Middle East aviation takes off
'New' is the theme in the Middle East's growing aviation sphere: new cities, new aircraft and new markets.
The International Air Transport Association (Iata) says carriers in the region are expected to post the highest net profit margin in the world this year, at 8.7 per cent.
These are strong numbers from the Middle East. But they are coming at a volatile time.
Host Salim Essaid hears from The National 's own Deena Kamel and StrategicAero Research's Saj Ahmad on what to expect from air travel in the region.

VLT Robotics celebrates four years by expanding its robotic barista café empire
VLT Robotics, the pioneering force behind robotic innovation in the F&B sector has proudly celebrated its 4th anniversary since its founding in Dubai on June 3, 2021. With nearly a decade of experience by its founding team in building intelligent automation for the food and beverage industry, VLT Robotics continues to revolutionise customer experiences through its flagship creation: CafeXbot - the world's only multi-product, talking robotic barista café. VLT Robotics' journey began well before its official establishment in Dubai. Since 2015, its founders have been pushing the boundaries of F&B automation - from developing humanoid robots that interacted with guests and took orders to creating Ice Alice, a fully automated robotic ice cream kiosk. These innovations paved the way for the ultimate creation: CafeXbot, a state-of-the-art robotic café kiosk designed, developed, and launched in Dubai. CafeXbot stands apart as a premium experiential robotic barista café capable of serving up to eight varieties of food and beverages, including freshly brewed coffee, ice cream, frozen yogurt, hot chocolate, milkshakes, tea, cakes, and cookies. What truly makes CafeXbot exceptional is its ability to engage customers through interactive speech, choreographed movements, and musical performances, blending automation, entertainment, and efficiency in one compact unit. In Dubai, CafeXbot has become a popular attraction at leading entertainment and family destinations, including KidZania, Dubai Ice Rink, Riverland, and Dubai Miracle Garden. With its engaging service and futuristic appeal, CafeXbot is transforming how people perceive robotic service, not just in the UAE but globally. The technology behind the CafeXbot robotic barista café is now making waves across international markets. Sold as a white-labeled product, CafeXbot can be found operating under various brand identities in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, France, and Georgia. Expansion continues at a rapid pace, with new deals secured in Florida, USA, Romania, and several other countries eager to integrate this revolutionary robotic café into their hospitality offerings. Beyond permanent installations, CafeXbot is also a top choice for exhibitions, conferences, and corporate activations. Major brands such as Etisalat, Emirates Airlines, EDB Bank, and numerous government entities have partnered with VLT Robotics to showcase CafeXbot at high-profile events, underscoring its wide appeal and commercial potential. With a return on investment (ROI) ranging from 80 per cent to 150 per cent in prime locations, the CafeXbot robotic barista café is not only a technological marvel but also a financially sound solution for businesses looking to enhance customer engagement while optimising operational costs. 'We are proud to celebrate four years of innovation, growth, and global recognition,' said Michael Mit, co-founder and CMO of VLT Robotics. 'CafeXbot represents the future of F&B automation — it's interactive, intelligent, and incredibly efficient. As we look ahead, our mission is to continue expanding across borders and to redefine customer experiences through robotics.'
