Sarawak set to ban vape sales

Sarawak is the latest state to move towards completely banning the sale of vapes, joining Perlis, Terengganu, Kedah and Pahang.
PETALING JAYA : Sarawak is set to enforce a state-wide ban on the sale of vape products following growing concerns over their misuse for drug abuse.
State youth, sports and entrepreneur development minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the decision was reached during a recent meeting of the national drug eradication action council, Komso reported.
'Previously, vape was seen as just a substitute for smoking. But now, it's being widely misused to consume drugs and other harmful substances,' Karim was quoted as saying.
'That is why the government must look into this matter seriously, and at the state level, we have agreed unanimously to ban vapes.'
The announcement comes as other states ramp up enforcement on vape advertising and sales. In Selangor, vape traders were warned to remove advertisements or face action.
Unlike Sarawak, however, Selangor has yet to decide on a full ban on vape sales, with proposed guidelines still under review.
Several state governments have moved towards completely banning the sale of vapes, including Perlis, Terengganu, Kedah and Pahang, while Johor and Kelantan have banned the sale of these products since 2016 and 2015, respectively.

Health authorities investigate mysterious deaths of workers in Ulu Baram

MIRI, July 20 — The Miri Division Health Office has confirmed receiving preliminary reports of melioidosis cases and multiple fatalities involving workers near Sungai Kalai in Ulu Baram. According to health officer Dr P. Raviwharmman Packierisamy, a team comprising a medical officer and health inspectors has been deployed to the affected camp, which is located approximately nine to ten hours' drive from Miri via off-road timber tracks. 'A team from the Miri Division Health Office has been dispatched to the site to conduct investigations, screen other individuals with symptoms, make early referrals to the nearest healthcare facilities, and carry out health education, sanitation, and disease control measures,' he told The Borneo Post. The action follows reports of recent deaths involving several workers in the Ulu Baram area over the past week. Dr Raviwharmman noted that the health office has been working closely with the camp's management and that cooperation from the latter has been constructive. He emphasised that the situation remains isolated and is currently under control. It is understood that four men have died in recent weeks, with the most recent fatality recorded on Saturday, July 19. The individual reportedly passed away while receiving treatment at Miri Hospital. The series of deaths has reportedly raised concern and unease among nearby village communities, prompting heightened monitoring by the authorities. — The Borneo Post * Editor's note: An earlier version erroneously described the fatalities as affecting timber workers and has since been corrected.

Kelantan Health Dept washes hands off HIV outreach, after Malaysian AIDS Council clarifies misinformation over ‘gay sex party'

KOTA BHARU, July 20 — The Kelantan Health Department has today attempted to distance itself from an HIV health outreach programme in Pengkalan Chepa that was raided by then police, who then alleged that it was a 'gay sex party'. New Straits Times cited state health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin saying the programme was organised by a non-governmental organisation partner of the Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC). 'The programme was organised by an NGO,' he was quoted saying. 'The Kota Jembal health officer was only invited to deliver a health talk during one of the event's sessions,' he said. He also alleged that the police raid took place after the programme had concluded. On Friday, MAC confirmed that it conducted a night outreach session here on June 17 under the Differentiated HIV Services for Key Populations model. MAC said the session was in collaboration with Kota Jembal Health Clinic and part of a strategic approach introduced by the Health Ministry. It said the session was held from 8pm to 2am and had reached over 70 high-risk individuals, with services scheduled outside office hours to improve accessibility. This comes as a coalition of civil society groups had also urged Kelantan police to revise their statement on a June 2025 raid of an alleged 'gay sex party' here, which they clarified was in fact a health outreach event. The groups, led by transgender rights advocacy group Justice for Sisters, said media reports following the raid resulted in harmful and stigmatising remarks that have intensified fear among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals seeking health services.
