Vancouver Canucks 2024-25 Report Card: Max Sasson

Yahoo3 days ago
Welcome to this edition of THN's Vancouver Canucks 2024-25 Report Card. This recurring 2025 off-season series features a deep dive into how each Canucks player performed last year. Today's article will focus on center Max Sasson, who finished the season with seven points in 29 games.
Sasson made the most of his opportunities when called up this year. The 24-year-old recorded an assist in each of his first two games with Vancouver and showed that he can be a strong depth option. Sasson also played a crucial role this season in the AHL as he helped the Abbotsford Canucks capture their first Calder Cup.
One of the reasons Sasson played 29 NHL games was his never-ending motor. Regardless of score or time left, he would give 100% and try to leave a positive mark on the game. Whether it was getting in on the forecheck or firing pucks on net whenever possible, Sasson's hard work eventually led to him becoming a fan favourite this season.
As for Sasson's best game during his time with Vancouver, that came on December 12 against the Florida Panthers. He was all over the scoresheet, recording two assists, two shots on goal, four blocks and winning both his faceoffs. In the end, Sasson was named third star as he helped the Canucks capture a 4-0 victory against the eventual Stanley Cup champions.

Vancouver Canucks 2024-25 Report Card: Elias Pettersson (D)
While Sasson had some success in the NHL, his biggest impact came while playing in the AHL. He recorded 32 points in 41 regular-season games before producing 14 points in 24 playoff games. Sasson was also the life of the party at the Calder Cup celebration as he was the last player to leave the stage once the ceremony had finished.
Looking ahead to next season, Sasson is projected to be one of a handful of players fighting for a spot in the bottom six. He did sign a one-year extension this off-season and brings not just position versatility, but also speed to the lineup. Even if Sasson is sent down at the beginning of the year, odds are that he will find his way back up to the NHL sooner rather than later.
The 2024-25 season was a special one for Sasson. He made his NHL debut, scored his first NHL goal and became a Calder Cup champion. Based on his performance, Sasson receives a B+ grade for the 2024-25 season.

Does Thomas Müller lift Vancouver to MLS title contention?

Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros of 'The Cooligans' discuss the 35-year-old German's discussion to sign with the Whitecaps and if he can help the team towards its first ever league title. Hear the full conversation on the 'The Cooligans' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Thomas Muller reportedly is set to join Vancouver Whitecaps. But we're looking at their season and saying, is this the player that puts them over the top? Does this make them title favorites? I don't foresee this being the move that immediately makes me think they're better than Miami. The Whitecaps are title contenders without Thomas Muller. I think they're Western Conference title contenders. I don't know if they're MLS Cup title contenders just yet, because to me you have to be like Philly. Philly is in first place in the East. I still really consider them title contenders, cause you haven't proven it to me when the when push comes to shove. You know, in MLS you need to be able to catch momentum towards the end of the season. It's smart to bring in signings now. I think that's smart, right? Get it out of the way, like learning, and once you really have cohesiveness, now starts, you know, MLS playoffs. But think about the stalwarts who are having a good season, Nashville having a pretty good season. FC Cincinnati's who are having a very good season, play teams like that that you know they can put it together defensively, you know they can play well in the playoffs. Are those the teams that, do you think all of a sudden Whitecaps now jump over those teams in your mind, come playoffs? The last few games, um, they've looked not in the form that they started the season in, but I don't think there's any real reason to worry. I think overall it'll be a net positive for them. And I agree, and then from the business side, because Vancouver, you know, there's murmurs of moving the team, they were up for sale supposedly last year. Here we go. They have to go up against motocross and then their playoff games get moved and all this other stuff. They gotta get their own stadium. Just signing a player of this caliber and cachet, I think just does something for the sporting side of the team and, and then kind of just helps with whatever is, you know, Don Garber was talking about efforting getting a new stadium. Because they're playing at BC Place, it has become an issue, and there aren't enough available dates, and they get bumped, and all this other stuff. So I think Vancouver Whitecaps have a lot to be happy about. And this is also the first time we've spoken about the Vancouver Whitecaps for 20 minutes, and probably like in all the, the one thing I will say, though, is I think his career in Europe was mostly over. He would have been riding the bench anyway, at least for a contender in the Champions League. So this is smart. Close

Shelton ends Mannarino jinx in Toronto

Ben Shelton earned his first career win over gritty Frenchman Adrian Mannarino on Wednesday, posting a 6-2, 6-3 victory to earn a third-round spot at the ATP Toronto Masters. The American fourth seed came to the court with a pair of losses against 37-year-old qualifier Mannarino, but said he was able to vary his serve to get over the line for a welcome first victory in the series. "This win was huge for me. He's a shotmaker, he can take the racquet out of your hands," Shelton said after his 56-minute win. "I've played well against him in the past and come up short, he can make things really difficult." Shelton broke twice to lift the opening set and cruised to a 5-3 margin in the second. He had to get past a niggle, double-faulting in the final game but saving the ensuing break point and finally clinching the win with a 16th ace followed by a service winner on match point. "His hands are so good," Shelton said of Mannarino. "You have to hit your (serving) spots really well. I'm happy I served well - I have nothing to complain about. "He's one of the great returners so I had to vary my serves. I'm happy with how I played." Andrey Rublev, runner-up in Canada a year ago to Alexei Popyrin, won his 250th career match on hardcourt as he beat France's Hugo Gaston 6-2, 6-3. The sixth seed needed four match points to advance after 86 minutes. He now plays Italian Lorenzo Sonego, a 6-1, 6-4 winner over China's Bu Yunchaokete. Wimbledon quarter-finalist Flavio Cobolli of Italy delivered four aces in the final game of a rain-interrupted match to clinch a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Canadian Alexis Galarneau. But Canadian Gabriele Diallo came out on top against his Italian opponent, beating Matteo Gigante 6-3, 7-6 (7/5). str/bb
