Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, a British citizen, miraculously survived the Ahmedabad plane crash that killed 241 other passengers on the ill-fated Air India flight.
Ramesh Vishwas Kumar, the lone survivor of last week's Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, has been discharged from the Civil Hospital after he showed signs of recovery.
Kumar is a British citizen of Indian origin who miraculously survived the deadly Ahmedabad plane crash, which left all 241 co-passengers dead. A video showing him walking out alive from the site stunned users on social media.
Ramesh was seated in 11A, according to the flight manifest. It's still unclear how he survived, but parts of the aircraft were reportedly intact after the crash.
Footage taken shortly after the crash showed Ramesh limping towards an ambulance, covered in blood, but alive. He was later photographed in hospital, with visible injuries to his face, chest and feet.
Speaking to the media from the hospital bed, he said that he was a British national of Indian origin and had visited India to meet his family. He was travelling back with his brother. 'At first, I thought I was dead. Later, I realised I was still alive and saw an opening in the fuselage near my seat. I managed to unbuckle myself. I used my leg to push through that opening and crawled out," he told News18.
'There were bodies all around me, and there were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance."

Ahmedabad plane crash: Lone survivor discharged from hospital; attends brother's cremation in Diu

AHMEDABAD: Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of the Air India plane crash, has been discharged from the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital following his recovery, and he later attended the cremation of his deceased brother, who was flying with him on the same aircraft, officials said on Wednesday. Vishwas, a 40-year-old British businessman from Leicester, was discharged on Tuesday evening, they said. The mortal remains of his brother Ajay were handed over to the family in the early hours of Wednesday after a DNA test confirmed his identity, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital's medical superintendent, Dr Rakesh Joshi, told reporters. "Vishwas' family has already arrived here from the United Kingdom. Following his recovery, we gave discharge to Vishwas at 7.30 pm on Tuesday, and his brother's mortal remains were also handed over to the family after a DNA match," he said. Vishwas and Ajay, who were natives of Diu, were heading back to London after spending some time with their family members in the union territory.

Odisha to conduct fresh survey to identify new habitats for gharials

BHUBANESWAR: Celebrating 50 years of 'Project Crocodile' in the state, the Odisha government on Tuesday announced to conduct a fresh survey to identity new potential habitats for gharial species of the reptile, population of which has been revived from the brink of extinction in the Mahanadi river system, after decades of struggle. The report 'Back from the brink - Conserving the Gharials of Mahanadi', released by the Forest, Environment and Climate Change department on the day as part of the celebration, stated that the comprehensive survey is proposed to re-evaluate existing threats, assess changes in river physiography, and identify potential new habitats for gharials. Study of wild gharials - both adults and hatchlings - is also necessary to monitor their breeding dynamics, courtship, nesting, hatchling behaviour, maternal guarding, and dispersal patterns, the report underlined. Genetic study is also crucial for long-term survival of gharials in the Mahanadi river, it added. Forest and Environment minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia said, Odisha has successfully revived and sustained crocodile populations in the state over the last 50 years. 'Our state is home to all three species of Indian crocodiles - saltwater, mugger and gharial, and currently, we are focusing on maximising the population of the critically endangered gharial in the Mahanadi through a dedicated Species Recovery Programme,' he added.
