Pocan, Van Orden trade insults on camera: ‘Are you drinking right now?'

The Hill17 hours ago
Reps. Mark Pocan (D-Wisc.) and Derrick Van Orden (R-Wisc.) bickered on camera Wednesday during a Spectrum News interview.
Pocan was discussing cuts to public broadcasting when Van Orden pulled up in his Harley-Davidson, revving the engine and interrupting the interview, according to the video shared by the outlet.
'Hey Derrick, classy as always, man. We love it. Thank you,' Pocan said after his colleague pulled up.
'Have you lost your mind? You know, people read this stuff,' Van Orden said, referring to the lawmaker's comments on the Republican spending package.
'I saw your drunken tweet at 1:30 in the morning last night,' Pocan shot back.
The recent feud between the two started with a post on the social platform X on Wednesday morning.
'Wisconsin is getting $1,000,000,000 a year plus up to Medicade per year. If any Wisconsinite loses coverage it will be due to incompetence, mismanagement, and malice by @GovEvers,' Van Orden wrote.
'Seek mental health counseling,' he added.
The message was written in a quote tweet of Pocan's post from New York cartoonist Paul Noth with an image and line that read, 'You no longer have Medicaid, so you have a big beautiful bill.'
Democrats have been decrying the millions of Medicaid removals slated to come following the budget reconciliation.
The tension seeped over into the Wednesday spat between Wisconsin lawmakers on air.
'Derrick, why don't you debate me? Why are you so afraid to debate anyone? Here, we can do this in the media. Why don't you want to debate the big, beautiful bill?' Pocan said.
'So, Mark Pocan has never had a job his entire life other than politics, and he doesn't understand,' Van Orden said.
'I've owned a small business for 37 years. Tony, you've owned a small business; that's a little work, isn't it?' Pocan fumed, turning to Rep. Tony Wied (R-Wisc.), who stood by during the verbal flare.
'He funnels over $500,000 a year of his campaign money to buy signs from his company,' Van Orden interrupted.
Pocan then asked if he was intoxicated.
'Okay, look that up. Oh my God. Are you drinking right now, Derrick? That's the real question. All right,' the Wisconsin Democrat said.
Their back-and-forth represents a larger divide among representatives in the House who are reeling from sweeping cuts to social services and new reforms lauded by the spending legislation.

Sen. Slotkin says Harris' fatal flaw was lack of focus, prioritizing 'everything' and therefore 'nothing'

As Democrats reel from their November loss to President Donald Trump, Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., called out former Vice President Kamala Harris for failing to win over the electorate. New York Times political reporter Katie Glueck spoke to Slotkin in an interview this week headlined, "Elissa Slotkin Wants Democrats to Reclaim Their 'Alpha Energy.'" "In your recent economic speech, you argued that some Democrats conflate large multinational corporations with small businesses, making it seem to many Americans as if Democrats are anti-business or are vilifying success," Glueck noted, before asking, "But the Harris campaign explicitly emphasized support for small businesses. Why did that effort fail?" "Kamala Harris had a very short time to formulate her campaign. But I don't think I can say with a straight face that the Michigan public felt her main agenda was support for small businesses," Slotkin replied. "Democrats were saying we were for everything, that everything was a priority, everything was important," the senator added. "And so the American public couldn't understand what we really prioritized and cared about. Donald Trump, whether you believe him or not, prioritized the talking point of cost of living and the economy." She concluded, "Democrats have policy plans on their websites about good things that they support. I still think we have good ideas. But when you prioritize everything, you actually prioritize nothing." This is not the first time Slotkin has called out leadership of the Democratic Party after the election. At the same time however, she herself has been put in the spotlight for vague policy rhetoric. She made headlines in April for a speech where she called out her own party as "weak and woke" and urged them to "f---ing retake the flag" as she prepares a "war plan" to defeat Trump and the Republican agenda. However, some have challenged such reformers to specify what progressive cultural policies they will leave behind in order to win back moderates. Fox News Digital reached out to Harris' office and received no immediate reply.

Trump signs first major crypto bill the GENIUS Act into law

In a landmark victory for the crypto industry, President Donald Trump signed the GENIUS Act into law, establishing a regulatory framework for a type of digital currency known as stablecoins. The GENIUS Act creates rules for entities that issue stablecoins, whose value is tied to an asset like the US dollar. Those rules govern who's allowed to issue stablecoins, how they need to maintain reserves, what happens in the case of bankruptcy, and an obligation to prevent money laundering. Trump congratulated members of the crypto industry who attended the signing ceremony at the White House, including the CEOs of Coinbase and Tether. He drew a stark contrast between the Biden administration, which he called 'a vicious group of people' who were 'trying to crush your industry,' and himself. 'I got you guys out of so much trouble,' Trump said. 'The entire crypto community, for years, you were mocked and dismissed and counted out,' Trump said. 'But this signing is a massive validation of your hard work and your pioneering spirit.' He added that he chose to back crypto 'at an early stage' because it will make the US dollar stronger. 'And I also did it for the votes,' he said to a round of laughter from the audience, 'because you did come out and vote.' 'This signing is a massive validation of your hard work and your pioneering spirit' The bill passed through both chambers of Congress with bipartisan support, with backers saying it creates necessary safeguards for the industry and keeps the US competitive in the space. But it also saw opposition from other members on both sides. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) criticized the bill as 'a huge giveaway to Big Tech,' citing concerns it would incentivize companies that issue stablecoins to collect more financial data on consumers. In a speech on the Senate floor, Senate Banking Committee Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), said that the bill 'is riddled with loopholes and contains weak safeguards for consumers, national security, and financial stability.' Warren and other Democrats have also warned that legitimizing the stablecoin industry through the legislation could bolster a potential avenue of corruption for Trump. Trump's family is involved in crypto firm World Liberty Financial that launched its own stablecoin, USD1. The White House has said the venture creates no conflicts for the president as his assets are in a trust managed by his kids. 'Through his crypto businesses, President Trump has created an efficient means to trade presidential favors like tariff exemptions, pardons, and government appointments for hundreds of millions—perhaps billions—of dollars from foreign governments, from billionaires, and from large corporations,' Warren said. 'This is the single greatest corruption scandal in American history and, by passing the GENIUS Act, the Senate is about to not only bless this corruption, but to actively facilitate its expansion.' As Trump signed the GENIUS Act, he tried to steer attention to what he's billed as 'a big scandal' for his predecessor. 'This is not an autopen, by the way.' Trump quipped.
