Eredivisie End of Season Review: Almere City FC

Yahoo26-05-2025
Finish position: 18th
Overview:
Almere City suffered relegation this season, bringing to an end a two year stay in the Eredivisie. The side from just outside of Amsterdam had looked doomed for some time and with just four wins in 34 games they were by far the worst team in the league this season. With just 23 goals scored this season, it isn't hard to see where the problem lied for the team. Coupled with 64 goals shipped at the other end, the second worse in the Eredivisie this season, no fan of the side can be too surprised at this outcome. Alex Pastoor left the side as head coach in the summer, being replaced by Hedwiges Maduro. The former Ajax man won just one of his 16 games in charge before being replaced by Jereon Rijsdijk, who managed to double that with two wins in 17 games.

Almere City had been unable to replace Peer Koopmeiners, who returned to AZ last summer, while last seasons top scorer Thomas Robinet only managed two goals in 33 games this campaign compared to 12 in 36 last season. Another big loss was Yoann Cathline, who spent this year on loan at Utrecht from Lorient. For Almere he had been good for six goals and four assists, numbers he has matched this year with Utrecht.
Player of the season: Thom Haye
After such a difficult season, it is hard to find one individual who stood out for the side. According to FotMob, the sides best player this season was midfielder Thom Haye. The 30-year-old joined from SC Heerenveen in the summer following a strong campaign. While he failed to score this year, he did manage two assists. With better strikers in front of him, this could have been more, as the former AZ man created more chances than 95% of players in his position. Haye is out of contract this summer so will be hoping of remaining in the Eredivisie.
Young player of the season: Junior Kadile
Like the player of the season, finding a young player of the season for Almere City was also difficult. In truth, the side have not used many players under the age of 23. Only Junior Kadile and Jochem Ritmeester van de Kamp have made any meaningful contribution to the side this season. Kadile, a summer transfer from French side Laval, just about edges it thanks to five goals and two assists in 31 games. The 22-year-old had the best season of his young career. The forward, who can play out wide or upfront, was also strong in the air, winning 94% more aerial duals than players in his position. He also attempted more shots than 98% of his counterparts, so improving on his conversion may be something to work on this summer.

Summer needs:
If Almere City want to make a return to the top flight they will need to strengthen at both ends of the pitch. Robinet still has a contract until 2027 and could use a season in the second tier to rediscover his scoring touch. Many of the sides defenders are out of contract this summer, which could be a good thing. The club can focus on retooling at the back to put together a side that can keep them in games and give them a shot at promotion. FC Volendam and Excelsior both managed instant returns to the top flight, so Almere City should take a leaf out of both their books.

PSG Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma Announces He's Leaving the Club

Paris SG PSG Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma Announces He's Leaving the Club Published Aug. 12, 2025 6:13 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Just hours after being left out of Paris Saint-Germain's squad for Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup final against Tottenham, star goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma posted a message saying he is leaving the club. When PSG named its squad for the match earlier on Tuesday, goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who recently joined from Lille for just over 40 million euros ($46 million), was included along with backup goalies Matvei Safonov and Renato Marin. Chevalier's arrival was expected to signal Donnarumma's departure, with the 26-year-old Italy international unlikely to accept being No. 2 if coach Luis Enrique decided so. Donnarumma then posted a message in Italian, English and French on his Instagram account saying he had effectively been forced out. "Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success," he wrote. "I am disappointed and disheartened." He bade farewell to fans ahead of the new season. "I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done," Donnarumma said. "I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights and of you, who made me feel at home." ADVERTISEMENT Donnarumma did not name the person who no longer wants him in the squad, but in a pre-match news conference PSG coach Luis Enrique explained why he had signed Chevalier. "These are always difficult decisions to make, I know. I can only say good things about Gigio (Gianluigi). He's one of the best players in his position, without a doubt, and he's even better as a person," Luis Enrique said. "We were looking for a different type of goalkeeper. And I repeat, it's always difficult to make a decision like that." It is thought that Chevalier's superior passing from the back— which has been a noticeable shortcoming for Donnarumma — was a crucial factor in the decision. However, Donnarumma was arguably the best goalkeeper in Europe last season, playing a key role in PSG's Champions League success with inspired shot-stopping in the knockout stages. He also starred for Italy when it won the European Championship in 2021. But with one year left on his contract, Donnarumma had refused to sign a new contract and PSG was unlikely to let him leave for free at the end of the season. He has been strongly linked with a move to Premier League big-spender Manchester City, with Manchester United also reportedly interested. PSG experienced the same situation two seasons ago with Kylian Mbappe, who ended up joining Real Madrid on a free transfer after refusing to take up the option of a one-year contract extension. Donnarumma was in a similar position to Chevalier when he joined the club after helping Italy win the Euros. He replaced Keylor Navas as No. 1, even though Navas had been outstanding for PSG the previous season. Donnarumma's arrival at PSG was seen by fans as hugely unfair on Navas and a clumsy move by the club. Now the situation has come full circle for the Italy keeper, who finds himself in much the same position as Navas was. "If he has to go, then we thank him from the bottom of our hearts," PSG captain Marquinhos said. "He has been a great leader all these years. Seeing Donnarumma leave would upset me." PSG begins its league campaign at Nantes on Aug. 17. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Former Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin makes his next move, this time to Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Allan Saint-Maximin's wide-ranging career is taking him to Mexico. The former Newcastle winger signed a contract with Club America, the top-tier Mexican team said Tuesday. The 28-year-old Saint-Maximin arrives in the Liga MX after a one-year stint with Turkey's Fenerbahce where he played on loan from Saudi Arabia's Al Ahli. America, the winningest club in Mexico with 16 league titles, did not disclose further details about the contract. Local media reported a two-year deal worth around $10 million. Saint-Maximin is the second French player to play for Club America. Jeremy Menez, who won the Apertura 2018 championship with the club, was the first. The most successful French player in Mexican league history is Andre-Pierre Gignac, who has won five league titles with the UANL Tigres and scored 209 goals in all competitions since arriving in Mexico in 2015. Saint-Maximin, a former France youth international, debuted with Saint-Etienne in his home country, moved to Monaco and Nice, and in 2019 to Newcastle in the Premier League, where he spent four seasons.

Drew Brees praises the Kansas City Chiefs' consistency of success in the AFC

This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees about his partnership with Jimmy John's, creating his personalized sandwich, The Brees #9, and he praises the Kansas City Chiefs' ongoing success in the AFC. "We love Jimmy John's so much. In college, we would go to the store, like at the very end of the night, when they were closing, to get all the French bread that was still available; otherwise, it would just go to waste, because they cook it fresh every day." said Brees, "We would take that home, and then we would, you know, do all kinds of different stuff. We make sandwiches with it or even go with butter, cinnamon, sugar, and toast like we would, because the bread was so dang good. But that's been a fan of Jimmy John's for a long time." Kansas City has won nine consecutive division titles, the second-longest streak of division championships in league history. Only the New England Patriots, who won 11 successive AFC East titles from 2009 to 2019, had a longer streak in NFL history. Brees weighed in on the key to their remarkable run in recent years. "Tons of respect to the Chiefs, because they have the bullseye on their chest. No matter who they play or where they go, they always have the bullseye on their chest. And yet they find ways to win. It's a ton of credit to Andy Reid and (Patrick) Mahomes, that whole crew, and just the mindset they've created," said Brees. "I think at some point, even look at Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Brady and the (New England) Patriots kind of had the best of the (Indianapolis) Colts for a long time, and then finally, the Colts got over the hump with him, and he felt like he turned the tide a little bit, maybe just from a confidence perspective. But yeah, let's not forget (Joe) Burrow and the (Cincinnati) Bengals. Those are the best. The team that seems like they always play the Chiefs as tough as anybody. They've gotten ahead of their number a few times. So yeah, the AFC is pretty stout." Fans can order The Brees #9, Drew's personal Jimmy John's go-to order, for the first time. Available for a limited time through August 31st, the order supports Jimmy John's Foundation, benefiting Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Brees Dream Foundation.
