Storm Center PM Update: Storms Possible Monday; Cooler Tuesday
SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — While we've had smoky skies over most of KELOLAND, we've still been able to get in on a warm day. It's little solace, considering we've also had to deal with poor air quality for a better part of the day. The good news is that we get a frontal boundary to come along by Monday to help sweep this smoke out of the region…so air quality is expected to improve as we head beyond the Monday outlook. The bad news is that we'll have to contend with showers and thunderstorms…especially in the second half of the day. Some of those storms may become strong to severe in central and eastern KELOLAND. A 'Slight Risk' for severe weather is in place for most of eastern and southeastern South Dakota, the Marshall and Luverne areas in Minnesota, and portions of northwestern Iowa. A 'Marginal Risk' surrounds that for areas around Mission, Redfield, Sisseton, and Worthington. Damaging gusts and large hail are the main concerns, though there's always a non-zero isolated tornado risk. Please stay weather aware. Showers and a storm or two may linger through the first half of the day on Tuesday to the east and southeast, while West River locations get in on a pretty quiet and pleasant day with cooler temperatures. The pattern flips on Wednesday, with a mainly quiet day East River and scattered showers moving back into the picture in central and western KELOLAND. Daily chances for showers and a storm or two on both sides of the river will return by Thursday and stick around through the first half of the weekend. While no day is a total wash-out, you'll want to watch and see if you need to bring an umbrella where you go. All the while, temperatures will be much closer to average as we head through the second half of the week and into next weekend. Beyond the 7 day forecast, odds for near to above average temperatures are favored West River, while we have better chances to remain near average to the east. Storm Center PM Update: Starting June with Warmth and Smoke
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It has been another hazy day across KELOLAND, but temperatures have stayed above average in the 70s and 80s. Canadian wildfire smoke will continue to hang around going into the evening and through tomorrow. Most of the smoke will be aloft, but could be near the surface at times and reduce visibility. The quiet weather continues for tonight with lows staying seasonable in the 50s. Breezy winds West River will calm down and by tomorrow we will see southerly flow return. The heat will get turned up across KELOLAND, just in time for the first day of meteorological summer. We will see highs climb into the mid to upper 80s, with some of us sitting on the brink of 90. The upper level ridge that has been bringing us this warmth will move eastward into Monday and drag a cold front through KELOLAND. A line of showers and thunderstorms is looking to form late Monday afternoon and push eastward going into the evening. Portions of eastern and southern KELOLAND are in a slight risk for severe weather. The main threats with strong to severe storms will be large hail, strong wind gusts, and locally heavy rainfall. Behind the front, temperatures will cool back into the 60s and 70s. Going into next weekend, we will look to get back to more seasonable highs for this time of year. Flashback Friday: Rapid City seniors pound the pavement
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) —With the upcoming warmer temperatures many people will likely take their exercise routines outside this weekend, or just enjoy some fresh air with a stroll through the park. In this week's Flashback Friday, KELOLAND's Perry Groten takes us back to 1986 where some Rapid City Seniors were pounding the pavement for better health. This is not your everyday stroll through the park. These elderly athletes are pounding the pavement for fun, for a little competition, and a lot better health. 'I feel stronger, and my heart keeps pumping better, yeah I love it, I've been walking everyday.' 'That's not unusual for the elderly of 1986 they're very interested and involved in physical fitness.' Walkers to your marks. Get Set. Go! From the word go there was no stopping them. Competitors between the ages of 55 and 79 circled the course as part of two days of track and field events, less games like bowling and golf. Most train all year long, because walking a two mile race isn't easy no matter what the age. 'If you sit in a chair all day and sit at a desk sit in the car well those muscles are slowly dying, if you're out walking, working, using an axe or a shovel or anything that's going to use some muscles and increase the heart rate well you're going to improve your health.' After winning the race Callahan put his feet up for a quick rest, because in just a few minutes, he'll do it all over again. Perry Groten, KELOLAND News, Rapid City.
