Kuwait health official urges global action against drug addiction

Arab Times12-06-2025
KUWAIT CITY, June 12: Dr. Abeer Al-Bahou, Director of the Health Promotion Department at the Ministry of Health, affirmed that drug abuse remains a complex and pressing global challenge, affecting millions of lives and demanding coordinated international efforts to confront organized smuggling networks.
Her remarks came during the launch of a national awareness campaign held Thursday at Jaber Hospital, coinciding with the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The campaign will run through the end of June and targets youth and adolescents in particular, aiming to prevent addiction and promote healthy, informed choices.
Dr. Al-Bahou noted that this year's campaign is being held under the theme: 'The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention to Break the Cycle.' The slogan underscores the critical need to support communities, provide effective health care, and strengthen global solidarity in the fight against drug abuse and illegal trafficking.
She stressed that addressing the far-reaching and complex impact of drugs requires adopting a scientifically grounded approach focused on prevention and treatment. Effective anti-drug policies, she emphasized, must be rooted in evidence, research, human rights, empathy, and a deep understanding of the social, economic, and health consequences of addiction.
Dr. Al-Bahou further highlighted the growing global threat posed by the rising production of synthetic drugs and the psychological crises often linked to addiction. These developments, she said, necessitate greater integration between mental health services and addiction treatment.
She also called for raising public awareness of the dangers posed by synthetic and digital drugs, while emphasizing the need to strengthen forensic capabilities, improve detection of emerging substances, enforce legal measures, and intensify international and regional cooperation. This includes information sharing and coordinated raids to dismantle transnational smuggling operations.
The campaign reflects Kuwait's ongoing commitment to addressing drug abuse through education, policy, and public health intervention, while aligning with global efforts to combat the illicit drug trade.

Kuwait launches awareness campaign for World Breastfeeding Week

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 5: The Ministry of Health (MoH) has launched an awareness campaign in celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, focusing on encouraging mothers to breastfeed and raising public awareness about its numerous health benefits. Dr. Hasnaa Ayyad, Director of the Nutrition and Feeding Department at the Ministry's Public Health Sector, highlighted in a press statement on Tuesday that the campaign will feature educational exhibitions and collaborations with various health entities, both governmental and non-governmental. The campaign will take place at key health facilities, including the New Maternity Hospital, Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital, and Al-Adan Hospital. Dr. Ayyad emphasized that the goal of the campaign is to inform the public about the vital role breastfeeding plays in both maternal and child health. The campaign will also underscore the importance of community support for breastfeeding mothers. A variety of educational materials, such as short awareness videos and field events, will be featured across different health institutions. "Breastfeeding is the ideal source of nutrition for infants," Dr. Ayyad stated. "It provides babies with essential nutrients and natural immunity, strengthens the bond between mother and child, and significantly lowers the risk of chronic diseases in mothers." The campaign also aims to raise awareness about the critical role health institutions and the community play in supporting breastfeeding, encouraging sound health practices, and fostering a healthier future generation. Dr. Ayyad called on all health agencies and institutions to participate in the campaign and to help spread awareness about the importance of breastfeeding. The Ministry has set a target to increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life to 70 percent by 2030, in line with national health goals and the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). The Ministry's initiative reflects Kuwait's ongoing commitment to improving maternal and child health, ensuring a well-informed public, and working toward a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come.
