Algeria was shaken by grief late Friday after a deadly bus accident in the capital claimed 18 lives and left 10 others injured, according to the country's Civil Defense Authority.
The tragedy occurred when a passenger bus veered off a bridge and crashed into the Harrach Riverbed in eastern Algiers. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, pulling survivors from the wreckage and transporting them to a nearby hospital, while the deceased were transferred to the city morgue.
Videos circulating on social media captured the chaotic early moments of the accident, showing citizens leaping into the river to rescue trapped passengers before emergency crews arrived. Witnesses described the scene as 'horrific,' with cries for help echoing as volunteers and firefighters battled to save lives.
A local resident told Algerian media that the bus was carrying around 35 passengers at the time of the crash, though authorities have not yet confirmed the final number.
The incident sparked an outpouring of sorrow and anger across Algeria. Social media platforms were flooded with messages of condolences for the victims' families, alongside mounting calls for a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.
Authorities have yet to issue an official explanation, but road safety remains a growing concern in Algeria, where aging infrastructure and traffic accidents claim hundreds of lives annually.
The Harrach tragedy stands as one of the deadliest transport accidents in the country this year, underscoring the urgent need for stricter safety measures and oversight on public transport.
Meantime, Lieutenant General, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense, Chief of Staff of the National People's Army inspected the injured in the bus accident in Oued El Harrach.

Egyptian, Algerian FMs assert their rejection of Israeli cabinet's decision to expand aggression on Gaza

CAIRO, Aug 16 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptians Abroad Badr Abdelatty and Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad Ahmed Attaf asserted their firm rejection of the Israeli cabinet's decision to expand its military aggression on Gaza. They condemned the move as a dangerous escalation aimed at entrenching the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and continuing the systematic genocide against the unarmed Palestinian people, a blatant violation of international law and humanitarian law and a direct attack on the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state. This came during a phone call on Saturday between the two ministers as part of the ongoing coordination and consultation between the two brotherly nations. Abdelatty offered condolences to the Algerian government and people following the tragic bus accident in Algiers, which resulted in several fatalities and injuries. He wished the injured a speedy recovery and emphasized Egypt's full solidarity with Algeria in this difficult time. The call touched on bilateral cooperation, with both ministers expressing satisfaction over the growing momentum in Egyptian-Algerian relations in recent months. They agreed to continue working together to deepen cooperation across various fields and to leverage the current momentum to strengthen political, economic and development partnerships, in line with the aspirations of both peoples for stability and prosperity. On the situation in Gaza, Abdelatty briefed his Algerian counterpart on Egypt's ongoing efforts to broker a comprehensive ceasefire agreement, facilitate the release of hostages and detainees, and ensure the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave. Both sides underscored the urgent need for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, swift and unconditional delivery of humanitarian and medical assistance and an end to Israel's systematic policies of starvation and indiscriminate killing, which only serve to fuel extremism and violence. The two ministers reiterated their unequivocal rejection of Israel's illegal settlement policies and expansion in occupied Palestinian territories, denouncing them as serious violations of international law and a major obstacle to achieving a comprehensive and just peace. The call also addressed regional developments, particularly in Libya, where Abdelatty stressed the importance of preserving Libya's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. He reaffirmed Egypt's support for the UN-led peace process and the need for a Libyan-led political solution, including the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries, and the dismantling of militias.
