Outlander star looks unrecognisable as she stuns at glitzy event

Outlander fans couldn't believe their eyes as the actress attended the Tony Awards ceremony last week
Outlander actress Laura Donnelly looked sensational as she graced the red carpet alongside some star-studded showbiz faces. Hollywood legends such as George Clooney and Sadie Sink were also nominated at the Tony awards.
Laura, famed for her role as Jenny Fraser in the early seasons of the hit Starz show, was nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Play for her performance in The Hills of California.

And the Irish-born actress looked stunning, with many fans complimenting her on the night earlier this week on Monday, June 9, saying she looked almost "unrecognisable".

"Did anyone notice Laura Donnelly as one of the presenters on the TONY awards. She looked so different," quipped one Outlander fan.
"If they hadn't posted her name, I would not have known that she was 'our Jenny'," said another. Laura's performance, in which she plays two roles, was described by the New York Times as a 'blur of skittery emotion'.
Although she didn't walk away with top gongs, she certainly got everyone talking at the event hosted in New York on June 9.
The 78th Tony Awards, which were hosted by Cynthia Erivo, recognises excellence in live Broadway theatre. The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League at an annual ceremony in Manhattan.
Jamie Fraser's (played by Sam Heughan) older sister Jenny Murray was a key character of the Starz drama for the first three seasons of Outlander.

In the show, Jenny decided to leave with Jamie for America after her husband Ian Murray (Steven Cree) died, believing there to be no reason to stay in Lallybroch.
However, fans were unaware at the time that this would be the final time they would see Laura in the role.

She left the historical drama due to having various other commitments.
She was performing The Ferryman on Broadway at the time and was pregnant with her second child. Not bringing Donnelly back as Jenny wasn't for a lack of trying though, as executive producer Maril Davis told Entertainment Weekly in 2018.

She explained: "We had every intention of having a Brianna and Jenny [moment] but we waited and we kept dragging our feet, quite honestly, because we thought we could convince her and the schedules would change.
"We could move our schedule and accommodate her but at the end of the day, it just didn't work out so we scrambled to come up with another story.'
Donnelly herself also said following her departure that a comeback was unlikely as she thought Jenny would be old and so 'I think that's probably me out'.

Laura welcomed daughter Bonnie, whom she shares with ex Gary, in 2023. The couple had an on-and-off relationship, but things are now on bad terms with Laura even branding Gary a "deadbeat dad". Last month Gary seemingly reignited his feud with his Celebs Go Dating ex Laura after warning that "dads matter". The former Footballers' Wives star made the apparent dig while sharing a throwback video of himself and his son Theodore, six. Gary had been filmed in a restaurant as he sat next to Theodore and they could be seen giggling about "spicy" food together. The actor then gently grabbed his son's cheeks and said: "Look at that face, that gorgeous face.." The video finished with Gary giving Theodore a kiss. Gary, 43, shared the footage on Instagram but seemed to have also made a swipe at Laura, 36, in the process. Laura has taken aim at Gary several times in the past over Bonnie being snapped with her dad rarely. Gavin and Stacey star told to give up acting career because of mystery illness

Gavin and Stacey star Laura Aikman revealed she was advised to change her job after she was diagnosed with an illness that made her 'very unwell' Gavin and Stacey star Laura Aikman revealed she was told to give up her acting career after she was struck down a mystery illness. The 39-year-old actress, known for playing Smithy's partner Sonia in the popular sitcom, struggled with painful symptoms for many years before she learned she had ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic autoimmune condition which causes inflammation and ulcers in the colon. Symptoms include recurring diarrhoea, stomach pain, needing to poo frequently as well as extreme fatigue and loss of appetite. In a recent interview, Laura revealed it took her a 'long time' before she was diagnosed and spent a long time 'very, very unwell'. ‌ ‌ She explained The Sun: "I'd been to the doctors a lot and they kept telling me that it was probably piles, without examining me, and giving me cream because I had blood in my stool. Nothing worked. "And then I went to a homeopath and she asked me all of these questions about when I'd been poorly and she was like, 'Listen, I've written out a timeline here of when you've not been working, and that is when you've been at your most unwell'." The actor was asked whether she would consider finding another career but insisted acting was her 'entire personality'. The stress from not working between acting roles ended up worsening her illness. Laura is now in a BBC gangster drama called This City is Ours. She also stars in Disney+'s Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes as Lana Vandenberghe. Last year, she reprised her role as Sonia in the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special. She was also in ITV's Archie, Joan and The Rising. ‌ The star previously discussed her role on This City Is Ours. The actress, whose surprise appearance as Smithy's bride in the Christmas Day special shocked the nation, stars as Rachel Duffy in BBC One 's drugs drama This City Is Ours. Filming on the big-budget series took place last year, at the same time as Laura was filming Gavin and Stacey. 'It was the year of the bitch,' laughs Laura. 'But they're great to play.' While pretentious Sonia was what Laura cheerfully called a 'rotter', Rachel is a much darker character, with ambitions to become a major player in Liverpool's dark drugs scene. ‌ It was a refreshing role for Laura, having spent much of her career playing romantic love interests. 'One of the first things I fell in love with about Rachel was that she never tries to make other people feel comfortable,' explained Laura earlier this year. 'We all have that tendency to laugh at a bad joke or fill silence but Rachel doesn't give a s**t. 'She's happy for everyone to get uncomfortable. She can be quite rude, she tells people what she thinks, she doesn't like new people but she's really smart, she's determined and she's ambitious.'

‘We gave up the internet for five days - I'm surprised my marriage didn't end'

In a world where we're all a little bit too reliant on the internet, what happens when you switch off for five days? We tasked social media influencer Laura Dove, who lives in Lancashire with her husband Gareth and four children, with giving it a go. Rewind 30 years back to 1995 and you may remember a time before the internet really took off when we had landlines, knocked on our friends' doors to see if they could play out and came home when the streetlights came on. So if you were asked to go back 30 years and give up the internet for five days, could you? Social media influencer Laura, 44, who relies on the internet to share the best bits of her family life with her 107k Instagram followers, agreed to take on the challenge of switching off the wifi for five days. ‌ Her children Lewis, 21, Eva, 12, Megan, 11 and Harrison, 10, are also avid internet users and have unlimited access to Nintendo and EA Sports FC games, Disney +, Netflix and SnapChat. ‌ Laura says the funniest thing that happened during the five day switch off was when her 10 year old asked her 'Where did the internet come from?' 'I had to tell him I had no idea because I couldn't Google it,' she laughs. 'The experiment was great at first but the kids soon got annoyed with each other, because they had to spend more time together and they missed talking to their friends. 'We talked more, there were less distractions and we watched TV together as a family because there was no streaming so we couldn't all watch separate things. I really enjoyed taking the kids back to 1995, because I grew up in the 1990s and telling them if we wanted to play with our friends we knocked on their doors.' Surprisingly, when Laura told the kids they were going to be going without WiFi, data, or their phones for five days they were actually excited about it. One of the highlights of the experiment was when they plugged in the old dial up landline. 'Megan was like 'This is like something I've seen in a museum' which was devastating for me, as I remember them. They used the phone to ring their grandparents which was nice, as they usually just text them. But they couldn't ring their friends as they didn't know their phone numbers. "In the evening, without our normal gadgets, I suggested we listen to some music on the personal headset - I made them listen to the Spice Girls, and they were like: 'Did you really listen to this?' I told them I did, I even went to see them live. They quite liked playing with Tamagotchis too - they have made a bit of a comeback recently so they weren't as unfamiliar as some of the other gadgets we had.' But two days in and the cracks began to show. 'After a couple of days I started to feel quite stressed about not being able to connect - not just for work but also for things like banking, school updates and reminders from other parents. Our day-to-day lives are not set up to live in a world without the internet - I even do my banking online as my local branch has shut down.' ‌ 'Harry asked me: 'How long is this going to last?' and I have to admit I could see where he was coming from - as I wasn't enjoying it either,' Laura says. 'Literally everything we do now is online - my job, the kids' homework, school correspondence, our food shop, banking. I wouldn't want to do it again unless I had a whole week off work and I didn't have any commitments. It's nice for a weekend but Monday to Friday, no.' That said the experiment did have some positives as well as negatives. 'We're constantly being bombarded with noise from everything - pings from our phones, watches - so it's nice to switch off as we don't need to be constantly connected. ‌ "There are also a lot of positives to social media, working from home, connecting with other people but I'm glad I had the experiences I did growing up. 'And the experiment wasn't all bad - at bedtime Eva was reading, Harry was doing Lego, and Megan was playing with loom-bands. And when I said it was bedtime they just went: 'Ok.' We'll be having more screen free nights going forward - even if it's only once or twice a week. I was surprised there were no major meltdowns and my marriage didn't end.' Katie Milligan, Deputy CEO of Openreach, said: 'It's fascinating to see how different parts of the UK are embracing the online world and adapting to it in unique ways. At the same time, it's encouraging that many recognise the importance of taking time away from devices and digital connectivity." 'With full fibre now available to almost 19 million homes and businesses across the UK, thanks to the dedication of Openreach engineers, we're proud to provide the nation's most reliable broadband technology. It's a game-changer, allowing people to do what they need to do - only faster and more efficiently.'
