Tata Consumer products keeps its 'antennae up' for strategic buys

Tata Consumer Products was witnessing a significant shift in consumer behaviour and business models as customers were increasingly becoming more health conscious and seeking organic options, P B Balaji, non-executive, non-independent director at the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) unit of the Tata group, told shareholders at the company's annual general meeting (AGM) here on Wednesday.
Balaji chaired the AGM as the group's Chairman N Chandrasekaran was in New Delhi in connection with the relief operations following last week's Air India crash.
Talking about the B787 crash in Ahmedabad, Balaji said in his opening address: 'To lose a single person, we know, is a tragedy but for so many deaths to occur at once is incomprehensible. This is one of the darkest days in the Tata group's history. Words are no consolation right now but our thoughts are with the families and the loved ones of the people who died and who were injured in the crash. We are here for them.'
'India remains one of the fastest growing large economies in the world, with GDP (gross domestic product) growth estimated at north of 6 per cent. Against this backdrop, we are witnessing significant shifts in consumer behaviour and business models. Consumers are becoming more health-conscious, seeking better-for-you and organic options. There is a clear premiumisation trend, even in staples,' he said.
While talking about acquisitions, Balaji said, " You have your antennas up. If there's something sensible at the right price and it fits in well with our portfolio, we will do that. But rest assured, we have sizable amount of gunpowder with us, and therefore growing organically will be the first focus, and inorganic growth will be more bolt on."
Balaji added that distribution was being reshaped by quick commerce (qcom) but physical retail remained deeply relevant. 'At the same time, artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming every function, from demand forecasting and content generation to inventory optimisation and pricing intelligence. Companies that embed AI deeply into operations will lead the next phase of value creation,' he said, adding: At Tata Consumer, we are leveraging these trends with a bold strategy, disciplined execution, and an ambition to build a future-ready FMCG powerhouse.'
Five years ago when the company was formed, Balaji said, it had a largely single-category footprint of tea and coffee. In the five years, it has undergone a significant transformation and today the company was among the fastest-growing F&B (food and beverages) companies in India, operating across multiple categories and brands.
He also said that innovation was a critical muscle for an FMCG company, and over the last five years, Tata Consumer had significantly scaled its innovation efforts, launching over 150 products, and its innovation-to-sales ratio had grown from 0.8 per cent in 2019-20 (FY20) to 5.2 per cent in FY25, which was among the best in the industry.
'Digital is no longer a vertical. It is embedded across how we operate, go to market and engage with consumers. We have deployed several high-impact AI use cases across sales, marketing, sourcing, and R&D (research and development),' Balaji said.
He also said that the company has continued to strengthen its execution on emerging channels, with ecommerce (ecom) contribution growing over five times, enabled by exponential growth in qcom. 'As we look to the future, we are deepening our focus on quick commerce, pharmacy, and food services as high potential emerging channels,' he told shareholders.
'We see opportunity in creating an FMCG powerhouse and building brands of tomorrow for the modern Indian and global consumer. Our investments in AI, talent, and digital ecosystems will help us operate with greater precision and speed,' he said.
Answering shareholders' questions on Starbucks, Balaji said the company was focused on market expansion at this point in time and, therefore, there were many store additions. 'Same store profitability is under control, and most of the losses that you see is because of the expansion that you're seeing in terms of stores that are being put in place,' he added.

Non-executive director P B Balaji presided over the meeting in his stead. Regulations permit another director to lead the meeting when the board chairman is unavailable. Chandrasekaran's absence was due to his focus on Air India matters following the crash of London-bound flight 171 in Ahmedabad last week, which resulted in over 270 fatalities. At the meeting, company secretary Delnaz Dara Harda said, "The chairman of the board, N Chandrasekaran, will not be able to attend the AGM due to some exigencies." Tata Consumer initiated the annual general meeting sequence among major Tata Group companies, with TCS scheduled for Thursday and Tata Motors for Friday. It remains to be seen whether Chandrasekaran, who is also the chairman of both these companies, will chair the AGMs. According to a lawyer, if the chairman is not present within 15 minutes after the time appointed for holding the meeting, or if he is unwilling to act as chairman of the meeting, the directors present can elect a chairman among themselves. Chandrasekaran has been in Gurugram-Delhi, engaging with Air India personnel, holding discussions with civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu and aviation secretary Samir Kumar Sinha; and addressing various airline-related matters. His office also sought time with DGCA chief Faiz Ahmed Kidwai. During the AGM, Balaji, who is also the CFO of Tata Motors, acknowledged the challenging period for the Tata group. Erratic weather hurting Indian companies in biggest consumer market

By Harshita Swaminathan and Satviki Sanjay Some of India's largest companies, already hit by a demand slump, are facing a new threat in wooing the country's 1.4 billion consumers: unpredictable weather. A cooler-than-usual summer this year — followed by the earliest onset of rain since 2009 — has hurt companies selling everything from talcum powder to air conditioners. Blue Star Ltd., one of the largest AC sellers in the country, had to cut production by as much as 25 per cent between April and June, as it saw fewer buyers. It also delayed imports of compressors, a key input, and extended credit to some dealerships saddled with unsold inventories. Rivals Havells Ltd. and Tata-owned Voltas Ltd. also flagged a sales slowdown. A four-fold jump in frequency, unpredictability and intensity of extreme weather events in India over the past four decades has made planning and preparedness more demanding for companies. From Hindustan Unilever Ltd. to food delivery app Zomato-owner Eternal Ltd. to engineering giant Larsen & Tourbro Ltd., it's affecting everything from sales to labor and supply chain management in the world's biggest consumer market. India's situation as one of the most affected nations by climate change provides a glimpse of what's in store for other major economies as environmental change accelerates. As record-breaking temperatures, rains and other extreme weather occur worldwide, companies are likely to be left scrambling to predict and plan for the future. Earnings calls On earnings calls over the last six months, top management and equity analysts discussed 'delayed summer' and 'delayed winter' the most in five years, according to transcripts analyzed by Bloomberg News. 'This quarter is slightly challenging as far as the summer portfolio is concerned,' Mohan Goenka, vice chairman of Emami Ltd., whose products include talc powder, told investors on an earnings call last month. The company will try to make up for the setback through its other segments, he added. Varun Beverages Ltd., which bottles Pepsi in India, had said in April that it was ramping up production for the summer, expecting higher demand. Instead, unseasonal rains likely hurt performance at the beverage maker, according to analysts at Jefferies. The brokerage also flagged weaker demand at Dabur Ltd., which sells fruit juices, and Tata Consumer Products Ltd., which sells cold drinks. Time-sensitive summer demand, 'once missed, is difficult to recover,' analysts at Nuvama, led by Abneesh Roy, said in a note to clients. Labour shortage Rising incidence of heat waves, for example, was among factors causing a shortage of labor at Larsen, even as it split shifts between early morning and late afternoon. Eternal, which operates Zomato and Blinkit, said it faces a seasonal shortage of delivery workers in the summer. India experienced extreme weather events on 88 per cent of days in 2024 in one or more parts of the country, according to a database maintained by Centre for Science and Environment and Down To Earth. Between 1993 and 2022, the South Asian nation lost about $180 billion to severe heat and rains, the Climate Risk Index 2025 report said. Weather forecasting in India has been plagued by outdated technology and modeling systems that make it difficult to get accurate data. To bridge this gap, the country launched a new weather model last month to improve its forecasting by doubling the level of detail previously possible. Intended to improve farming and flood management, the model could also help companies as they seek better and more granular data. 'Businesses, while they were aware of the financial impact of weather, simply did not have enough reliable data that could be potentially put to use,' said Samuel John, co-founder and CEO of forecasting firm mistEO. Forecasting boom Things have changed in the half-decade since Covid, and weather forecasting has gone mainstream, John added. Outside of the farm sector, companies from industries such as consumption, quick commerce, logistics, and construction are increasingly approaching Skymet Weather Services Pvt., its chief executive officer Yogesh Patil said. These newer clients, who seek structured, calendar-linked forecasting dashboards, now make up about half of the Reliance Industries Ltd. unit's revenue. As companies navigate the new normal of erratic weather, planning and diversification are key. Blue Star's management is confident of recovering a large portion of the lost sales through the rest of the year, by working with more corporate clients where demand largely remains stable. But climate mitigation is becoming an important subject to Thiagarajan, who has worked in air conditioning for four decades. 'Predictability is dropping year after year,' he said. 'You can only be prepared for the worst.'
