michael Socha (Showtrial, This is England). Also joining the cast are Laquarn Lewis (Jamie Johnson), Hannah Jones, Adam Ali (Waterloo Road), Alex Thomas-Smith (Too Much), Calam Lynch (Sweetpea, Miss Austen, Bridgerton), Jake Dunn (Renegade Nell), and Dickie Beau (Bohemian Rhapsody).
What It Feels Like For A Girl was filmed in South Wales and Nottingham.
What It Feels Like For A Girl is a raw, heartbreaking and hilarious drama that explores escape, self-discovery and self-destruction. It's a new millennium and there's a whole world to explore. But teenager Byron (Ellis Howard) is stuck in a small working-class town that hasn't been the same since the coal mine shut down in the 80s. Byron needs to get away and doesn't care how.
Life explodes in a rush when Byron escapes to Nottingham's vibrant underworld, discovering a realm of drink, drugs, and a chaotic family of troublemakers – 'The Fallen Divas'. Byron finds a gang of kindred spirits in the mesmerising Lady Die (Laquarn Lewis), Sticky Nikki (Alex Thomas-Smith), Dirty Damian (Adam Ali), while an intense rivalry brews between Byron and the beautiful, acid-tongued Sasha (Hannah Jones).
Between them, they beg, steal and skank their way on a rollercoaster ride of hedonism at the heart of the UK's early 2000s club scene. The party can't last forever though, and when Byron is seduced by bad-boy Liam, a shocking encounter occurs that will change life forever. Calam Lynch is Max, Jake Dunn is Liam and Dickie Beau is Peter.
Further cast includes Emma Shipp (Rivals), Sekou Diaby (Boarders), Laura Checkley (Screw), Oliver Huntingdon (Sherwood), Lorn Macdonald (Bridgerton), and Rhys Connah (Happy Valley), with guest appearances from Fay Ripley (Cold Feet) and Selina Mosinski (aka Charity Shop Sue).
Paris Lees says: 'This is a proudly working-class story, and it needed a cast who could bring it to life authentically. We've struck gold with these highly talented actors, some of whom are already familiar faces - and some who are about to be. The biggest challenge was always the lead role – we're following someone who's going from, in the eyes of the outside world, a schoolboy, right up to a trans woman starting university, and all that's in between. The moment I saw Ellis, I recognised something in him - a cheekiness, a delicateness, a complexity - and knew he was the one. And he rose to the challenge, again and again. The chemistry between El, Hannah, Laquarn and the rest of the Fallen Divas is something you can only dream of in drama.'

Paris Lees is the creator and lead writer of What It Feels Like For A Girl, and Brian Welsh (Beats, Black Mirror) is lead director. Ng Choon Ping (Femme) and Marie Kristiansen (Delete Me) also direct. Executive producers are Paris Lees and Brian Welsh, Liza Marshall and Ron O'Berst for Hera Pictures, and Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC. Frances du Pille (The Sixth Commandment, The Outlaws) is producer. Paris Lees is lead writer on the series, joined by Georgia Christou, Paul Williams, Sarah Simmonds and Mika Onyx Johnson.
What It Feels Like For A Girl will arrive on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three later this year. ITV Studios will handle international distribution.

"Being slightly off the M1 in Munchkinland, with Ari singing a beautiful mezzo soprano, and then seeing cars pulling up on the hard shoulder trying to record it, and then seeing men in the sky, (which) turned out to be microlights and drones, it was like Independence Day," he told British GQ. He added: "I remember having four hours to learn how to do a dance move. I did it with Ari, headbutted her, and was like, 'Gotta go!'. "I think she might have even headbutted me, but it was a meeting of minds, literally." Wicked's next instalment will arrive in cinemas in the UK and Ireland from November 21 and will cover the years after Elphaba, played by Erivo, parted ways with her friend Glinda (Grande). Article continues below Wicked: For Good will also show Elphaba being demonised by those in Oz, and transformed into The Wicked Witch Of The West. The films have been adapted from the musical, which was based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel – which was in turn inspired by the story first told in L Frank Baum's 1900 children's novel, later adapted into the 1939 film starring Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale. Bailey said: "It's darker, and I've got a sense it's going to go there politically as well. "Fiyero's arc really kicks off and he literally is transformed by the end." Other stars of Wicked include Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and US actor Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard. Both Bailey and Goldblum are part of the Jurassic Park franchise. Goldblum played Dr Ian Malcolm in the original 1993 adventure/sci-fi while Bailey stars as Dr Henry Loomis in Jurassic World: Rebirth, which is yet to be released. "We'll see how it goes, but there might be a few films down the line where me and him can appear in Jurassic together," Bailey said. He added: "Dr Ian Malcolm and Dr Henry Loomis on a night out." CORONATION Street's Eileen Grimshaw has bid farewell to Weatherfield to embark on a new adventure. Actress Sue Cleaver has played the feisty, but down to earth Eileen since 2000, but it has come time for her to say goodbye to the cobbles. 4 4 4 On Friday's episode, Eileen makes the life-changing decision to head to Thailand with son Jason (Ryan Thomas) and invest in his bar there. Eileen bids farewell in emotional scenes and after ending her relationship with undertaker George and admitting she only loved him as "dear friend." She also made the decision to make a fresh start in Thailand after being worn down by being suspected in her sister Julie's tragic death. In Friday's episode, Eileen's mind is turned to leaving the cobbles after hearing Theo's impassioned speech to his daughter Millie. Theo explains to his teenage daughter, that he can't return to live with her mum, his ex, because "it didn't feel right," after realising he was attracted to men and wanted to see where is his relationship with Todd went. George realised how Theo's speech moved Eileen and went to confront her after she'd been at the police who had just cleared her of any wrongdoing in Julie's death. "What happens now?" she says to George after she tells him that she does not love him in a romantic sense. George tells her: "You enjoy Thailand. I'm stopping here." Before finally leaving for good, Eileen stops by the Rovers Return for one last drink and is surprised with a big showing by her friends. Steve and Tim have organised a special send off from the Streetcars drivers, complete with ribbons on the cars. "Never knowingly understated, lads," Eileen tells the men with a smile. "Won't be the same without you," Tim tells her. Steve adds: "You know what, it's only just hit me that this has been one of the most important relationships of my life," promising he would come to visit her in Thailand. Her son Todd assures her before she leaves: "You deserve this mum." Even George stops by for a farewell, giving Eileen a gift of a neck pillow for the long flight and the pair promise to stay in touch. Edinburgh's Filmhouse almost closed for good back in October 2022 after its parent charity, Centre for the Moving Image, collapsed. The beloved cinema first opened in 1978 in a repurposed church, but was feared to have been lost for good when it closed. Several Hollywood stars from across the globe backed the three-year campaign as they helped fight to save it. This includes Scottish icons such as Mary Queen of Scots star Jack Lowden, director Charlotte Wells, Love Actually actress Emma Thompson, Emmy award-winning actor Dougray Scott and Succession star Brian Cox. The Filmhouse cinema, located on Lothian Road, has undergone a huge £2 million refurbishment and is now set to reopen on Friday, June 27. The revamp has seen a complete internal refit to all of its public areas and screens, and "substantial" repairs made to the roof and stonework. After months of hard work, the incredible team at Filmhouse have managed to pull one of Scotland's few truly independent cinemas back fae the brink Jack Lowden It also saw more seats added, meaning the cinema now has a capacity for 350 super-comfy seats which each has extra legroom. The foyer space and the bar have also been renovated, and there is now room for 100 people to dine and enjoy food and drinks from a new menu that focuses on sustainable produce from the UK. A second phase of works is set to be carried out next month, which will see a fourth screen added to the venue. This newest screen will be used primarily for "private screenings", according to BBC Scotland News, and will have 24 seats. He said: "Filmhouse is a place utterly dedicated to the promotion and celebration of independent cinema. "Films need to be watched, not just made. Now, after months of hard work, the incredible team at Filmhouse have managed to pull one of Scotland's few truly independent cinemas back fae the brink. "To have such a place on the streets of our capital providing the platform to give our world-class film-makers and storytellers the lift-off they need, and continue to ask the big questions of ourselves through cinema, is exciting and vital." Andrew Simpson, executive director of Filmhouse, added that the cinema is now returning with a "fresh energy and clear plan". He said: "The love for Filmhouse never went away, it was just waiting to be reignited. "The incredible response to its closure showed us how vital this space is, not just for Edinburgh, but for audiences across Scotland and beyond. LONG TIME COMING PLANS to reopen the cinema first began to take shape when bosses signed a new lease in July last year. Caledonian Heritable, who own the building, agreed the lease it back as a space for a modern cinema for a minimum of 25 years. Works quickly began seven months later after the team managed to secure extra funding. This included £324,000 from the Open the Doors crowdfunding campaign, £1.5million from the UK government. The team also managed to secure £977,925 in donations from Screen Scotland and £1,243,312 from Creative Scotland over the next three years. Refurbishment works started in February early this year, and a second phase is set to finish the project off in July. "We are returning with fresh energy, a clear plan for the future and a commitment to delivering world-class film experiences for everyone. "Filmhouse belongs to its community and we're excited to welcome people back." While Margaret Graham, culture and communities convener at Edinburgh City Council, praised the reopening at "wonderful" for the city. She added: "I am sure that many people across Edinburgh and beyond will be looking forward to this event. "This much-loved cinema is both a community hub and cultural asset for the city. "Its refurbishment will allow even more people to enjoy the magic of global cinema in the heart of the city."
