Talented Ysgol Betws Gwerful Goch dancers to visit Patagonia
Tony and Donna Cooper-Barney, who own the five-star Palé Hall at Llandderfel, near Bala, raised nearly £16,000 by cycling 423 kilometres from Cannes in France to Pisa in Italy.
Their initial aim was to raise £10,000 for Ysgol Betws Gwerful Goch, near Corwen, in memory of their late son, James.
However, the target was surpassed and extended to £15,000.
The school's talented dancers, aged nine to 11, along with 30 from Clocswyr Conwy, have been invited to travel to Patagonia in October for a two-week visit.Tony and Donna Cooper-Barney with the pupils of Ysgol Betws Gwerful Goch and their teacher Hannah Blackford at Palé Hall (Image: Palé Hall)
The pupils will represent Wales and showcase the country's folk dancing and singing traditions, performing and teaching their skills to schools in Trelew, Patagonia, where there is a Welsh-speaking community.
The young dancers visited Palé Hall with their teacher, Hannah Blackford, to thank Tony and Donna and performed Welsh traditional dances and songs for them.
Tony and Donna said: "We are going to send the children to Patagonia and that would not have been possible without your support.
"We set an initial fundraising target of £10,000, then increased it to £15,000 and it's amazing how much money has been raised.
"This is a cause very close to our hearts.
"It's a cultural exchange, a chance for these young people to share their Welsh heritage, learn from others and build lifelong friendships rooted in mutual respect and tradition."
The couple completed the cycle marathon for the James Barney Foundation, a charity they created in memory of James, who died in a car accident at the age of 16.
The foundation helps children and young people pursue life-changing opportunities.
The couple's fundraising page is still open for donations.
The Patagonia trip is being organised by Ms Blackford, a teacher at Ysgol Betws Gwerful Goch who also teaches traditional Welsh folk dance at the school and the Clocswyr Conwy group.
She said: "I honestly couldn't believe it when I received a call to say that Tony and Donna were cycling to raise the £10,000.
"There's a real buzz around the school and the community and it will be an incredible and unforgettable experience for the children to visit Patagonia.
"They have worked so hard.
"It wouldn't be happening without Tony and Donna and the Palé Hall connection with the James Barney Foundation."
It's not the first time Tony and Donna have taken on fundraising challenges for the foundation, having previously climbed Kilimanjaro, walked the Great Wall of China and cycled through France.

Outlander star looks unrecognisable as she stuns at glitzy event
Outlander fans couldn't believe their eyes as the actress attended the Tony Awards ceremony last week Outlander actress Laura Donnelly looked sensational as she graced the red carpet alongside some star-studded showbiz faces. Hollywood legends such as George Clooney and Sadie Sink were also nominated at the Tony awards. Laura, famed for her role as Jenny Fraser in the early seasons of the hit Starz show, was nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Play for her performance in The Hills of California. And the Irish-born actress looked stunning, with many fans complimenting her on the night earlier this week on Monday, June 9, saying she looked almost "unrecognisable". "Did anyone notice Laura Donnelly as one of the presenters on the TONY awards. She looked so different," quipped one Outlander fan. "If they hadn't posted her name, I would not have known that she was 'our Jenny'," said another. Laura's performance, in which she plays two roles, was described by the New York Times as a 'blur of skittery emotion'. Although she didn't walk away with top gongs, she certainly got everyone talking at the event hosted in New York on June 9. The 78th Tony Awards, which were hosted by Cynthia Erivo, recognises excellence in live Broadway theatre. The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League at an annual ceremony in Manhattan. Jamie Fraser's (played by Sam Heughan) older sister Jenny Murray was a key character of the Starz drama for the first three seasons of Outlander. In the show, Jenny decided to leave with Jamie for America after her husband Ian Murray (Steven Cree) died, believing there to be no reason to stay in Lallybroch. However, fans were unaware at the time that this would be the final time they would see Laura in the role. She left the historical drama due to having various other commitments. She was performing The Ferryman on Broadway at the time and was pregnant with her second child. Not bringing Donnelly back as Jenny wasn't for a lack of trying though, as executive producer Maril Davis told Entertainment Weekly in 2018. She explained: "We had every intention of having a Brianna and Jenny [moment] but we waited and we kept dragging our feet, quite honestly, because we thought we could convince her and the schedules would change. "We could move our schedule and accommodate her but at the end of the day, it just didn't work out so we scrambled to come up with another story.' Donnelly herself also said following her departure that a comeback was unlikely as she thought Jenny would be old and so 'I think that's probably me out'.
