Alleged ‘Hollywood Con Queen' loses fight against extradition from UK to US
Hargobind Tahilramani is wanted in California on charges of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for allegedly defrauding around 300 people out of a total of approximately US$1 million (RM4.23 million) between 2013 and 2020.
The 45-year-old is accused of tricking people into travelling to Indonesia and paying exorbitant fees for non-existent film work, before he was arrested in a hotel in Manchester, England, in November 2020.
Tahilramani's extradition was approved by a judge and then British ministers in 2023, but he challenged the decision to send him to the US to stand trial, arguing prison conditions would breach his human rights due to his mental health.
His lawyer Edward Fitzgerald told London's High Court in April that Tahilramani, who has applied for asylum in Britain, was also at risk of being attacked in prison as a gay man.
Fitzgerald said this meant Tahilramani was likely to be held in isolation while in pre-trial detention, which put him at high risk of suicide given his underlying mental health issues.
But Tahilramani's appeal was dismissed by Judge Derek Sweeting, who said in a written ruling that the lower court was not wrong when it ordered his extradition to stand trial. — Reuters

Foo Fighters tap Ilan Rubin as new drummer, Josh Freese joins Nine Inch Nails
LOS ANGELES, July 31 — The Foo Fighters have named Ilan Rubin, longtime touring drummer for Nine Inch Nails, as their new drummer following Josh Freese's departure in May. According to Rolling Stone, Freese is now set to rejoin Nine Inch Nails for their upcoming Peel It Back tour, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. Rubin, who has toured with Nine Inch Nails since 2009, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 at age 32 — the youngest ever with the band. Suspected arsonist appears in court over Melbourne synagogue fire that shocked Australia

Giovanni Laulu, 21, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court Thursday (July 31) after his arrest at a Melbourne home on Wednesday. Police allege Laulu is one of three masked men who spread a liquid accelerant around the interior of the Adass Israel Synagogue then set it alight before dawn on Dec. 6. A worshipper preparing for morning prayers suffered minor burns. Laulu is the first suspect to be caught, but police have foreshadowed more arrests. Police suspect there are also accomplices who planned the attack from overseas. Laulu was charged with arson, reckless conduct endangering life and car theft. Laulu confirmed his name but otherwise remained silent during the brief court appearance. He did not enter pleas or apply to be released on bail. His lawyer told Magistrate Brett Sonnett this was not Laulu's first time in prison. Laulu was then remanded in custody and will appear in court next on Aug. 6. Prosecutors sought 12 weeks to gather evidence against Laulu and said 11 cell phones need to be analysed. Sonnett gave the prosecution until Oct. 22 to present their case to Laulu's lawyers. Federal and state police, plus Australia's main domestic spy agency, have been investigating the crime, which is suspected to be politically motivated. Police say more than 220 law enforcement officers have devoted more than 50,000 hours to the investigation.
