SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Abby Martinez couldn't believe it.
'I didn't know anything about it,' Martinez said. 'I just knew our superintendent just sent out an email saying that there was going to be some sort of an award.'
When Martinez stepped into the elementary school gym, she had no idea that she was the reason. Martinez is one of KELOLAND's Remarkable Women winners. She teaches third grade at Jones County Elementary School in Murdo, South Dakota.
'I've always had a passion for kids and working with kids, and so there's never been a point in my life where I haven't worked with kids,' Martinez said. 'I've worked in school districts outside of teaching as well, but every job that I've ever had pretty well revolves around kids.'
When she's not in the classroom, Martinez is an advocate for foster care and adoption. She also runs gymnastics and wrestling classes and has co-founded a rural youth leadership program.
'Abby's commitment to her students, family, and community has made her an exceptional role model, proving that small town living doesn't limit one's aspirations,' Ashley Geigle, who nominated Martinez for the award, said.
Martinez received a $1,000 donation to the charity of her choice. She's decided to give that money to Jones County Turner Youth.
'They fundraise and they fund projects in our community that are driven by kids. You know, how do we think that we can best impact the youth of our community?' Martinez said.
She said she's passionate about empowering children to use their voices to impact their community.
'My son, four years ago, dreamed of having a wrestling team in our community. He stood up in front of a community meeting of about 70 adults and got to the microphone and told them that he wanted a wrestling team,' Martinez said. 'And four years later, we've got a wrestling team.'
Her determination is helping kids unlock their potential through a limitless potential of her own.
Martinez is headed to Los Angeles to represent South Dakota in the National Remarkable Women Conference later this month. She will travel along with KELOLAND's second Remarkable Women winner — Jill Janecke.

2026 corn murals to feature patriotic theme

MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO)– Next year marks the 250th anniversary of America. The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4th, 1776. The Corn Palace in Mitchell is getting ready for the milestone. Rescue at Hippie Hole in the Black Hills Next year's murals will be all about the U.S. 'They're really representative of what our country's been through,' Corn Palace Director Dave Sietsema said. The patriotic theme of the 2026 designs coincides with the 250th anniversary of the country. 'We have some recruiting posters from the WWII era, we have the Wright Brothers aviation, we have the American eagle, the American flag, symbols like that that our country draws itself to to celebrate our patriotic side and who we are as a country,' Sietsema said. While the current murals will still remain up for months, work is underway to replace the material surrounding the murals. 'We've got a crew of high school and college kids who come back, we go out to any particular farmer's field and pick sour dock, like this right out of the field, and then we come back and we put in it a bundle like this,' Field Director Clark Mickelson said. The rye will also be replaced. Later this year, it will be time to add the new murals. 'Probably in October, November when the corn is harvested. It takes about 60 acres of corn to cover the corn palace,' Sietsema said. The murals were designed by Dakota Wesleyan students studying digital media and design. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Construction affects Sioux Falls city parks

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — New construction projects this week will impact people's access to a pair of Sioux Falls city parks. Starting Monday, crews will begin replacing the Riverdale Park asphalt bike trail with concrete. No access to the bike trail loop will be available from the park. Instead, you can get to the trail from either Rotary or Cherry Rock parks. The work should be finished next month. Also Monday, crews will be installing utilities at the new pool in McKennan Park. That means South 4th Avenue between Park Drive and 26th Street will be closed to traffic. The work should be finished in two weeks. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
