Israel Defence Minister clashes with IDF Chief over senior military appointments

Tel Aviv, Aug 12 (UNI) Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had a public dispute with Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir late yesterday over senior appointments in the military, as per Times of Israel.
A media leak prior to the announcement of the appointments led to Katz' row with Zamir, with the Defence Minister slamming the military chief in a public statement.
Katz said the meeting held by Zamir was conducted 'contrary to the defence minister's directive and without prior coordination and agreement, in violation of established procedure.'
Katz added he had 'no intention of discussing or approving any of the appointments or names' that were leaked.
'The Chief of Staff will be required to coordinate in advance with the defence minister in order to discuss these or other appointments in the future,' he said.
Noting that the Defence Ministry was superior to the military in authority, and that the IDF was subordinate to its policies, Zamir hit back at the office after announcing the appointments.
Releasing a statement from the IDF, Zamir said that 'staffing discussion was scheduled in advance, in accordance with regulations.'
'The chief of staff is the sole authority under regulations for appointing commanders at the rank of colonel and above in the IDF. The chief of staff holds an orderly staffing discussion with the participation of the General Staff forum,' the military said in the statement.
'The chief of staff decides on the appointments, after which the appointment goes to the (defence) minister for approval, who may approve or not approve the appointment,' the IDF added.
The spat between the two carried over on Tuesday, with Katz releasing another statement, insisting that he would follow the accepted procedures.
'Since these are joint appointments by the Defence Minister and the IDF chief of staff, there is an accepted procedure for appointments of ranks colonel and up in the IDF,' Katz said. 'No discussion of IDF shakeups is held before the accepted procedure is carried out.'
Katz said he has 'clarified to the chief of staff that he needs more time and the discussion must not be held at this time,' adding that he will 'weigh whether to promote senior officers on the Gaza front who haven't served the accepted timeframe for their roles to other roles before the task of defeating Hamas in Gaza has been completed.'
Katz also said he will examine whether to promote officers who served as commanders on the Gaza front during the Hamas onslaught of October 7, 2023, or whose names were linked to 'irregular incidents in the past.'
'The military echelon is subordinate to the defence minister and will act in accordance with his orders and the policy he will set,' he stressed. UNI ANV SSP

Trump, Putin arrive in Alaska for high-stakes talks on Ukraine

New Delhi, Aug 15 (UNI) US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Alaska this evening for their high stakes meeting for peace in Ukraine. Immediately after dismounting from their respective aircraft, both leaders shook hands. Both leaders are accompanied by high-level delegations indicating that the talks could also include issues like trade and economy, besides peace in Ukraine. President Putin is accompanied by his Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Policy Aide Yuri Ushakov, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Special Envoy on foreign investment and economic cooperation Kirill Dmitriev. The US delegation includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and other senior members. According to reports these include Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy for peace missions. Ahead of the meeting Yury Ushakov said the programme for the leaders' meeting has been agreed upon. He said that everything will start at approximately 11:30 local time with a one-on-one between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Following this the talks will continue in a delegation format, extending into a working breakfast. He said that given the highly sensitive and critical topics will be discussed, the negotiating parties have been limited to a select group. On the Russian side, the delegation will include Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Special Presidential Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries Kirill Dmitriev, besides Ushakov himself. The composition of the American delegation is also known, though it would be appropriate to await an official announcement from our American partners. Thus, in addition to the presidents themselves, each delegation will include five members. Naturally, expert teams will also be present nearby. After the talks, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump will hold a joint news conference to sum up the results of the negotiations. Regarding the summit's agenda, it is evident to all that the central topic will be the settlement of the Ukraine crisis, including considerations from the discussions held in the Kremlin on August 6 with the participation of the US President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. However, broader issues related to ensuring peace and security, as well as pressing international and regional matters, will also be addressed. An exchange of views on the further development of bilateral cooperation, including in the trade and economic spheres, is also expected. ''It is worth noting that this cooperation holds immense, yet regrettably underutilised, potential.'' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said ahead of the talks that Ukraine is ready to work as productively as possible to bring the war to an end. ''We count on a strong position from America. Everything will depend on this – the Russians factor in American strength. Russia must end the war. The killings must stop. A meeting of leaders is needed–at the very least, Ukraine, America, and the Russian side–and it is precisely in such a format that effective decisions are possible. Security guarantees are needed. Lasting peace is very much needed,'' Zelenskyy said. UNI RB 0040

Rivals no more? Hillary Clinton backs Trump for Nobel if he ends Ukraine war; US president reacts

US President Donald Trump and former rival Hillary Clinton's relationship seems to be taking a new turn. From rivalry to maybe friendly, as Clinton promised to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he ended the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump on Friday described it as 'very nice' and said, 'Well, uh, that was … very nice." 'I may have to start liking her again,' the president added of Clinton, the former first lady, secretary of state and two-time defeated presidential candidate, as he travelled aboard Air Force One for a high-stakes meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. 'Honestly, if he could bring about the end to this terrible war, if he could end it without putting Ukraine in a position where it had to concede its territory to the aggressor, could really stand up to Putin — something we haven't seen, but maybe this is the opportunity — if President Trump were the architect of that, I'd nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize,' she told podcast host Jessica Tarlov, New York Post reported. The president has already been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga) and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his efforts in securing a cease-fire between Israel and Iran. The governments of Pakistan and Cambodia also indicated they have nominated Trump for the prize. Trump's role in negotiating a peace framework between Azerbaijan and Armenia similarly resulted in the leaders of both nations expressing support for Trump winning the prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee is expected to announce the peace prize winner on October 10.
